
Russell records Mercedes’ 150th pole position, Hamilton qualifies on the front row with Ferrari for the first time and Stroll out-qualifies Alonso for the first time in almost two years. Here are the facts and statistics from qualifying at the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix!
RUSSELL ON POLE AT THE 2026 BARCELONA GRAND PRIX
George Russell secured his third pole position of the season at the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix.
This was Russell’s tenth pole position, making him the 38th driver to secure as many as ten pole positions in Formula 1.
This was the 150th pole position for Mercedes in Formula 1. They became the third constructor to reach the milestone, after Ferrari at the 2002 Malaysian Grand Prix and McLaren at the 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Mercedes became the first team to record as many as ten pole positions at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
This was the first time Russell qualified in the top three in Barcelona, having previously qualified fourth here in 2022, 2024 and 2025.
IN THE TOP TEN
For the first time, Lewis Hamilton secured a front row start for a Grand Prix with Ferrari.
This was Hamilton’s first front row qualification since the 2024 British Grand Prix.
Kimi Antonelli qualified third for the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix, missing out on a place on the front row for the first time this season.
This was the first time since 2021 that both Mercedes drivers qualified in the top three at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
For the 35th Grand Prix in a row, both McLaren drivers reached Q3 at the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix.
Lando Norris qualified fourth for the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix – the first time he has qualified outside of the top three at Catalunya since 2022.
Qualifying seventh for the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri equalled his worst qualifying result of the season for the second race weekend in a row.
Setting the fifth fastest time, Max Verstappen qualified outside of the top four in Barcelona for the first time since 2018.
Liam Lawson reached Q3 for the second race weekend in a row. He qualified eighth, equalling his best qualifying result of the season so far. He also qualified eighth for the Australian Grand Prix.
Lawson’s eighth place marked the first top eight qualifying result for the Red Bull junior team in Barcelona since Carlos Sainz qualified eighth for Toro Rosso at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix.
For the first time since the 2025 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Nico Hulkenberg progressed to Q3. It ended a streak of six consecutive Q2 exits.
This was only Hulkenberg’s second Q3 appearance from 13 appearances at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Hulkenberg recorded Audi’s third Q3 appearance of the season. The previous two, recorded by Gabriel Bortoleto, were at the Australian and Japanese Grands Prix.
Hulkenberg recorded the first Q3 appearance for the Hinwil team at Catalunya since 2022. It was only the second Q3 appearance for the team at this track in the last 14 years.
Charles Leclerc caused a red flag in the early stages of Q3 at the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix after crashing out. It left him unable to set a lap time. It marked his first qualification outside of the top eight since he qualified tenth for the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix.
This was only the fourth time in the last 30 races that Leclerc has qualified tenth or lower.
Oscar Piastri, Kimi Antonelli, Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar maintained their 100% Q3 appearance records at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
ELIMINATED IN Q2
Arvid Lindblad qualified in 11th place for the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix. This was the third race in a row at which one Racing Bulls driver has exited in Q2 while the other reached Q3.
Carlos Sainz exited in Q2 for the fifth race weekend in a row.
2017 remains the last time that a Williams driver reached Q3 in Barcelona.
Pierre Gasly failed to reach Q3 at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the first time since 2022. With both Gasly and Franco Colapinto eliminated in Q2, it was also the first time since 2022 that neither Alpine car qualified in the top ten in Barcelona.
Gasly equalled his worst qualifying result of the season so far.
With Ollie Bearman out in Q2 and Esteban Ocon out in Q1, this was the third year in a row that neither Haas driver reached Q3 at the Catalunya circuit.
OUT IN Q1
Aston Martin and Cadillac continued their record of seeing both cars eliminated in Q1 so far this season.
This was Sergio Perez’s first Q1 exit in Spain since 2015.
Alex Albon was eliminated in Q1 for the fourth time in the last six races. It was the fourth time in the last five years that he has been eliminated in the first part of qualifying at Catalunya.
Albon’s Q1 exit makes this the 11th consecutive season in which at least one Williams driver has been eliminated in Q1 at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Qualifying 18th, Albon equalled his worst qualifying result of the season to date.
For the first time since the 2024 British Grand Prix, Lance Stroll out-qualified Fernando Alonso. It ended a 42 race streak of successive Grand Prix out-qualifications by the Spaniard.
This was only the second time, after 2022, that Alonso has been out in Q1 at his home race.
This is the third time in his career that Alonso has qualified in 22nd position, after the 2016 Belgian and Malaysian Grands Prix.
This is the Silverstone-based team’s third double Q1 exit at Catalunya since 2010, after 2015 and 2022.
Esteban Ocon exited in Q1 for the third race weekend in a row. This was the second year in succession that the Frenchman was out in Q1 in Barcelona.
This is the fourth year in a row that a Haas driver has been eliminated in Q1 at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
