F1 Team Form: Miami Grand Prix

Ferrari locked-out the front row at the inaugural Miami Grand Prix but Red Bull have taken both victories to date at Hard Rock Stadium. Here’s everything you need to know about each team’s history at the Miami Grand Prix!

RED BULL

WINS: 2, POLES: 1, PODIUMS: 3 | 2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX RESULT: VERSTAPPEN 1st, PEREZ 2nd

Despite not starting from the front row in either 2022 or 2023, Max Verstappen has won both runnings of the Miami Grand Prix so far. From third on the grid in 2022 and ninth in 2023, Verstappen has not let early weekend issues – like steering problems seeing him sit out most of the running in Free Practice 2 in 2022 or headrest issues in practice in 2023 – prevent him from bringing home the victory.

Sergio Perez made Red Bull the first team to record a 1-2 finish at the Miami Grand Prix in 2023, finishing as runner-up to his team-mate. He finished fourth in the inaugural race – which is the lowest finishing position for a Red Bull driver to date at the track.

Perez also gave the team their first pole position at the circuit in 2023. Both cars lined up on the second row in 2022, while Verstappen qualified only ninth last year.

MERCEDES

WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX RESULT: RUSSELL 4th, HAMILTON 6th

George Russell missed out on reaching Q3 at the 2022 Miami Grand Prix by just 0.045s in a tight battle to make it into the top ten shootout, while Lewis Hamilton missed out on a spot in Q3 in 2023 by two tenths. While one driver has been eliminated in Q2 in each Miami Grand Prix to date, the other has qualified sixth.

Mercedes are yet to finish on the podium at the Miami Grand Prix. Russell overtook Hamilton in the closing stages in 2022 with the duo finishing fifth and sixth. Russell again finished ahead of Hamilton in 2023, recording the team’s best result to date at the track with fourth place. Hamilton finished sixth for a second consecutive year.

FERRARI

WINS: 0, POLES: 1, PODIUMS: 2 | 2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX RESULT: SAINZ 5th, LECLERC 7th

Ferrari locked out the front row at the 2022 Miami Grand Prix, with Charles Leclerc taking pole position after topping the timesheet in all three qualifying sessions. Carlos Sainz had crashed out on Friday afternoon in Free Practice 2, but recovered well to set the second fastest time.

Despite their front row lock-out, Ferrari failed to win the inaugural Miami Grand Prix. Leclerc finished as runner-up to Max Verstappen, while Sainz stood on the final step of the podium.

Ferrari had a trickier time in 2023. Leclerc crashed out in Free Practice 2 and crashed out again in the final minutes of qualifying, leaving the Scuderia only third and seventh on the grid. Sainz was the team’s top finisher in 2023, coming home in third place despite a 5-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Leclerc finished seventh.

McLAREN

WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX RESULT: NORRIS 17th, PIASTRI 19th

McLaren are yet to score a point at the Miami Grand Prix. In 2022, Daniel Ricciardo originally crossed the line 11th but was demoted to 13th having picked up a time penalty. That remains the team’s best result at the venue.

Lando Norris crashed out following contact with Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri in 2022, while he and team-mate Oscar Piastri could manage no better than 17th and 19th in 2023.

Norris had reached Q3 on Saturday at the 2022 Miami Grand Prix, qualifying in eighth place. That’s McLaren’s only top ten qualification so far in Miami. Ricciardo was out in Q2 in 2022, qualifying 14th, while neither Norris nor Piastri progressed past Q1 in 2023. It marked the team’s first double Q1 exit since the 2018 Brazilian Grand Prix.

ASTON MARTIN

WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 1 | 2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX RESULT: ALONSO 3rd, STROLL 12th

Disaster struck Aston Martin ahead of the 2022 Miami Grand Prix. Due to a fuel issue, both cars were required to start the inaugural race at Miami International Autodrome from the pit lane. Lance Stroll had originally qualified in the top ten for the race, while Sebastian Vettel was due to line up 13th on the grid.

Despite starting from the pit lane, Sebastian Vettel challenged for points and was involved in a late race scrap with Mick Schumacher. It resulted in contact, which saw Vettel retire from the race. The duo’s collision and penalties for other drivers promoted Lance Stroll into the final points-paying position.

