RACE BY RACE: CHARLES LECLERC‘S 2023 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2023 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Last year’s Bahrain Grand Prix winner, Charles Leclerc, was the second retirement from the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix. This was Leclerc’s first retirement since the 2022 French Grand Prix, ending a streak of ten consecutive points finishes. This was Leclerc’s second retirement at Bahrain International Circuit. His only other retirement at the circuit came on the opening lap of the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.

2023 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

The top two qualified in the same order at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix as they did in 2022, with Sergio Perez taking pole position and Charles Leclerc setting the second fastest time. However, Leclerc was demoted ten positions on the grid due to a power unit penalty. Leclerc is one of only three drivers who’ve out-qualified their team-mate on every appearance in Jeddah.

With a seventh place finish, Leclerc picked up his first points of the year. This marked the first time Leclerc finished outside of the top six in a race in which he reached the chequered flag since the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

2023 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

Setting the seventh fastest time, Charles Leclerc qualified outside of the top six for only the second time in the last 16 races at the 2023 Australian Grand Prix. He became the first driver to retire from the race, recording his second retirement in the first three races of the season. This was the first time Leclerc failed to finish at Albert Park. Leclerc became the first driver to record a first lap retirement at the Australian Grand Prix since Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean in 2015.

2023 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc secured his first pole position of the season at the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This marked his 19th pole position, putting him 17th in the all-time list of most Formula 1 poles. He also set the fastest qualifying time for the F1 Sprint but failed to win either Saturday or Sunday’s race.

Baku City Circuit is the first circuit at which Leclerc has recorded three pole positions and remains the only driver to record multiple pole positions at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Leclerc finished the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in third place, recording the 25th podium finish of his career. He equalled Jacky Ickx for 42nd in the all-time list of most podiums in F1. This was Leclerc’s first podium finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. It’s the 17th circuit at which he has recorded a top three result.

2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

Bringing out the red flags with a crash in Q3, Charles Leclerc qualified only seventh for the 2023 Miami Grand Prix. He equalled his worst qualifying result of the season to date, having also qualified seventh at the Australian Grand Prix.

2023 MONACO GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc qualified in third place for the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix but dropped to sixth on the final grid after being handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding. Leclerc reached the chequered flag at his home race for the second consecutive season, finishing where he started. This was the first time Leclerc did not lose a position from where he started at the Monaco Grand Prix.

2023 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc was the unexpected name to miss out on a slot in Q2 at the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix. The Monegasque driver recorded his first Q1 elimination since the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix. Qualifying in 19th, the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix was the first time Leclerc qualified on the back row of the grid since the third race of his Formula 1 career at the 2018 Chinese Grand Prix. The preceding race – the 2018 Bahrain Grand Prix – is the only other back row qualification of his career.

Leclerc started from the pit lane for the first time in his Formula 1 career. He finished the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix in 11th place. It marked the first time Leclerc has reached the chequered flag without scoring since finishing 15th in the 2021 Russian Grand Prix.

2023 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc’s third place in qualifying for the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix remains the only time he has reached Q3 in Montreal. In 2023, he recorded his third Q2 exit from his four appearances at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

With fourth place in the race, Leclerc recorded his best result since finishing on the podium at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Along with Esteban Ocon, Leclerc equalled Gilles Villeneuve as the driver to have made the most appearances without failing to score in Montreal.

2023 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

After recording Ferrari’s worst F1 Sprint result to date with 12th place on Saturday, Charles Leclerc started from the front row at the Austrian Grand Prix for the second year in a row. Finishing the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix as runner-up, Leclerc recorded the 800th podium for Ferrari in Formula 1. Ferrari are the first team to reach the milestone.

This was Leclerc’s second podium finish of the 2023 season and his best result of the year to date. He finished third in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Leclerc recorded the 25th podium finish of his carer. He became the 43rd driver to record 25 podiums in F1 and equalled the career tally of Jacky Ickx.

On Lap 25 of the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix, Leclerc became the first non-Red Bull driver to lead a lap of a Grand Prix since Lap 2 of the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. It was Leclerc who led that lap too.

2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Along with Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc maintained his 100% Q3 appearance record at Silverstone. Leclerc finished ninth in the 2023 British Grand Prix. It was the first time he recorded a result outside of the top four positions at Silverstone since his retirement with Sauber in 2018.

2023 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

With Charles Leclerc qualifying sixth and Carlos Sainz failing to reach Q3, 2023 was the second time in the last three seasons that neither Ferrari driver has qualified in the top five at the Hungarian Grand Prix. In the race, Leclerc finished seventh and Sainz was eighth, making this the first Hungarian Grand Prix in which neither Ferrari driver finished in the top six since 2006, when their drivers also finished seventh and eighth.

2023 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc inherited pole position from Max Verstappen, taking the 20th pole of his career. That saw him equal Valtteri Bottas as the non-champion to have started from pole on the most occasions. Leclerc became the 11th driver to take multiple poles at Spa-Francorchamps.

Leclerc’s third place in the race ensured that the streak of every Belgian Grand Prix polesitter finishing on the podium since 2007 continued. With his 27th podium result, Leclerc has now had as many top three finishes in his career as Bruce McLaren and Ralf Schumacher. This was Leclerc’s third podium finish of the year. This was the first time Leclerc finished on the podium at Spa since taking his maiden win at the track at the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix.

