RACE BY RACE: CARLOS SAINZ‘S 2023 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2023 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz made his tenth appearance at Bahrain International Circuit. Having failed to score on any of his first five appearances, he has now scored on all of his last five appearances at the track. His fourth place in the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix equals his second-best result at the venue.

2023 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz qualified in fifth place for the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Max Verstappen’s Q2 exit means that Sainz took over the longest active streak of consecutive Q3 appearances. He has reached Q3 at all 25 races since the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Of the drivers who’ve appeared in all three race weekends at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Sainz is the only driver to be out-qualified by his team-mate all three times.

2023 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

With fifth place on Saturday, Carlos Sainz recorded his best Australian Grand Prix qualifying result to date. On Sunday, Sainz picked up a 5-second time penalty ahead of the final restart, dropping him from fourth at the finish line to 12th in the final order. This was the first time Sainz has failed to score in a race which he has finished since the 2021 French Grand Prix. Sainz was the only driver who finished the 2023 Australian Grand Prix in a worse position than where he started.

2023 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

For the seventh time in seven visits to Baku City Circuit, Carlos Sainz failed to out-qualify his team-mate at the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Sainz also failed to out-qualify Charles Leclerc in the Sprint Shootout.

2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz recorded his first top three qualifying result of the 2023 season at the Miami Grand Prix. This was the first time Sainz qualified in the top three since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Sainz finished the race in fifth place, recording his first consecutive top five results of the 2023 season.

2023 MONACO GRAND PRIX

On the weekend where he became the 16th driver to make 50 race starts with Ferrari, Carlos Sainz maintained his 100% points-scoring rate at the Monaco Grand Prix. This was the first time he finished outside of the top six in Monaco since 2018. Finishing eighth for the 20th time in his career, Sainz equalled Jenson Button as the driver who has recorded the most eighth place finishes in Formula 1.

Qualifying fifth on Saturday, Sainz remains the only driver to qualify in the top five at every race in 2023 as well as the only current driver with a 100% Q3 appearance rate at the Monaco Grand Prix.

2023 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz recorded his first front row qualification of the season at the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix, making him the second Spanish driver to record a front row start at his home Grand Prix. Sainz lost three positions from his front row start to finish fifth. It was the sixth consecutive race in which he finished in a worse position than where he started.

2023 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Qualifying eighth, the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix is the first race of the year at which Carlos Sainz qualified outside of the top five. He remains the only driver to qualify in the top eight at every race in 2023, though he drops to 11th on the grid following a 3-place grid penalty for impeding. Fernando Alonso is the only other driver to reach Q3 at all eight races in the 2023 season.

After qualifying outside of the top five for the first time in the 2023 season, Carlos Sainz finished fifth in the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix. This was the fourth time in the last five races that Sainz finished fifth.

2023 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

Started third at the Austrian Grand Prix for the second year in a row, Carlos Sainz finished in the top four on the road for the first time since the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. However, a post race penalty dropped him to sixth in the final order. It was his first finish outside of the top five since the Monaco Grand Prix.

2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Picking up a single point for his 10th place finish, Carlos Sainz recorded his second-worst result of the 2023 season to date at the British Grand Prix. He finished 12th at the Australian Grand Prix following a post race time penalty.

2023 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Qualifying 11th for the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz missed out on a spot in Q3 for the first time in 2023. Sainz’s Q2 exit ended a 33-race streak of Q3 appearances, having last failed to qualify in the top ten at the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Sainz finished the race eighth – his worst Hungarian Grand Prix result since finishing ninth in 2020.

2023 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz retired from the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix as a result of damage sustained in a first corner incident. He recorded his first retirement of the 2023 season; his first DNF since the 2022 United States Grand Prix. The 2023 Belgian Grand Prix was the fifth time that Sainz has failed to finish at Spa-Francorchamps. Sainz recorded Ferrari’s first retirement at the Belgian Grand Prix since Kimi Raikkonen failed to finish in 2018.

2023 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

After out-qualifying his team-mate for the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz finished fifth having started sixth at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix. This was the first time Sainz gained a position from where he has started at Zandvoort and marked his best result to date at the track.

