Verstappen equals the second longest scoring streak, Perez records his first Monza podium in 11 years and Norris and Bottas extend their Monza records. Here’s a statistic from each driver’s 2023 Italian Grand Prix weekend!
🇳🇱 Max VERSTAPPEN
After qualifying on the front row for the ninth consecutive race, the 2023 Italian Grand Prix saw an historic occasion for Max Verstappe, who became the first driver in Formula 1 history to win ten consecutive races. It saw him break Sebastian Vettel’s decade-old record of nine successive wins.
He became the first driver since Hamilton, in 2017 and 2018, to take successive wins at Monza and the 20th to have won multiple Monza races in Formula 1’s history at the venue. Having led 33 laps of the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, Verstappen became the sixth driver to have led 2,500 laps in Formula 1 on his way to equalling the third longest podium streak and the second-longest points-scoring streak in Formula 1 history.
🇲🇽 Sergio PEREZ
Sergio Perez finished as runner-up in the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, recording his first podium finish at Monza since he was a Sauber driver back in 2012. This was Perez’s tenth consecutive points-scoring visit to the circuit.
🇲🇨 Charles LECLERC
For the second year in a row, Ferrari qualified first and third at Monza – though last year their drivers were reversed. Charles Leclerc started third and finished fourth, making this the fifth consecutive race in which he has finished in a worse position than where he started.
🇪🇸 Carlos SAINZ
Carlos Sainz became the fifth different driver to be fastest in qualifying at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix. He recorded the fourth pole position of his career, while this was the third time Sainz has been fastest in qualifying – after the 2022 British Grand Prix and the 2022 United States Grand Prix. Sainz secured pole for the 2023 Italian Grand Prix by 0.013 seconds, which is the smallest margin pole has been taken by at Monza since Kimi Raikkonen took pole by 0.002 seconds in 2006.
Sainz became the tenth driver to finish on the podium in 2023, finishing in third place. This was his first podium result since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix and his second podium finish at Monza, having finished as runner-up in the 2020 Italian Grand Prix. With Sainz finishing third, the 2023 Italian Grand Prix was the fourth consecutive Monza race which the polesitter failed to win.
🇬🇧 Lewis HAMILTON
Lewis Hamilton became the first driver to record 300 Q3 appearances in Formula 1 at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix. With eighth place in Q3, Hamilton recorded his worst Italian Grand Prix qualifying result since qualifying 12th in 2013. It also marked the Mercedes team’s worst Monza qualifying result since then.
With fifth place in the race, Hamilton scored points at Monza for the 14th time in his career. That saw him equal Michael Schumacher as the driver who has scored on the most occasions at the Italian Grand Prix.
🇬🇧 George RUSSELL
George Russell was fourth fastest in Q3 at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, recording his best Italian Grand Prix qualifying result to date. His previous best was sixth, recorded last year. He went on to finish the race sixth. With Lewis Hamilton fifth and Russell sixth, 2023 is only the second time since 2014 that neither Mercedes driver has finished on the Italian Grand Prix podium. It last happened in 2020.
🇫🇷 Esteban OCON
Esteban Ocon recorded his first Q1 exit at the Italian Grand Prix since his first appearance at the track in 2016. 18th is Ocon’s worst qualifying result of the season to date. He failed to reach Q3 for the sixth consecutive race, which is his longest streak without a Q3 appearance since he failed to qualify in the top ten on any of his first 12 Formula 1 appearances.
Of the 19 drivers who started the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, Ocon was the only one who failed to finish. Ocon recorded his fifth retirement of the 2023 season – and his third in the last five races. As a result, Ocon lost his 100% finishing record at Monza, having never failed to finish on any of his previous six F1 appearances at the track.
🇫🇷 Pierre GASLY
Pierre Gasly recorded his first ever Monza Q1 exit on Saturday at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix. With Gasly 15th and team-mate Esteban Ocon failing to finish, 2023 is the second consecutive season in which Alpine failed to score at the Italian Grand Prix.
🇬🇧 Lando NORRIS
Lando Norris qualified ninth for the 2023 Italian Grand Prix – his worst qualifying result at Monza since missing out on Q3 in 2019. Finishing the race eighth, Norris maintained his 100% points-scoring rate at the Italian Grand Prix. On his fifth appearance, he extended his record as the driver to have made the most appearances at Monza without failing to score. Norris scored points for the sixth consecutive race in 2023, with this being the first time he finished outside of the top seven since the Canadian Grand Prix.
🇦🇺 Oscar PIASTRI
Setting the seventh fastest time in Q3 at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri out-qualified his team-mate for the third time in his career. Piastri ultimately finished outside of the points and dropped to 12th in the final order thanks to a time penalty. However, Piastri did lead a lap of the race, making him the 180th driver to lead a (non-Sprint) lap in Formula 1 history.
