RACE BY RACE: FERNANDO ALONSO‘S 2023 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2023 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

At the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso became the first driver to embark on his 20th Formula 1 season. With Oscar Piastri on the grid, Alonso became the first driver to race against a competitor who was born after his Formula 1 debut. Piastri was born one month after Alonso’s debut at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix.

Alonso and Aston Martin impressed in Free Practice, with this being the first time since the 2014 Singapore Grand Prix that Alonso was fastest in two practice sessions over a race weekend. Alonso qualified in fifth place for the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix, marking his best qualifying result in Bahrain since he qualified third for the 2013 Bahrain Grand Prix.

On his Aston Martin debut, Alonso finished in third place. He became only the fifth driver in Formula 1 history to finish on the podium with five different constructors. Only Stirling Moss and John Surtees have finished on the podium with more constructors than Alonso.

The 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix marked Fernando Alonso’s 99th podium finish – putting him one short of being only the sixth driver to record 100 podium finishes in Formula 1. This was his first podium finish since the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix and his first podium finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix since winning the 2010 race with Ferrari.

Finishing on the podium at the age of 41 years, 7 months and 5 days, Alonso became the oldest Formula 1 podium finisher since Michael Schumacher at the 2012 European Grand Prix. Since 1960 only six drivers have finished on the podium at an older age than Alonso at the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix: Maurice Trintignant, John Love, Jack Brabham, Mario Andretti, Jacques Laffite and Michael Schumacher.

2023 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

Fernando Alonso qualified in third place and moved up to second on the grid as a result of Charles Leclerc’s grid penalty. The 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix marks the 39th front row start of his car and his first since the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix. It was also the first front row start for an Aston Martin driver since Roy Salvadori at the 1959 British Grand Prix, which was held at the Aintree circuit.

Despite a farcical situation after the race where he was stripped of his podium only to then have it reinstated, Alonso became the sixth driver to record 100 podium finishes in Formula 1. He is the first driver to achieve the feat since Kimi Raikkonen at the 2018 Italian Grand Prix.

Alonso’s podium finish saw him join Raikkonen and Michael Schumacher as only the third driver to have a points-scoring period of over 20 years in Formula 1. The Spaniard’s latest points came 20 years and 10 days since he first scored at the 2003 Australian Grand Prix.

Alonso’s podiums in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia mark the first time he has finished in the top five at consecutive races since the 2014 German and Hungarian Grands Prix. It’s also the first time he’s finished in the top four at two races in a row since the start of the 2014 season, plus the first time he has secured podium results at successive races since the 2013 Belgian, Italian and Singapore Grands Prix.

Alonso led three laps of the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which is the most laps he has led in a single race since leading 27 laps at the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Alonso’s third place marked the first time he picked up points at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix as well as the Aston Martin team’s first points in Jeddah.

2023 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

On the weekend on which he became the driver to have started the Australian Grand Prix on the most occasions, Fernando Alonso equalled his team’s best ever qualifying result at Albert Park with fourth place. On Sunday, Alonso recorded the Silverstone-based team’s first podium finish at the Australian Grand Prix since Heinz Harald-Frentzen finished second for Jordan in 1999.

After recording his best qualifying result in Australia since 2010, Alonso became the fourth driver to record six podium finishes at Albert Park. This marked the first time since the 2013 Belgian, Italian and Singapore Grands Prix that Alonso finished on the podium for three consecutive races. It’s also the first time since 2013 that Alonso finished in the top three at the Australian Grand Prix.

2023 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Qualifying sixth for the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso became the third driver to record 200 Q3 appearances, after Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. While Alonso recorded his worst qualifying result of the year to date, he also recorded his best Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying result to date.

Alonso failed to finish on the podium for the first time in 2023. Finishing in fourth place, Alonso recorded his best-ever result in Azerbaijan, bettering his previous top result of sixth at the circuit, recorded with Alpine in 2021.

2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

Fernando Alonso lined up on the front row of the grid for the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, recording his first top five start in the United States since the 2007 United States Grand Prix. This was the first time Alonso qualified on the front row of the grid – without any grid penalties – since the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix. It was the first time he did so in a dry Q3 session since the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix.

In the race, Fernando Alonso recorded a podium result for the fourth time in the first five races of the 2023 season. This was his 102nd podium result, putting him one short of equalling Kimi Raikkonen for fifth in the list of most Formula 1 podium finishes. With Alonso finishing in the top three, Spain overtook Austria for ninth on the list of most podiums for a nation in Formula 1. This was the 119th podium finish for a Spaniard.

2023 MONACO GRAND PRIX

On the weekend at he equalled Rubens Barrichello as the driver who has made the most starts at the Monaco Grand Prix, Alonso finished in the top two for the first time since the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix. This was his first podium finish at the Monaco Grand Prix since 2012, while Saturday saw him record his first front row start in Monaco since 2007. This is the first time Alonso qualified on the front row at successive events since taking back-to-back poles at the 2012 British and German Grands Prix.

Alonso’s latest podium saw him equal Kimi Raikkonen’s career tally of 103 podiums. It put Alonso equal fifth in the all-time list of most top three finishes. He also became only the ninth driver to record five or more podium results in Monaco – and the first to have done so with four different teams.

2023 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

On the weekend that Fernando Alonso became the first driver to make 20 appearances at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, he equalled Michael Schumacher as the driver to have reached the chequered flag on the most occasions at the track.

