RACE BY RACE: PIERRE GASLY‘S 2023 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2023 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

It was a far from ideal start to Pierre Gasly’s Alpine career on Saturday when his best lap time – which was good enough only for 17th – was deleted, meaning he qualified 20th and last. It was his first back row qualification since the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix.

However, having started last on the grid, Gasly gained 11 positions over the course of the race to finish in ninth place. It’s the most positions that the Frenchman has ever gained in a Grand Prix. This was the first time Gasly picked up points since the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix and the first time he scored points in Bahrain since the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix.

Scoring from 20th, Gasly is the first driver to ever score having started 20th on the grid at Bahrain International Circuit. His ninth place also equalled the best result from the grid slot in Bahrain’s history. Rubens Barrichello finished ninth having started 20th in the 2005 Bahrain Grand Prix, before the finishing position provided any points.

2023 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly made his 110th Grand Prix start at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, seeing him move into the top ten of French drivers who’ve made the most F1 starts, overtaking Philippe Alliot.

Gasly maintained his 100% Q3 appearance rate at Jeddah Corniche Circuit but was out-qualified by a team-mate for the first time at the track. Gasly reached the final part of qualifying for the first time since the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix.

Finishing ninth for a second consecutive race, Gasly recorded his worst Saudi Arabian Grand Prix result to date.

2023 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly reached Q3 at the Australian Grand Prix for the first time in his career but had a Sunday to forget after crashing into his team-mate. His retirement ended a 14-race finishing streak for the French driver.

2023 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly crashed out in Q1 at the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, recording his first Q1 exit at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix since 2018. He finished the race in 14th place, failing to score in Baku for the first time since 2019.

2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly qualified in fifth place for the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, recording his first top five qualifying result since the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix. The Frenchman finished eighth in the race, picking up points in the United States for the first time in his Formula 1 career. Gasly’s previous best result in America was 12th place with Toro Rosso in the 2018 United States Grand Prix.

2023 MONACO GRAND PRIX

With seventh place at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly recorded his best result with Alpine to date. This was the Frenchman’s best result since finishing fifth at the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This was the fourth consecutive Monaco Grand Prix in which the driver who started seventh finished seventh.

2023 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly qualified in fourth place for the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix, equalling the best qualifying result of his career. This was Gasly’s best Spanish Grand Prix qualifying result to date. His previous best Saturday result at the track was sixth place, with Red Bull in 2019. Gasly dropped six positions on the grid, however, after picking up two separate three-place grid penalties for impeding other drivers.

2023 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

After encountering traffic at the end of Q1 – on a lap which Alpine estimated would have put him sixth – Pierre Gasly was out in the first stage of qualifying at the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix. From his four visits to the Canadian Grand Prix, this was the third time that Gasly was eliminated in Q1. 17th is Gasly’s worst qualifying attempt at the venue to date.

2023 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly’s tenth place finish in the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix made this the sixth consecutive race at the Red Bull Ring in which the Enstone-based team has scored points.

2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly recorded his second non-finish of the year. Like team-mate Esteban Ocon, who also retired, this was the second consecutive season in which he retired from the British Grand Prix. With both Ocon and Gasly retiring, Alpine recorded their second double retirement of the 2023 season. This was the Enstone team’s first double DNF at Silverstone since 2016.

2023 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Alpine’s 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix came to a disappointing end in the early stages of the race. Following contact, both Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon retired in the opening laps. This was the second consecutive double DNF for the Enstone-based team; the first time the team has failed to finish with either car at two races in a row since they were in their Benetton guise, at the 1999 Italian and European Grands Prix. It was also the first time since 2006 that both of the Enstone team’s drivers have retired from the Hungarian Grand Prix.

2023 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly recorded his fourth Q2 exit at Spa in qualifying for the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, equalling the record for most Q2 exits at the circuit. Adrian Sutil, Nico Hulkenberg and Romain Grosjean have also recorded four Q2 exits here. The 2023 Belgian Grand Prix marked the third time in the last four years that Gasly has qualified 12th at Spa.

Gasly impressed in the Sprint, finishing in third place. It marked the first time he scored points in a Sprint event. He failed to score in the Grand Prix, finishing 11th. It marked the first time in his career that he finished outside of the points at the Belgian Grand Prix.

2023 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

After a post race time penalty for Sergio Perez at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly moved up to third in the final order. The Frenchman recorded his first podium finish as an Alpine driver and his first top three Sunday result since the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. It was the fourth podium finish of Gasly’s career and his first top six finish of the season.

Gasly equalled the best result for the driver starting 12th on the grid at the Dutch Grand Prix. Nigel Mansell also finished third having started 12th in 1984.

2023 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly recorded his first ever Monza Q1 exit on Saturday at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix. With Gasly 15th and team-mate Esteban Ocon failing to finish, 2023 is the second consecutive season in which Alpine failed to score at the Italian Grand Prix.

2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

For the first time in his four Singapore Grand Prix appearances, Pierre Gasly was out-qualified by his team-mate. Finishing the race in sixth place, Gasly finished in the top six for the second time in 2023. This is the second time in the last three races that he recorded a top six result. Sixth is Gasly’s best Singapore Grand Prix result to date.

2023 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly qualified in 12th place for the fourth time in the last five races. With both Esteban Ocon and Gasly scoring in the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix – in ninth and tenth respectively – this was only the second time in the last nine races that both Alpine drivers finished in the top ten.

2023 QATAR GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly reached Q3 for the first time since the 2023 British Grand Prix, ending the second-longest Q3-less streak of his career to date. Gasly finished 12th, failing to score for the first time since the Italian Grand Prix. He lost five positions over the course of the Qatar Grand Prix – the first time he finished in a worse position than where he started in a race where he’s reached the chequered flag since the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix.

2023 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly qualified seventh for a second consecutive race at the 2023 United States Grand Prix. Gasly maintained his record of out-qualifying his team-mate on every United States Grand Prix appearance. Gasly scored points in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix, making this the first time he had ever picked up points at Circuit of The Americas.

2023 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly finished the Mexico City Grand Prix in 11th place for the second consecutive season. This was the first time that the Frenchman finished where he started in Mexico.

2023 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly failed to reach Q3 at Interlagos for the first time since the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix. It was also the first time since then that he was out-qualified by a team-mate at the venue.

2023 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly qualified in fifth place at the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix, recording his first top five qualification since the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix. He lost positions over the course of the race and finished 11th for the third time this year.

2023 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

Pierre Gasly qualified tenth for the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It equalled his best qualifying result at Yas Marina Circuit, having also qualified tenth in 2020.
