RACE BY RACE: ESTEBAN OCON‘S 2023 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2023 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon was the third and final retirement from the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix. This was the first time in his career that Ocon failed to reach the chequered flag at the opening race of the year, as well as his first ever retirement at Bahrain International Circuit.

2023 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

Out-qualifying his team-mate for a third time from three Saudi Arabian Grand Prix appearances, Esteban Ocon maintained his 100% Q3 appearance rate in Jeddah. Ocon finished the race in eighth place, recording his worst finishing result at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix to date. He had never previously finished outside of the top six.

2023 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon made his 115th Grand Prix start at the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, overtaking Patrick Tambay as the French driver to have made the eighth most starts in Formula 1. Ocon was eliminated in Q2 for the third time in his four Albert Park appearances.

2023 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon was eliminated in Q2 for the third time at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, equalling Carlos Sainz, Kevin Magnussen and Daniel Ricciardo as the joint record-holder for most Q2 exits in Baku.

2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

Both Alpine drivers qualified in the top eight in a conventional qualifying session for the first time since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix and both of the team’s drivers scored in the race for the second time in 2023. Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon finished eighth and ninth respectively in the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, the reverse of how they finished in the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

2023 MONACO GRAND PRIX

After recording the second-best qualifying result of his career with fourth place, Esteban Ocon finished in third place at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix. This was the 25th podium finish in total for a French driver at the Monaco Grand Prix during its time on the Formula 1 calendar; the first since Olivier Panis in 1996.

Ocon recorded the Enstone team’s first podium result at the Monaco Grand Prix since Robert Kubica, who finished third with Renault in 2010. It was the Alpine team’s first podium finish since the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix.

This was Ocon’s first podium result since his victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix. He was voted Driver Of The Day; this being the first time he won the accolade.

2023 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon finished in eighth place at the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix, picking up points for the third consecutive season at the track.

2023 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon maintained both his 100% Q3 rate and 100% points rate at the Canadian Grand Prix. Ocon’s qualifying position at the Canadian Grand Prix has improved by one position on each of his four visits to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Sixth was his best Saturday result at the track to date.

Finishing in eighth place and scoring four points, Ocon overtook Romain Grosjean as the French driver to have scored the second-most points in Formula 1.

2023 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon equalled his worst qualifying result of the season with 12th place. He went on to finish 12th in the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix but then dropped to 14th in the final order after receiving multiple post race penalties. Ocon was handed four penalties for exceeding track limits during the race. It’s a new record for the most penalties a driver has received in a single Grand Prix. He finished outside of the points for the first time since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

With 13th place in qualifying for the 2023 British Grand Prix, Esteban Ocon recorded his worst qualifying result of the 2023 season to date. 2018 remains the only time that Ocon has out-qualified a team-mate at Silverstone. Ocon was the first retiree from the 2023 British Grand Prix, recording his third DNF of the year.

2023 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon recorded his first retirement from six appearances at the Hungaroring. Ocon recorded the first retirement for the driver starting 12th on the grid in almost a year. The last driver to retire starting there was Lance Stroll at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix.

2023 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

Qualifying only 15th for the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, Esteban Ocon recorded his worst qualifying result of the season to date – and his worst qualifying result in a conventional qualifying session since setting the 18th fastest time at the 2022 United States Grand Prix. This was the first time since his first appearance in 2016 that Ocon failed to reach Q3 at the Belgian Grand Prix.

With eighth place in the race, Ocon scored points for the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix. The 2023 Belgian Grand Prix is Ocon’s sixth consecutive points-scoring Spa appearance. All of his last three points scoring results have been eighth place finishes. This was the first time since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix that Ocon finished in a better position than where he started.

2023 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon recorded his worst qualifying result of the season to date with 17th place. It was his first Q1 exit of the year having last been eliminated in Q1 at the 2022 United States Grand Prix. This was the fifth race in a row at which Ocon failed to reach Q3; his longest streak without a Q3 appearance since the five races between the 2021 Monaco and Austrian Grands Prix.

2023 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon recorded his first Q1 exit at the Italian Grand Prix since his first appearance at the track in 2016. 18th is Ocon’s worst qualifying result of the season to date. He failed to reach Q3 for the sixth consecutive race, which is his longest streak without a Q3 appearance since he failed to qualify in the top ten on any of his first 12 Formula 1 appearances.

Of the 19 drivers who started the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, Ocon was the only one who failed to finish. Ocon recorded his fifth retirement of the 2023 season – and his third in the last five races. As a result, Ocon lost his 100% finishing record at Monza, having never failed to finish on any of his previous six F1 appearances at the track.

2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon raced on his birthday at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, making it the 75th occasion on which a Formula 1 driver has raced in a Grand Prix on their birthday. This was the second time Ocon raced in Singapore on his birthday and the third time that a driver raced on their 27th birthday.

In the race, Ocon recorded his fourth DNF in the last six races. This was Ocon’s third consecutive retirement at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Ocon’s eighth place in qualifying for the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix marked the first time since the British Grand Prix that an Alpine driver appeared in Q3. Ocon reached Q3 for the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix. It was the first time he qualified in the top ten in six races, ending his longest Q3-less streak since the first races of his career.

2023 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

Qualifying 14th, Esteban Ocon failed to reach Q3 for the seventh time in the last eight races at the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix. This was the first time since 2016 that Ocon did not reach Q3 at the Japanese Grand Prix. It was also the first time Ocon has ever been out-qualified by a team-mate at Suzuka.

2023 QATAR GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon progressed to Q3 for only the second time in the last nine races. He qualified eighth, which is the same position as when he last reached Q3 at the Singapore Grand Prix. Finishing seventh, Ocon recorded his best race result since his podium finish at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix.

2023 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon qualified eighth for the third time in the last four races at the 2023 United States Grand Prix. This was the first time Ocon qualified in the top ten at Circuit of The Americas since 2018. Ocon was the first driver to retire from the race. Retiring with damage to his sidepod, this was the Alpine driver’s seventh retirement of the season.

2023 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon was eliminated in Q1 at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, recording the Enstone team’s third Q1 exit at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Ocon recorded his first Q1 exit in Mexico since his maiden season in 2016. Ocon’s tenth place finish in the race made this the fifth consecutive race in Mexico at which the Enstone-based team scored a point.

2023 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon out-qualified Pierre Gasly for the first time since the Singapore Grand Prix. Ocon finished in tenth place for a second consecutive race. It was his third consecutive points finish in Brazil.

2023 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

Esteban Ocon qualified 17th for the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix – his worst qualifying result since setting the 18th fastest time in Q1 at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix. Having started 16th, Ocon finished fourth in the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix. It was his first top six finish since his podium at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix. Fourth is the best result recorded from 16th on the grid since Max Verstappen finished on the podium having started 16th at the 2017 Chinese Grand Prix.

2023 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

Qualifying 12th, Esteban Ocon failed to reach Q3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for the first time since 2020. Ocon finished where he started in the race, completing a race outside of the points for the first time since the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix. This was the first time Ocon failed to score in Abu Dhabi since his retirement in 2018.