2023 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

Qualifying only ninth after a crash in Q3, Leclerc qualified outside of the top six positions for the first time since the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix. It was also the first time since then that he was been out-qualified by Sainz. Leclerc retired from the race with damage to his floor. This marked his third retirement of the season – his first since the Australian Grand Prix.

2023 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

For the second year in a row, Ferrari qualified first and third at Monza – though last year their drivers were reversed. Charles Leclerc started third and finished fourth, making this the fifth consecutive race in which he has finished in a worse position than where he started.

2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc qualified in third position for the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix and was out-qualified by a team-mate at Marina Bay Circuit for the first time in his career. Leclerc missed out on the front row by 0.007 seconds, meaning 2014 remains the last time that a team locked out the front row at the Singapore Grand Prix.

2023 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc out-qualified his team-mate for the first time in three races. Finishing fourth at the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix, Leclerc became the 14th driver to have scored 1,000 points in Formula 1 history. His points also ensured Monaco became the 11th nation to have scored 1,000 points in F1. Louis Chiron is the only other Monegasque driver to have picked up points. This was the third consecutive race in which Leclerc finished fourth. It was the first time since the Austrian Grand Prix that Leclerc has not lost any positions from where he started.

2023 QATAR GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc finished fifth in the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, recording a fourth consecutive top five finish. It’s his longest run of top five finishes since his five consecutive podiums between the 2022 Dutch and United States Grands Prix.

2023 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc recorded his third pole position of the season with pole at the 2023 United States Grand Prix. This was the 21st pole position of his Formula 1 career, seeing him overtake Valtteri Bottas as the non-champion to have taken the most poles. Leclerc became the fifth different polesitter in the last five races held at Circuit of The Americas, extending the record for most consecutive different polesitters at the track.

After his car failed post-race checks, Leclerc became the first polesitter to be disqualified from a Formula 1 race since Ralf Schumacher at the 2004 Canadian Grand Prix. It was the sixth time this has occurred in F1 history. Leclerc recorded the tenth disqualification for Ferrari in their Formula 1 history. It was the team’s first DSQ since Felipe Massa was disqualified from the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix.

2023 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

The 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix marked Charles Leclerc’s 100th start with Ferrari. He became the sixth driver to have made a century of starts with the Scuderia.

Leclerc took pole position for the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, becoming the first repeat polesitter in the last 12 races at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Leclerc recorded the 22nd pole position of his career, equalling Fernando Alonso for 14th in the all-time list of Formula 1 pole positions. It was the first time Leclerc took consecutive pole positions for the first time since the 2022 Italian and Singapore Grands Prix.

Leclerc’s third place finish at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix ensured Ferrari maintained their record for most podium finishes in Mexico. This was the team’s 12th top three finish in the country. Leclerc finished on the podium for the fourth time this season, recording his first top three result since the Belgian Grand Prix. Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is the 18th different circuit at which Leclerc has finished on the podium in his Formula 1 career.

2023 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc qualified in second place for the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, recording his third consecutive front row qualification. It was the first time he qualified on the front row at three races in a row since the 2022 Singapore, Japanese and United States Grands Prix. This was the first time Leclerc qualified in the top three at Interlagos and the first time he out-qualified his team-mate at the track.

Leclerc crashed out on the formation lap due to a hydraulic failure. This was the second DNS of Leclerc’ s career, both of which have come when he was due to line-up on the front row of the grid. Leclerc also failed to start the 2021 Monaco Grand Prix, for which he took pole. Leclerc became the fifth driver to record a DNS at Interlagos. He was the first driver to do so since Romain Grosjean, who crashed on his way to the grid in wet conditions in 2016.

2023 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc set the fastest time in qualifying for the fourth time this year at the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix and secured his fifth pole position of the year. This was the 23rd pole position of Leclerc’s career, moving ahead of Fernando Alonso to 14th in the all-time pole position list. He also equalled Niki Lauda for second in the list of most pole positions recorded with Ferrari. This was the fourth consecutive race at which Leclerc qualified on the front row.

Leclerc passed Sergio Perez in the final sector on the final lap of the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix to secure a second place finish. This was the 12th race in a row for which Leclerc took pole position that he has failed to win. It’s the second longest run of consecutive career poles without a win. In total, it is the 19th time Leclerc has failed to win from pole position. That saw him equal Nelson Piquet for fifth in the list of most races at which a driver has taken pole but has not won the race.

Leclerc recorded his 29th podium finish, overtaking Clay Regazzoni for 37th on the all-time list of most podiums in Formula 1.

2023 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

On the weekend that he overtook Rubens Barrichello for fifth in the list of most starts with Ferrari, Charles Leclerc gave the team their first ever front row qualification at Yas Marina Circuit. He qualified on the front row for a fifth consecutive race, having last done so between the 2022 Dutch and United States Grands Prix.

Leclerc’s Q3 appearance at the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix made Ferrari the first team to record 600 Q3 appearances since the knockout system was introduced in 2006. Leclerc maintained his 100% Q3 appearance record in Abu Dhabi.

On Sunday, Leclerc recorded the 30th podium finish of his career, equalling Juan Pablo Montoya for 36th in the all-time list. He finished as runner-up at consecutive races for the first time since the 2022 Italian and Singapore Grands Prix.