🇫🇮 Valtteri BOTTAS
Valtteri Bottas set the 14th fastest time in Q2 at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix – his worst qualifying result at Monza since qualifying 18th in his maiden season. In the race, Bottas scored his first point since the Canadian Grand Prix with a tenth place finish. This was Bottas’ 11th appearance at the event without recording a retirement. He extended the record for most appearances at Monza without a DNF.
🇨🇳 ZHOU Guanyu
Zhou Guanyu qualified 16th for the second successive race, missing out on a Q2 appearance by another small margin. His best Q1 lap was just 0.047s slower than the cut-off time. At the Dutch Grand Prix, Zhou missed out on Q2 by just 0.031s.
🇪🇸 Fernando ALONSO
Becoming the first driver to start 20 Formula 1 races at Monza, on the tenth lap of the race, Alonso overtook Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have raced the most Grand Prix laps at the circuit. Lap 51 saw Alonso become the first driver in history to complete 20,000 Grand Prix laps. With ninth place, Alonso scored for the 14th race in a row but equalled his worst result of the season to date, having also finished ninth at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
🇨🇦 Lance STROLL
Setting the slowest qualifying lap time at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, Lance Stroll was eliminated in Q1 for the second successive year at Monza. Stroll’s previous worst qualifying effort at Monza was 18th, in 2022. Stroll recorded his team’s worst qualifying result at Monza since 2014, when Nico Hulkenberg failed to set a lap time with Force India.
Stroll finished 16th in the 2023 Italian Grand Prix – his worst result in a race he has finished since finishing 20th at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix; and his worst finish at an event where racing took place since finishing 17th at the 2019 Hungarian Grand Prix.
🇩🇰 Kevin MAGNUSSEN
Qualifying 19th, Kevin Magnussen recorded his fourth Q1 exit at the Italian Grand Prix. He equalled the record for most Q1 eliminations at Monza. Marcus Ericsson, Romain Grosjean, Timo Glock and Vitantonio Liuzzi were also eliminated in Q1 four times here. Magnussen qualified 19th at Monza for the second year in a row.
🇩🇪 Nico HULKENBERG
Qualifying 13th, Nico Hulkenberg recorded the Haas team’s best Italian Grand Prix qualifying result since Kevin Magnussen qualified 12th in 2019. With Hulkenberg 17th and Kevin Magnussen 18th in the race, this was the first time in the Haas team’s history that neither Haas driver has finished in the top 16 at the Italian Grand Prix.
🇯🇵 Yuki TSUNODA
Yuki Tsunoda failed to start the 2023 Italian Grand Prix after coming to a stop on the formation lap. 2023 is the third consecutive season in which Tsunoda has recorded a DNS and this was the second time that he recorded a DNS at Monza. Tsunoda is the first driver to record multiple DNSs at Monza in Formula 1.
There were three formation laps as a result of Tsunoda’s stoppage. The last race to have three formation laps was the 2003 Austrian Grand Prix, when a faulty launch control on Cristiano da Matta’s Toyota meant that the drivers toured the circuit three times before the race began.
🇳🇿 Liam LAWSON
Liam Lawson reached Q2 for the first time in his Formula 1 career and 11th on his second Formula 1 outing. The result saw him move ahead of both Nyck de Vries and Daniel Ricciardo in the Drivers’ Championship.
🇹🇭 Alex ALBON
With sixth place in qualifying, Alex Albon maintained his 100% Q3 appearance record at the Italian Grand Prix. Oscar Piastri joined him in the club. Sebastien Bourdais is the only other driver to have reached Q3 on every appearance at Monza. Albon recorded Williams’ first Q3 appearance at the Italian Grand Prix since 2018. Albon qualified in the top six at consecutive races for the first time since the 2020 Turkish and Bahrain Grands Prix.
Albon finished the 2023 Italian Grand Prix in seventh place, finishing in the top eight for a second consecutive race. This was the first time that Albon has finished in the top eight at successive events since his last races with Red Bull in 2020. Albon recorded Williams’ best result at the Italian Grand Prix since Lance Stroll also finished seventh in 2017 and became the first Williams driver to finish in the top eight at consecutive races since George Russell did so at the 2021 Hungarian and Belgian Grands Prix.
🇺🇸 Logan SARGEANT
With Logan Sargeant failing to pick up a point at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, America will pass the 30th anniversary of the last time one of their drivers scored a point before the next race. Michael Andretti was the last American to score a point in F1, doing so at the Italian Grand Prix on September 12, 1993.