One year later and Aston Martin finished on the podium at the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, with Fernando Alonso driving from a front row start to third place at the chequered flag. It was less impressive weekend for Stroll, who was out in Q1 and finished the race 12th.

ALPINE

WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX RESULT: GASLY 8th, OCON 9th

Esteban Ocon was unable to compete in qualifying at the 2022 Miami Grand Prix after a heavy crash in Free Practice 3. On the other side of the Alpine garage, Fernando Alonso did not reach Q3, missing out by mere hundredths of a second and qualifying 11th. One year later, both Ocon and new team-mate Pierre Gasly reached Q3, with Gasly qualifying fifth – Alpine’s best Saturday result here so far.

Despite his Saturday misfortunes in 2022, Ocon scored Alpine’s only points at the Miami Grand Prix in 2022 with an eighth place finish. Team-mate Fernando Alonso was classified three places behind despite having finished ahead on track. Originally crossing the line eighth, Alonso was handed two five-second time penalties: one for causing a collision, the other for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

In 2023, both Alpine drivers scored in the race. Gasly finished ahead of Ocon with the French duo coming home eighth and ninth.

WILLIAMS

WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX RESULT: ALBON 14th, SARGEANT 20th

A technical issue in Free Practice 2 certainly didn’t help Nicholas Latifi’s Miami Grand Prix in 2022. The Canadian lined up on the back row of the grid – but his team-mate Alex Albon was unable to do much better, qualifying only 18th.

Both drivers made progress in Sunday’s race. Latifi was able to move forward to 14th, while Albon made up an impressive eight positions and finished the race in ninth place, scoring rare points for Williams in 2022.

Williams failed to score in 2023, with Albon recording the team’s best result in 14th place. No drivers retired from the race, with Logan Sargeant finishing 20th and a lap down on his home race debut.

Albon became the first Williams driver to progress to Q2 at the Miami Grand Prix in 2023, qualifying 11th, while Sargeant became the team’s first driver to qualify last for the event.

WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX RESULT: TSUNODA 11th, DE VRIES 18th

Both Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda reached Q3 with AlphaTauri at the 2022 Miami Grand Prix, with the pair qualifying in seventh and ninth respectively. Neither driver scored points in the race however.

After a wide moment, Gasly re-joined the track and collided with Lando Norris’ McLaren on Lap 46, eliminating both drivers. Meanwhile, Tsunoda lost three positions over the course of the race and could finish no higher than 12th.

In 2023, Nyck de Vries out-qualified Tsunoda but it was only 15th on the grid for the Dutch driver. Tsunoda started 17th. The more experienced of AlphaTauri duo gained six spots to finish 11th, while de Vries fell back down the order and came home 18th.

SAUBER

WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX RESULT: BOTTAS 13th, ZHOU 16th

Valtteri Bottas showed impressive pace at the 2022 Miami Grand Prix, qualifying in fifth place. Zhou Guanyu could not replicate his team-mate’s efforts and was eliminated in Q1, qualifying a lowly 17th.

Come race day in 2022, Zhou completed only six laps of the race before a water leak forced him out of proceedings. Bottas lost positions to the two Mercedes drivers in the race but scored points, finishing in seventh place.

In 2023, Bottas gave Alfa Romeo another Q3 appearance at the Miami Grand Prix, this time qualifying tenth. Zhou was out in Q2, setting the 14th fastest time. The team left the track point-less in 2023. Both drivers lost positions from where they started, with Bottas 13th and Zhou 16th.

HAAS

WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX RESULT: MAGNUSSEN 10th, HULKENBERG 15th

Mick Schumacher was running within the points in the closing stages of the 2022 Miami Grand Prix but late race contract with friend Sebastian Vettel saw him drop out of the points and finish only 15th. It was a fruitless weekend for Haas, with Kevin Magnussen retiring from the race in the final laps following a collision with Lance Stroll – for which the Dane picked up a penalty.

In qualifying, Mick Schumacher progressed to Q2 and qualified 15th while Kevin Magnussen narrowly missed out on a spot in the second stage of qualifying and was eliminated in Q1.

Haas picked up their first Miami Grand Prix point in 2023 courtesy of Kevin Magnussen. After qualifying a brilliant fourth, Magnussen finished tenth. Nico Hulkenberg’s preparation for his first appearance at the Miami venue was hampered by a crash in Free Practice 1. He qualified 12th and finished 15th.
