
Norris leads McLaren’s first front row lock-out at Spa since 2005, Tsunoda records his best qualifying result so far as a Red Bull driver and Hamilton records a rare Q1 exit. Here are the facts and statistics from qualifying at the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix!
NORRIS ON POLE AT THE 2025 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX
Lando Norris secured pole position for the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, taking the 13th pole position of his career. Norris is the 34th driver to have taken as many as 13 pole positions during his career.
This was Norris’ fourth pole of the season. Norris, Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen are all now tied for the most poles in 2025, each with four.
Norris secured McLaren’s first pole position at Spa since Jenson Button took pole with the team at the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix.
This was Norris’ first top four qualification at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Norris secured pole position for the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix by 0.088 seconds – the smallest pole margin at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps since 2010, when Mark Webber took pole by 0.085 seconds.
IN THE TOP TEN
With Oscar Piastri qualifying second to his team-mate, McLaren locked out the front row at the Belgian Grand Prix for the first time since 2005. It was McLaren’s seventh front row lock-out at Spa in total.
Qualifying fourth, Max Verstappen failed to set the fastest time in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix for the first time since 2020. Despite that, fourth will be his best starting position at Spa since 2021 – which, due to grid penalties, remains his only pole position at the track.
Alex Albon qualified fifth for the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, recording his best qualifying result since qualifying fourth for the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix.
Albon equalled his best Belgian Grand Prix qualifying result, having qualified fifth here with Red Bull in 2020.
For the first time since 2021, George Russell out-qualified his team-mate at the Belgian Grand Prix. This was his best qualifying result at Spa since qualifying on the front row with Williams at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.
Yuki Tsunoda reached Q3 for the first time since the Miami Grand Prix. This was the first time Tsunoda reached Q3 at the Belgian Grand Prix in his career.
With seventh place, Tsunoda recorded his best qualifying result since qualifying fifth for the Australian Grand Prix.
Oscar Piastri maintained his 100% Q3 appearance rate at the Belgian Grand Prix, He was joined in the group by Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson and Gabriel Bortoleto.
With both Racing Bulls drivers reaching Q3, this was the first time since 2008 that both of the Red Bull junior team’s drivers reached Q3 at the Belgian Grand Prix. This was the third race of the year at which both of the team’s drivers have reached Q3, after the Chinese and Monaco Grands Prix.
Liam Lawson reached Q3 for the third time in the last six races.
Gabriel Bortoleto qualified tenth, reaching Q3 for the second time in his career. Bortoleto recorded the Sauber team’s first Q3 appearance at the Belgian Grand Prix since 2019. It is only the team’s second Q3 appearance at Spa in the last 14 seasons.
ELIMINATED IN Q2
Both Haas drivers were eliminated in Q2 at the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, with Esteban Ocon qualifying 11th and Ollie Bearman 12th. This was the first season since 2019 in which neither Haas driver was eliminated in Q1 at Spa.
With 11th place, this was Ocon’s best qualifying result since reaching Q3 at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Qualifying 13th, Pierre Gasly extended his record for the most Q2 exits at the Belgian Grand Prix. This was his sixth Q2 exit at Spa – and his fourth consecutive elimination at the circuit.
This was the first time since 2021 that Gasly did not qualify 12th for the Belgian Grand Prix.
With both Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto progressing to Q2, the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix is the first race since the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix at which both Sauber drivers made it out of Q1.
OUT IN Q1
After his fastest lap time was deleted for a track limits violation in qualifying for the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton was eliminated in Q1. It was Hamilton’s first Q1 exit since the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – as well as the first Q1 exit for a Ferrari driver since the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This was Hamilton’s second Q1 exit at the Belgian Grand Prix, his last being in 2016.
This was the first time a Ferrari driver exited in Q1 at the Belgian Grand Prix since Luca Badoer qualified 20th in 2009.
Aston Martin recorded their second double Q1 exit of the season – their first since the Miami Grand Prix. This was the Silverstone-based team’s first double Q1 exit at Spa since they were under their Force India guise in 2008.
Fernando Alonso became the first driver to record as many as four Q1 exits at the Belgian Grand Prix, having also been out here in Q1 in 2015, 2016 and 2018.
This was Alonso’s first back row qualification since the 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Lance Stroll exited in Q1 for the fourth consecutive race weekend. It was his ninth Q1 exit in the last 11 Grand Prix weekends.
This was Stroll’s first Q1 exit at Spa-Francorchamps since 2018.
Kimi Antonelli qualified 18th for the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, recording his second Q1 exit of the year – his first since his debut at the Australian Grand Prix.
This was Mercedes’ fourth Q1 exit at the Belgian Grand Prix – the team’s first since Lewis Hamilton exited in Q1 in 2016.
Franco Colapinto set the 17th fastest time in qualifying for the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, marking his fourth Q1 exit in the last six races.
