RACE BY RACE: ZHOU GUANYU‘S 2023 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2023 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu finished only 16th but recorded the fastest lap of the race. It was the second time in his career that Zhou has set the fastest lap. He has not benefited on either occasion points-wise, having also finished 16th when he last set the fastest lap at the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix.

2023 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

Despite qualifying one position better than where he did in 2022, Zhou Guanyu finished the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 13th place – two positions down on where he finished last year.

2023 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu finished in ninth place at the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, recording his first points finish since the 2022 Italian Grand Prix. Zhou gained eight positions from where he started in the in the race – the most positions he’s gained in his career to date.

2023 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu was eliminated in Q1 for a second consecutive race. This was the first time that Zhou recorded Q1 exits at successive races since the 2022 Austrian and French Grands Prix. In the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Zhou recorded his first retirement since the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix.

This was his second consecutive retirement at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, meaning he is yet to reach the chequered flag at Baku City Circuit. Daniil Kvyat is the only other driver to have made multiple appearances in Azerbaijan without ever crossing the finish line.

2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu is one of three drivers to have competed in both the 2022 and 2023 Miami Grands Prix without scoring a point. The other drivers to have done so are Yuki Tsunoda and Lando Norris.

2023 MONACO GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu qualified 19th for the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, maintaining his 100% Q1 exit record in the principality. He qualified one position better than where he qualified in 2022 but remains yet to qualify better than on the back row of the grid.

2023 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

Finishing ninth, Zhou Guanyu equalled his best result of the 2023 season so far and picked up points for the fifth time in his career.

2023 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu qualified last for the third time in his career at the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, having previously done so at the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix. Zhou became the first driver for the former Sauber team to qualify in last place at the Canadian Grand Prix since Pascal Wehrlein did so in 2017.

2023 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu was eliminated in Q1 for the second race in a row at the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix. It marked the second time this year that Zhou was eliminated in Q1 at two successive events. With Zhou 12th and Valtteri Bottas 15th, this was the fifth consecutive race at the Red Bull Ring in which neither Alfa Romeo driver scored a point.

2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu was eliminated in Q1 for a third consecutive race. This was the first time in his career that Zhou was eliminated in Q1 at three races in a row. Zhou finished the race in 15th place, making it past the first lap at Silverstone for the first time in his career.

2023 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu recorded the best qualifying result of his career to date with fifth place at the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. He had never previously qualified in the top eight. This was Zhou’s third Q3 appearance in total and his first since the 2022 British Grand Prix.

After making a poor start from fifth on the grid, Zhou could finish the race no higher than 16th. He lost 11 positions over the course of the race – the most places he’s lost in a single race which he has completed in his career to date.

2023 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu overtook Gianni Morbidelli as the driver to have made the second most starts in car number 24 at the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix. Only Timo Glock has now made more starts in car 24, with 58

2023 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu crashed out of the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix in the wet conditions. It was his second retirement of the season, having also retired at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

2023 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu qualified 16th for the second successive race, missing out on a Q2 appearance by another small margin. His best Q1 lap was just 0.047s slower than the cut-off time. At the Dutch Grand Prix, Zhou missed out on Q2 by just 0.031s.

2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

Having started from the pit lane, Zhou Guanyu finished 12th at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. Failing to score for an eighth consecutive race, Zhou equalled the longest point-less streak of his Formula 1 career.

2023 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

With Zhou Guanyu being the top Alfa Romeo finisher in 13th, the former Sauber team’s point-less streak at Suzuka – which dates back to 2014 – continued.

2023 QATAR GRAND PRIX

For the fourth time in his career, Zhou Guanyu qualified in last place at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix. This was the second race of the season at which Zhou qualified last, after the Canadian Grand Prix. This was Zhou’s third consecutive back row qualification.

Zhou gained ten positions from where he started over the course of the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix to finish ninth. It’s the most positions he’s gained in a Formula 1 race. Ninth equalled his best result of the season, having previously finished ninth in Australia and Spain.

2023 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu qualified 12th for the 2023 United States Grand Prix, recording his best qualifying result since reaching Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Zhou out-qualified Bottas at Alfa Romeo for the first time since the Dutch Grand Prix.

2023 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu made his second Q3 appearance of the 2023 season, having last qualified in the top ten at the Hungarian Grand Prix. With team-mate Valtteri Bottas 14th and Zhou 15th in the race, Alfa Romeo failed to score points at the Mexico City Grand Prix for the first time since 2019.

2023 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu qualified on the back row of the grid for the fourth time in six races. The 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix marked the fifth time that Zhou has qualified 20th in his Formula 1 career. Zhou recorded his third DNF of the year; his first since the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix

2023 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

For the first time since the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu finished ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas at the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

2023 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

Zhou Guanyu qualified 19th for the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, recording his seventh back row qualification of the season. He finished 17th and – like his team-mate – recorded the lowest finishing result in any race which he has completed.