2023 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz became the fifth different driver to be fastest in qualifying at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix. He recorded the fourth pole position of his career, while this was the third time Sainz has been fastest in qualifying – after the 2022 British Grand Prix and the 2022 United States Grand Prix. Sainz secured pole for the 2023 Italian Grand Prix by 0.013 seconds, which is the smallest margin pole has been taken by at Monza since Kimi Raikkonen took pole by 0.002 seconds in 2006.

Sainz became the tenth driver to finish on the podium in 2023, finishing in third place. This was his first podium result since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix and his second podium finish at Monza, having finished as runner-up in the 2020 Italian Grand Prix. With Sainz finishing third, the 2023 Italian Grand Prix was the fourth consecutive Monza race which the polesitter failed to win.

2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz took pole position for the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. Having also taken pole last time out at the Italian Grand Prix, Sainz secured consecutive pole positions for the first time in his career. In total, this was the fifth pole of Sainz’s career. This was the first time Sainz qualified in the top three at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Red Bull’s 15-race winning streak finally came to an end at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, with Carlos Sainz securing the second victory of his Formula 1 career. Sainz is the 77th driver to have taken multiple Grand Prix wins in World Championship history. Sainz took victory by 0.812 seconds, marking the third time that the Singapore Grand Prix has been won by under a second.

Sainz led every lap of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix – the first time he has led every lap of a race in his Formula 1 career. He is the 59th driver to have led every lap of a Grand Prix. Sainz made this the 100th Grand Prix in which a Spanish driver led a lap.

Sainz was the only driver who finished the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix in the same position as he started. It was the first time that Sainz has finished a Singapore race in the same place as he started. Sainz recorded consecutive podium finishes for the first time since the 2022 Canadian and British Grands Prix.

Sainz has now made seven appearances at the Singapore Grand Prix without ever failing to finish, extending the record for most appearances at the track without a DNF.

2023 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz qualified and finished sixth at the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix. He was out-qualified and out-raced at Suzuka by his team-mate for a second year in succession.

2023 QATAR GRAND PRIX

For only the second time in 2023, Carlos Sainz failed to qualify in the top ten at the Qatar Grand Prix. 12th place marked the Spaniard’s worst qualifying result since he qualified 15th at the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Sainz failed to start the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix due to a fuel leak. This marked the second DNS of Sainz’s career, with him last failing to start with McLaren at the 2020 Belgian Grand Prix.

2023 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

Although he was not promoted into the top three until after the race, Carlos Sainz recorded the 18th podium finish of his career at the 2023 United States Grand Prix, finishing in the top three for the third time in the last five races. Sainz became the first driver to record a podium finish from fourth on the grid at Circuit of The Americas.

2023 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz had qualified one position better than where he had on his previous appearance every time he had raced at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. That streak came to an end at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, where Sainz qualified second – three positions better than in the previous season. Losing two positions from where he started to finish fourth, Sainz maintained his record of having never gained a place during the Mexico City Grand Prix.

2023 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

Finishing sixth in the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz recorded a fourth consecutive top six result at Interlagos. He was out-qualified by his team-mate at the track for the first time since 2019 – and for the first time without mechanical issues in qualifying since 2018.

2023 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz recorded his fifth front row qualification of the 2023 season, though he started 12th due to a grid penalty after hitting a drain cover in the opening minutes of Free Practice 1. He made up six positions in the race to finish in sixth place.

2023 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz failed to secure a spot in Q2 at the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, recording his first Q1 exit since the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix – the race at which he secured his maiden podium finish with McLaren. Sainz became the third Ferrari driver to record a Q1 exit at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, after Giancarlo Fisichella in 2009 and Sebastian Vettel in 2015. This was Sainz’s second Q1 exit at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – his first since 2016.

All 20 drivers were classified in the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix but not all finished, as Sainz pulled into the pit lane at the end of the penultimate lap. He was classified 18th in the final order. It was his third non-finish of the year. Sainz is only the second Ferrari driver, after Kimi Raikkonen in 2018, to record a non-finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Sainz equalled Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton as the driver with the most retirements at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, this being his third DNF at the event.
