2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix: Race Statistics, Facts and Trivia

Verstappen wins back to back races for the first time in 15 months, Sainz secures the first podium for Williams in four years and Lawson records the first top five result for a driver from New Zealand since 1976. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix!

VERSTAPPEN WINS THE 2025 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen won the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, taking the 67th victory of his Formula 1 career. This was his second consecutive win, taking victories at successive races for the first time since the 2024 Canadian and Spanish Grands Prix.

Verstappen became only the second repeat winner at Baku City Circuit in the nine races held here to date. Sergio Perez is the only other repeat winner in Azerbaijan.

Taking pole position, setting the fastest lap and leading every lap on his way to victory, Verstappen equalled Lewis Hamilton for second on the list of most Grand Slams in Formula 1. Only Jim Clark, with eight, has more. This was Verstappen’s first Grand Slam since the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix.

Verstappen is the second driver, after Nico Rosberg in 2016, to record a Grand Slam in Azerbaijan.

This was the 16th race which Verstappen led from start to finish. He overtook Sebastian Vettel in the list of most Grands Prix led from start to end. Only Lewis Hamilton (23) and Ayrton Senna (19) now sit ahead of Verstappen on the list.

Verstappen recorded Red Bull’s fifth victory in Azerbaijan, extending the team’s record for most Baku wins. This was their fourth win in the last five Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekends.

Setting the fastest lap, Verstappen became the first driver to record the fastest lap on multiple occasions at Baku City Circuit. Red Bull equalled Mercedes for the most fastest laps at the track, this being their third.

Verstappen became only the third polesitter to win at Baku City Circuit, after Nico Rosberg in 2016 and Valtteri Bottas in 2019.

Winning by 19.199 seconds, this was the second largest winning margin in Azerbaijan Grand Prix history. It is bettered only by Verstappen’s first win in Baku, in 2022, when he took victory by 20.823 seconds.

ON THE PODIUM

George Russell and Carlos Sainz joined Max Verstappen on the podium at the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. It was the first time that the trio shared the top three positions.

Russell finished on the podium in Baku for the third time. This was his best result to date at the circuit, having finished third in both 2022 and 2024.

Russell’s second place finish saw Britain equal Mexico for the most podium finishes in Baku.

This was the best result for a Mercedes driver at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix since the team recorded a 1-2 result in 2019.

This was the third time in the last four years that the driver starting fifth in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has finished on the podium.

Sainz recorded Williams’ first podium finish since Russell finished as runner-up with the team at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. It was the team’s first podium in a race which ran to full distance since Lance Stroll finished third in the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

This was Sainz’s first top seven finish of the season and his first podium finish since finishing second on his Ferrari farewell at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Sainz’s podium finish saw him voted Driver Of The Day for the eighth time in his career.

Sainz’s third place finish brought Williams more points than they have scored in the last six Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekends combined.

The last time Williams recorded a podium finish in Azerbaijan, in 2017, a Red Bull driver led home a Mercedes driver – just like in 2025.

IN THE POINTS

Finishing fourth in the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli recorded his best top eight result since his podium finish at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix.

Liam Lawson recorded a career-best fifth place finish in the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This marked the first top five result for a driver from New Zealand since Chris Amon finished fifth in the 1976 Spanish Grand Prix.

With sixth place in the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Yuki Tsunoda recorded his best result of the season to date. It was Tsunoda’s first top six finish since finishing fourth in the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Lando Norris finished seventh in the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Of races he has finished, this was the first time he finished outside of the top four since finishing tenth in the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix.

Norris maintained his 100% points-scoring record at Baku City Circuit, though he remains yet to finish on the podium at the track.

This was McLaren’s lowest points score in a race weekend since the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Finishing eighth in the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton remains the driver who has scored points on the most occasions in Baku. This was his seventh points-scoring appearance in Azerbaijan.

Hamilton remains the only driver who has completed every racing lap to date in Azerbaijan.

Charles Leclerc finished ninth in the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, recording his worst result in Baku since failing to finish in 2022. Of races he has finished here, this was the first time he finished outside of the top six.

Isack Hadjar finished in tenth place, ensuring a double points finish for Racing Bulls. This was the team’s second double points finish in Azerbaijan, having last achieved the feat in 2021.

This was the third race in a row in which Hadjar scored a point.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

With Fernando Alonso 15th and Lance Stroll 17th, this was the first time in Baku’s history on the calendar that the Silverstone-based team failed to score a point, as well as the first time neither of the team’s drivers finished in the top six.

This was the first time since his retirement in 2016 that Alonso failed to score a point in Azerbaijan.

Like Aston Martin, Haas endured a point-less afternoon for the seventh time in their nine visits to Baku. Meanwhile, this was the third year in a row that Alpine failed to score at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and the fourth year in a row that Sauber left the track point-less.

This was only the second time in the last nine races that Sauber failed to score a point.

Alex Albon finished 13th in the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix – his worst result from his five visits to Baku.

PIASTRI CRASHES OUT ON LAP 1

A lock-up on the first lap of the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix saw Oscar Piastri hit the barriers and retire. He was the only driver to fail to finish the race.

Piastri’s crash ended the third-longest scoring streak in Formula 1 history. It ends at 34 races, having started at the 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It also ended a 44-race finishing streak, dating back to the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix in Piastri’s maiden season. It was the second-longest finish streak in F1.

Piastri’s DNF means that George Russell is now the only driver who has completed every Grand Prix in the 2025 season.

Piastri became the first McLaren driver to retire in Baku since Fernando Alonso failed to finish the 2016 European Grand Prix – the inaugural race at the track.

Last year’s victory remains the only time that Piastri has scored a point in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
