Verstappen hopes to add a 24th different circuit to his winning collection, Ocon races on his birthday and Alonso could reach 100,000km raced. Here are the milestones and the records which could be broken at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix!
THE 2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX MILESTONES
The 2023 Singapore Grand Prix will be the 1,094th World Championship event in Formula 1 history.
This will be the 14th time that Formula 1 has raced in Singapore. It will be the 14th Singapore Grand Prix held at Marina Bay Street Circuit since the circuit joined the calendar in 2008.
The 2023 Singapore Grand Prix will be the 22nd Singapore Grand Prix since the event was first held – as a non-championship race – in 1966.
Esteban Ocon races on his birthday at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, making this the 75th occasion on which a Formula 1 driver has raced in a Grand Prix on their birthday. This is the second time Ocon has raced in Singapore on his birthday. He remains the only driver to have done so. It’s the third time a driver has raced on their 27th birthday. Ocon is the first driver to do so since Valtteri Bottas at the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix.
This will be the first Singapore Grand Prix which will not feature Sebastian Vettel on the grid. Vettel’s absence will make Lewis Hamilton the only driver to have started every Singapore Grand Prix held at Marina Bay Circuit to date.
Lando Norris makes his 97th start with McLaren this weekend, overtaking Ayrton Senna as the driver to have made the sixth most starts with the team.
Sergio Perez will make his 250th Grand Prix start this weekend, becoming the 11th driver to have made 250 starts.
The 2023 Singapore Grand Prix will be the second round of the World Championship to be held on September 17. The only other race held on this date was the 2017 Singapore Grand Prix.
The 15th lap of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix will be the 800th Grand Prix racing lap to take place at Marina Bay Street Circuit.
MORE MILESTONES FOR MAX?
To extend his consecutive win record to 11 races in a row, Max Verstappen will need to win the Singapore Grand Prix for the first time in his career. Doing so would make Marina Bay Street Circuit the 24th different venue at which Verstappen has won. That would see him overtake Michael Schumacher as the driver who has won at the second most circuits during their Formula 1 career.
Verstappen has never previously taken pole position at the Singapore Grand Prix either. Pole this weekend would make Marina Bay Street Circuit the 19th circuit at which Verstappen has taken pole. It would see him equal Michael Schumacher for sixth in the list of most different circuits at which a driver has taken pole in F1.
A fastest lap for Max Verstappen this weekend would make him the fifth driver to have taken fastest lap at 20 different circuits during his Formula 1 career. Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen are the only other drivers to have reached that milestone.
Max Verstappen has led 661 laps so far in the 2023 Formula 1 season. If he leads another 34 during the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, he will rise to second in the list of most laps led in a single season. Sebastian Vettel holds the record for most laps led in a single year, with 739 in 2011.
A top three finish for Max Verstappen would see him equal the second longest podium streak in Formula 1 history. He has finished on the podium at the last 15 races – one away from equalling Lewis Hamilton’s longest consecutive podium streak.
Should he extend his championship lead by 11 points at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen will set a new record for the largest championship lead ever held in Formula 1. He currently leads the championship by 145 points from team-mate Sergio Perez. The record for the largest lead is 155 points, set by Sebastian Vettel at the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix.
A top ten finish for Max Verstappen will see him set a new second-longest points scoring streak in Formula 1 history. Verstappen has scored at all of the last 33 races and another top ten result at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix will see him overtake Lewis Hamilton’s 33-race scoring streak between the 2016 Japanese Grand Prix and the 2018 French Grand Prix.
If Max Verstappen crosses the finish line, he will equal Daniel Ricciardo for the second longest finishing streak in Formula 1 history, at 34 races. Lewis Hamilton’s 48 race finishing streak between the 2018 British Grand Prix and the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix is the only longer streak than Ricciardo’s.
