What is F1 Driver Of The Day?
Driver Of The Day was introduced at the start of the 2016 season. Since the 2016 Australian Grand Prix, Formula 1 has invited fans to vote during the Grand Prix for the driver who has impressed them the most in the race.
Fans can vote via the official Formula 1 website. The result of the F1 Driver Of The Day vote is announced just after the end of each Grand Prix.
Who has won F1 Driver Of The Day the most times?
45 wins – Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen currently holds the record for the most F1 Driver Of The Day wins, having received the most votes at 45 races. Verstappen received the award for the first time at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, the race at which he become the youngest winner in Formula 1 history on his Red Bull debut.
Verstappen went on to claim the award at a total of eight races in 2016, which remains the record for the most times that a driver has been voted F1 Driver Of The Day in a single season. Verstappen has topped the list of most Driver Of The Day wins in four seasons since then – in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022.
2023 saw him add another three Driver Of The Day wins to his tally – at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where he drove from 15th on the grid to a runner-up finish; the Miami Grand Prix, which he won from ninth on the grid; and the Belgian Grand Prix, which he won from sixth.
Verstappen currently sits 21 wins clear of any other driver at the top of the list of most Driver Of The Day wins. He was the first driver to win the accolade at three consecutive races – at the 2016 Malaysian, Japanese and United States Grands Prix. He has since repeated the feat on a further two occasions.
23 wins – Sebastian Vettel
Sebastian Vettel currently sits second on the list of most F1 Driver Of The Day wins, having taken the award at 23 races. Vettel first won the award at the 2016 Singapore Grand Prix. It was the first of three races at which he took the accolade in 2016.
2017 was Vettel’s most fruitful year in terms of Driver Of The Day wins, taking the honours at seven races over the course of the season and becoming the second driver to win the vote at three races in a row at the Spanish, Monaco and Canadian Grands Prix.
Vettel continued to pick up Driver Of The Day wins in the latter years of his career, winning at least twice in every year until his retirement. He was voted Driver Of The Day for the 23rd and final time on his last F1 appearance at the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
19 wins – Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton is fourth on the list of most F1 Driver Of The Day wins, having taken the honours at 19 races. Hamilton did not win the award for the first time until the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix, a race in which he drove from 21st on the grid to a podium finish. He would not win the award again until the Belgian Grand Prix one year later.
Hamilton has never won the vote more than three times in a year, doing so in 2017, 2018 and 2022. His fifth title winning year, in 2019, is the only season so far in which Hamilton has not won the Driver Of The Day vote at any race. The 2023 Spanish Grand Prix was the only time that he would win the award in the 2023 season, while his victory at the 2024 British Grand Prix was the only time he won it in 2024.
Hamilton won the Driver Of The Day for the first time as a Ferrari driver at the 2025 Bahrain Grand Prix.
19 wins – Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc picked up points for the first time in his Formula 1 career at the 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. That would also be the first time that the Monegasque driver won the Driver Of The Day vote.
Leclerc went on to win the vote four times during his first season with Ferrari in 2019, including at Monza; the scene of his second Formula 1 victory. He failed to win the vote at any race in 2020, but picked up the honours at the Styrian and British Grands Prix in 2021.
Leclerc had an impressive start to the 2022 season, with the Driver Of The Day votes reflecting his performances. Leclerc was awarded the win at all of the first three races of the season, equalling the record for most consecutive Driver Of The Day victories.
Leclerc picked up the accolade twice in 2023: at the Canadian Grand Prix and the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the latter in which he passed Sergio Perez for a runner-up finish on the final lap.
He was voted Driver Of The Day for the first time in 2024 at the fourth round of the season, the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix and won four more times with his Monaco, Monza and Austin victories and his drive from 19th to the third at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Leclerc took his first Driver Of The Day win in 2025 for his drive to second place at the Monaco Grand Prix.
18 wins – Lando Norris
Lando Norris was voted Driver Of The Day at five races in 2023. It doubled his total number of wins, having won the award five times in his career prior to 2023. Norris first received the accolade at the 2019 French Grand Prix and would go on to win once more in his rookie season, at the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix.
He did not win the Driver Of The Day vote again until the 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, at which he finished on the podium. A further podium finish in the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix saw him pick up the honours again, while the 2021 Russian Grand Prix – which Norris led the majority of, until rainfall saw him drop to seventh in the closing laps – became his fifth Driver Of The Day victory.
McLaren’s mid-season pace turnaround in 2023 and Norris’ ability to bring home podium finishes saw him win the vote five times in the space of 12 races between the Austrian and Sao Paulo Grands Prix. Norris equalled the record for most consecutive F1 Driver Of The Day wins, taking the accolade at all three of the United States, Mexico City and Sao Paulo Grands Prix.
14 wins – Sergio Perez
Sergio Perez was voted Driver Of The Day for the first time at the 2016 Monaco Grand Prix, in which he took a podium finish, and then won the award again just two races later at the 2016 European Grand Prix – the first F1 race which was held at Baku City Circuit.
Strangely, despite numerous impressive performances, Perez would not be voted Driver Of The Day again until four years later, at the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix. After another win at that year’s Portuguese Grand Prix, Perez would claim four Driver Of The Day victories in 2021 – the most of any driver that season. He’s won the award three times in each of the two seasons since and now sits tied on 14 overall Driver Of The Day wins with Lewis Hamilton.
11 wins – Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo has won the Driver Of The Day award 11 times, with his most recent win coming at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix – two years after his last, at the 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix. 2023 was only the second year since its introduction in which Ricciardo did not win the vote at any race. He also failed to be voted Driver Of The Day at any Grand Prix in 2019.
Monza is the only circuit at which Ricciardo has won the accolade twice. He did so in 2017, where he finished fourth having started only 16th, and in 2021, where he took McLaren’s first Formula 1 victory in almost a decade.
