2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix: Qualifying Statistics

Piastri takes his third pole of the year, Ferrari fail to qualify in the top ten at Imola for the first time in the track’s history and Tsunoda crashes out to record Red Bull’s first Q1 exit at Imola since 2006. Here are the facts and statistics from qualifying at the 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix!

PIASTRI ON POLE AT THE 2025 EMILIA ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri recorded the third pole position of his career at the 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It was also his third pole of the year. He is the 68th driver to have recorded as many as three poles in Formula 1.

Piastri is now tied with Max Verstappen as the driver with the most poles in the 2025 season.

McLaren became the first team to record as many as ten pole positions at Imola. It was the 14th time that a team has recorded as many as 10 poles at a circuit – and the sixth time that McLaren have done so.

This was McLaren’s first pole position at Imola since Kimi Raikkonen started from the front of the grid at the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix.

Piastri secured pole position by 0.034 seconds – the smallest pole-winning margin at Imola since 2003. It is the sixth time in the seven races so far this year that pole has been decided by under a tenth of a second.

IN THE TOP TEN

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris became the first drivers to record as many as five Q3 appearances at Imola.

Qualifying second for the 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Max Verstappen remains yet to qualify outside of the top three on any of his five appearances at Imola.

With third place, George Russell recorded Mercedes’ best qualifying result at Imola since their last pole here in 2021. This was Russell’s first top five qualifying result at the track.

Russell maintained his record of qualifying in the top five at every race so far this season. He has qualified in the top seven at every race since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix.

Both Aston Martin drivers made it through to Q3. These were the team’s first Q3 appearances of the season, as well as the team’s first double Q3 appearance since the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

This was the Silverstone team’s first double top eight qualifying result at Imola since both Jordan drivers qualified in the top eight at the 2000 San Marino Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso’s fifth place marked his best qualifying result since qualifying third for the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix. It was his best qualifying result at Imola since qualifying fifth for the 2006 San Marino Grand Prix.

Lance Stroll made it out of Q1 for the first time since the Chinese Grand Prix, ending a streak of four consecutive Q1 exits. He qualified in the top eight for the first time since the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix.

This was Stroll’s second Q3 appearance at Imola, having qualified tenth in 2021.

Williams continued their record of reaching Q3 with at least one car in every race so far this season. This was the team’s third double Q3 appearance of the season. It is the first time they have reached Q3 with both cars at consecutive races since the 2016 United States and Mexican Grands Prix.

Carlos Sainz qualified sixth for the third race weekend in a row, while Alex Albon qualified seventh for the second race in a row.

Albon reached Q3 at Imola for the first time since driving for Red Bull in 2020.

This was the first-ever double Q3 appearance at Imola for both Aston Martin and Williams.

This was the first time both Williams drivers qualified in the top seven at Imola since the 2004 San Marino Grand Prix.

Isack Hadjar recorded the third Q3 appearance of his career at the 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, qualifying ninth.

Pierre Gasly qualified tenth, reaching Q3 for the third time in the last four races.

ELIMINATED IN Q2

For the first time since the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, neither Ferrari driver reached Q3 at the 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

This was the first Imola race in history for which neither Ferrari driver qualified in the top ten positions.

This was only the second time in the last 85 races that neither Ferrari driver appeared in the top ten shootout.

Charles Leclerc was one of two drivers, along with Nico Hulkenberg, to lose their 100% Q3 appearance rate at Imola in qualifying for the 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton qualified 12th for the second consecutive Grand Prix.

Kimi Antonelli was eliminated in Q2 for the first time in his career, failing to reach Q3 for the first time since his Q1 exit on debut in Australia.

Franco Colapinto crashed out towards the end of Q1, meaning he was unable to take part in Q2.

Gabriel Bortoleto reached Q2 for a second consecutive race weekend for the first time in his career.

OUT IN Q1

Yuki Tsunoda suffered a heavy crash in Q1, doing so before he was able to complete a timed lap. He therefore recorded Red Bull’s first Q1 exit at Imola since the 2006 San Marino Grand Prix.

Tsunoda became the first driver to record as many as three Q1 exits at Imola. He was also out in Q1 in 2021 and 2022.

Nico Hulkenberg was eliminated in Q1 for the third race in a row. It’s the first time he’s recorded three consecutive Q1 exits in a single season and the first time he’s been out in Q1 on three consecutive appearances since his substitute appearances at the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix and the 2022 Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix.

Esteban Ocon has been eliminated in Q1 at every other race so far this season. This was Ocon’s second Q1 exit at Imola – his first since 2022.

Both Ocon and Ollie Bearman were eliminated in Q1 at the 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. This was Haas’ third double Q1 exit at Imola, after 2020 and 2021. With Ocon 18th and Bearman 19th, the team equalled their worst qualifying result at the track, having also qualified 18th and 19th in 2021.

This was Haas’ second double Q1 exit of the season – their first since the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