THE FORMULA 1 RECORDS TO BREAK
Sergio Perez’s victory at the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix made it the 11th consecutive race at Marina Bay Street Circuit in which a Red Bull driver finished on the podium. It puts them one short of the record for most consecutive races at a circuit in which a team has finished on the podium – and they could equal the record at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. Ferrari finished on the podium at Monza in all 12 races at the circuit between 1950 and 1961, while Mercedes have finished on the podium at Silverstone in all 12 races (including the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix) since 2013.
Fernando Alonso is 75km away from becoming the first Formula 1 driver to have covered 100,000km of Grand Prix racing laps in his career. Alonso will achieve the feat if he reaches Lap 16 of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix.
If Carlos Sainz or Fernando Alonso lead a lap of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, this will be the 100th F1 race in which a Spanish driver has led a lap.
If Lewis Hamilton wins the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, it would be the second time that he has won the Marina Bay race on September 17. He also won the 2017 Singapore Grand Prix on September 17. Unless Zhou Guanyu finishes in the top ten at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, he will equal the longest point-less streak of his Formula 1 career. He has failed to score at all of the last seven races.
If Charles Leclerc finishes first or second at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Monaco will become the 11th nation to have scored 1,000 points in Formula 1. The United States could beat Monaco to it, if Logan Sargeant picks up two points. A points finish for Sargeant would mark the first time in 30 years that an American driver has scored in Formula 1. American drivers have been stuck on 998 points since the 1993 Italian Grand Prix, when Michael Andretti scored the last points of his career with a podium finish for McLaren.
Could the United Kingdom’s 108-race scoring streak come to an end this weekend? Strangely, all of the top five scoring streaks for nations – except the current one – have come to an end at the race after the Italian Grand Prix.
Should he win the race, Charles Leclerc will become the 14th driver to have scored 1,000 points in his Formula 1 career.
At the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen joined Fernando Alonso as only the second driver to have won races from nine different grid positions. Either driver could become the first to win from ten different grid positions, while Lewis Hamilton could equal the existing record.
Pole position for Charles Leclerc would see him overtake Valtteri Bottas as the non-champion to have taken the most pole positions in Formula 1. The pair are currently tied on 20 poles apiece.
Having already won the Saudi Arabian and Singapore Grands Prix, one more victory for Sergio Perez in 2023 would make this the first season in which he has won three Grands Prix in a single year.
If Fernando Alonso wins any race this season, he will become the oldest driver to win a Grand Prix since Jack Brabham at the 1970 South African Grand Prix. Brabham won that race at the age of 43 years, 11 months and 5 days.
A fifth place finish for Fernando Alonso in the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix would see him equal Jenson Button for the most fifth place finishes in Formula 1. Button finished fifth on 27 occasions during his career.
A top ten finish for Nico Hulkenberg would make this the 100th race weekend at which he has scored points. That includes the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix, at which he only scored points in the Sprint.
A Q3 appearance for Nico Hulkenberg would see him become the 14th driver to record 100 Q3 appearances since the knockout qualifying system was introduced in 2006.
2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX: RECORDS TO BREAK
Victory for Lewis Hamilton at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix would see him equal Sebastian Vettel as the driver with the most wins at Marina Bay Street Circuit. Hamilton has taken four victories so far at the circuit.
Mercedes and Red Bull are currently tied for most victories at the Singapore Grand Prix, with four apiece. Either team could extend the record to five victories.
If a driver other than Lewis Hamilton or Sergio Perez win the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, this would be the first time that four different drivers have won four successive victories at Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Should a team other than Mercedes, Ferrari or Red Bull win the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, this would be the second time that four different teams have won four successive races at Marina Bay Street Circuit. It last happened between 2008 and 2011.
If Lewis Hamilton leads four laps of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, he’ll overtake Sebastian Vettel as the driver to have led the most laps at Marina Bay Street Circuit.
If three British drivers finish on the podium, Britain will equal Germany as the nation with the most podiums at the Singapore Grand Prix. Germany’s current record is 11 podium results at the circuit.