With a damaged floor in qualifying, Alonso could qualify no higher than ninth. This was the first time Alonso qualified outside of the top six in 2023. On Sunday, he recorded his worst result of the season to date with seventh place. It was the first time he failed to finish in the top four in 2023 – but seventh is Alonso’s best result at his home event since finishing sixth with Ferrari in 2014.

2023 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Fernando Alonso made his 18th appearance at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, equalling Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello as the driver to have made the most Canadian Grand Prix starts. On Lap 53 of the race, Alonso became the third driver – after Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen – to have raced 1,000 Grand Prix laps at the track.

After qualifying third and keeping up his record of out-qualifying his team-mate on every appearance at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve since 2008, Alonso moved up to second on the final grid. Alonso finished where he started, recording the 104th podium finish of his career. That saw him overtake Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have scored the fifth most podiums in Formula 1 history.

2023 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

With seventh place, Fernando Alonso qualified in the top seven at the Austrian Grand Prix for only the second time in his career. His only better qualifying result at the Red Bull Ring was fourth place with Ferrari in 2014. With fifth place in the race, he maintained his record of finishing in the top seven at every race so far this year and equalled his best ever Austrian Grand Prix result. He also finished fifth with Ferrari in 2014.

2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Fernando Alonso made his 20th start at the Silverstone circuit, equalling Kimi Raikkonen’s record of 20 starts at the track. Along with Lewis Hamilton, Alonso also equalled Raikkonen for the most number of races completed at the British venue (18).

On Lap 34 of the 2023 British Grand Prix, Alonso overtook Rubens Barrichello as the driver to have raced the most Grand Prix laps at Silverstone. After the 2023 race, Alonso has raced 1,068 laps at the track.

On his 150th start in car number 14, Alonso equalled both his worst qualifying result of the season so far (ninth) and his worst race result of 2023 to date (seventh).

2023 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Over the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso became the first driver to start the Hungarian Grand Prix on 20 occasions, set a new record for most top ten qualifications at the Hungaroring (along with Lewis Hamilton) and became the first driver to score points on 16 occasions (also along with Hamilton). On Lap 6, Alonso overtook Kimi Raikkonen as the driver who has raced the most laps at the Hungaroring and, at the finish line, he became the first driver to reach the chequered flag on 17 occasions at the track.

With Carlos Sainz failing to reach Q3, Alonso is now the only driver to reach Q3 at every race in 2023. He reached Q3 at the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix by just 0.002 seconds. With ninth place in the race, Alonso finished outside of the top seven for the first time in the 2023 season. It was the first time Alonso finished outside of the top eight at the Hungarian Grand Prix since his 2009 retirement.

2023 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

At the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso became the first driver to make 18 appearances at Spa Francorchamps in his Formula 1 career. He also become the first driver to start the Belgian Grand Prix on 17 occasions.

Qualifying ninth for the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, Alonso equalled his worst qualifying result of the season for a second consecutive race. He remains the only driver to reach Q3 at every race this year – though he was out in Q2 during the Sprint Shootout.

After failing to finish Saturday’s Sprint, Alonso returned to the top five on Sunday for the first time since the Austrian Grand Prix with a fifth place result. 2023 is the second consecutive season in which Alonso finished fifth at the Belgian Grand Prix.

During the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton joined a group of only five other drivers who’ve raced more than 500 Grand Prix laps at Spa during their Formula 1 careers. Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa and Rubens Barrichello are the only other drivers in the group.

2023 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

Setting the fifth fastest time, Fernando Alonso lined up fifth on the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix grid. That saw him equal Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have started fifth on the most occasions in F1. This was Alonso’s 39th start from fifth on the grid. Alonso qualified in the top five for the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix.

On Sunday, Alonso finished as runner-up. This was his 105th podium finish, putting him a single top three finish away from equalling Alain Prost for fourth in Formula 1’s all-time podium list. With his latest podium finish coming 20 years, 5 months and 4 days after his first at the 2003 Malaysian Grand Prix, Alonso set a new record for the longest gap between first and last podium finishes in Formula 1. Michael Schumacher set the previous record at the 2012 European Grand Prix.

Alonso recorded the fastest lap of the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix. It marked his first fastest lap since the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix – the second longest gap between fastest laps in F1 history. The only longer gap between fastest laps was almost eight years, for Giancarlo Fisichella between the 1997 and 2005 Spanish Grands Prix.

Of the drivers who’ve taken part in all of the last three Dutch Grand Prix weekends, Alonso is the only one to have gained positions on all three occasions.

2023 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Becoming the first driver to start 20 Formula 1 races at Monza, on the tenth lap of the race, Alonso overtook Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have raced the most Grand Prix laps at the circuit. On Lap 16 of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso became the first driver to have raced 100,000km in Grands Prix in Formula 1 history. Finishing only 15th in the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Alonso failed to score for the first time in the 2023 season.

The Spaniard could qualify no higher than 17th, making this the first race of the 2023 season at which he did not qualify in the top ten. Alonso equalled Nico Hulkenberg as the driver who has recorded the most retirements at the Texas track.

2023 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

After reaching Q3 at all of the first 17 races of the year, the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix was the second consecutive race at which Fernando Alonso failed to qualify in the top ten. 2022 remains the only time that Alonso has reached Q3 in Mexico. This was Alonso’s first Q2 exit since the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Alonso failed to finish the race, making this the fourth time in his seven appearances at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez that he failed to reach the chequered flag.

2023 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

At the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso became the first driver to make 20 starts at Interlagos, overtaking Rubens Barrichello’s former record of 19 starts at the track.