A victory for a Renault-powered car would see Renault equal Mercedes as the most successful engine manufacturer at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton or Kevin Magnussen could become the first driver to record three fastest laps at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Red Bull and Mercedes are currently tied as the teams with the most fastest laps at the Singapore Grand Prix, with three apiece. Ferrari or Haas could equal the existing record.
If he reaches Lap 35 of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton will overtake Sebastian Vettel as the driver to have raced the most laps at Marina Bay Street Circuit. Vettel raced 727 laps here during his career, while Hamilton has raced 693 laps so far.
A second place finish for Charles Leclerc would see him equal Daniel Ricciardo as the driver to have finished as runner-up at Marina Bay Circuit on the most occasions. Ricciardo finished as runner-up here three times.
Carlos Sainz holds the record for most Singapore Grand Prix appearances without DNF, having finished all six of his races at the track here to date. Another finish this weekend would see him extend his record of most starts at the track without a retirement to seven.
Nine drivers are currently tied for most retirements in Singapore, with three each. Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso or Nico Hulkenberg will become the first driver to record four non-finishes at the event if they retire from the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix.
Nico Hulkenberg, Max Verstappen or Esteban Ocon will become the first drivers to record multiple first lap retirements at the Singapore Grand Prix if they are out on Lap 1 of the 2023 race.
If Yuki Tsunoda or Zhou Guanyu retire from the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, they would become only the third driver – after Adrian Sutil and Mark Webber – to retire on both of their first two appearances at Marina Bay Circuit.
2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX: QUALIFYING RECORDS
Lewis Hamilton could become the first driver to take five Singapore Grand Prix pole positions this weekend. He’s currently tied with Sebastian Vettel for most poles at Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Pole position for Charles Leclerc would see him extend the record of most consecutive pole positions at the Singapore Grand Prix to three. He is the only driver to take successive poles at Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Pole for a Ferrari driver would see the Scuderia extend their record for most consecutive poles at Marina Bay Street Circuit to three.
Mercedes could equal Ferrari as the engine manufacturer to have taken the most poles at the Singapore Grand Prix. Mercedes-powered cars have taken five poles here, compared to Ferrari’s six.
If a British driver takes pole position at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Britain will equal Germany as the nation to have taken the most pole positions at Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Should he qualify on the front row at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton would set a new outright record for most front row starts at the venue. He’s currently tied on six front row starts here with Sebastian Vettel.
Six drivers currently share the record for most Q1 exits at the Singapore Grand Prix, with three each. Among the record holders are Lance Stroll and Kevin Magnussen, who could each set a new record at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix.
HAMILTON SEARCHES FOR FIRST VICTORY SINCE 2021
Victory for Lewis Hamilton would see car number 44 equal car number 2 as the car number to have taken the third most wins in Formula 1.
A victory for Lewis Hamilton at any race in 2023 would see him move into the top 20 of the oldest drivers to win a Grand Prix in Formula 1. He would overtake Damon Hill as the third-oldest British driver to have won a Grand Prix.
If Lewis Hamilton wins any race this year, he’ll overtake Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have had the longest gap between his first and last Grand Prix victories. He’d also be the first driver to have won after the 300th race of his career. Fernando Alonso would break the record if he were to take victory.
A victory for Lewis Hamilton would make him the first driver to have won in 16 different Formula 1 seasons. 2022 is the only season during his career in which Hamilton has not taken a victory.
WILL MERCEDES BE BACK IN THE FIGHT?
A victory for Mercedes would make 2023 the 12th consecutive season in which the team has won a race. They would be only the third team to win in 12 consecutive seasons, after Ferrari (1994-2013) and McLaren (1981-1993).
Victory for a Mercedes-powered car would see them become only the third engine manufacturer to have won in 17 consecutive Formula 1 seasons. The only other manufacturers to have done so are Ferrari (20 seasons, between 1994-2013) and Ford Cosworth (17 seasons, between 1967-1983).
If three Mercedes-powered cars finish on the podium, Mercedes will equal Renault’s record tally of seventeen podium lockouts for an engine manufacturer.
