Verstappen closes the points deficit to 40 points, Tsunoda records his best COTA result to date and Hamilton takes an unwanted Ferrari record. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2025 United States Grand Prix!
VERSTAPPEN WINS THE 2025 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX
Max Verstappen’s dominant weekend at the 2025 United States Grand Prix saw him close the championship points gap to leader Oscar Piastri to just 40 points. This was Verstappen’s 68th win in total and his fifth victory of the season.
Verstappen’s victory made him the first driver to have won as many as seven Grands Prix in the United States. It equals Italy as the country in which Verstappen has taken the most wins.
This was Verstappen’s fourth victory at Circuit of The Americas in the last four years. He becomes only the second driver, after Lewis Hamilton, to have taken as many as four wins in Austin.
Verstappen finished on the podium for the 122nd time in his career. That saw him equal Sebastian Vettel for third place on the list of most top three finishes in Formula 1.
Red Bull took their first victory at COTA, equalling Mercedes at the top of the list of most wins for a team at the track. Verstappen’s podium finish also saw Red Bull become the first team to record 13 podium finishes in Texas, overtaking Mercedes at the top of the list.
This was Verstappen’s fifth consecutive podium finish – his longest streak of top three finishes since winning nine races in a row between the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix and the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
This was the first time since 2021 that the polesitter won the United States Grand Prix, as well as the first time since 2019 that the driver who started from pole position led at the end of Lap 1 at COTA.
Verstappen became the first driver to lead every lap of a Grand Prix at COTA in its history on the calendar.
ON THE PODIUM
Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc joined Max Verstappen on the podium at the 2025 United States Grand Prix.
This was the fourth race of the year – after the Japanese, Monaco and Italian Grands Prix – in which the top three finished in the same order as they started.
Norris equalled Felipe Massa for 24th on the all-time list of most podium finishes, this being his 41st top three result.
Norris maintained his 100% points-scoring record at the United States Grand Prix. He became only the fourth driver – after Carlos Sainz, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel – to score points on all of his first six appearances at the track.
This was Norris’ second podium finish at COTA, having also finished as runner-up in the 2023 race.
Leclerc finished on the podium for the 49th time in his career, overtaking Gerhard Berger for 18th on the all-time list of most podiums in F1.
Leclerc recorded Ferrari’s first podium finish since he finished third in the Hungarian Grand Prix. All of Leclerc’s last four podium finishes have been third place results.
This was Leclerc’s third podium finish at COTA in the last four years. 2025 is the fourth year in a row in at least one Ferrari driver has finished on the United States Grand Prix podium.
IN THE POINTS
Finishing in fourth place at the 2025 United States Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton equalled his best result of the season. This was the fourth time that he finished fourth this year, after the Emilia Romagna, Austrian and British Grands Prix.
With his points scored over the 2025 United States Grand Prix weekend, Hamilton became the first driver in F1 history to score as many as 5,000 World Championship points.
Hamilton moved clear of Sergio Perez at the top of the list of most points-scoring appearances at COTA. This was his 11th points finish at the venue.
Having recorded a disqualification and a first lap retirement in the last two seasons, this was Hamilton’s first finish at the United States Grand Prix since 2022. Of the 11 races he has finished at the track, he has always finished in the top four.
Making his 19th start with Ferrari, Hamilton became the first driver to make as many as 19 Grand Prix appearances with the Scuderia without finishing in the top three. He took the unwanted record from Didier Pironi, who recorded his first podium with the team on his 18th attempt at the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix.
With fifth place, Oscar Piastri finished off the podium at three consecutive races for the first time since failing to record a podium finish in all four races between the 2024 United States and Las Vegas Grands Prix.
Along with Lando Norris, George Russell became the first driver to cross the finish line without retiring on all of their first six appearances at COTA. They overtook Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg at the top of the list.
Finishing sixth, Russell scored points for an 11th consecutive race weekend – the longest active streak of any driver.
Yuki Tsunoda finished seventh at the 2025 United States Grand Prix. It was his second-best result of the season, behind his sixth place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix two races ago.
Tsunoda made up six positions in the 2025 United States Grand Prix. It was the second day in a row that Tsunoda gained places, having made up 11 positions in the Sprint. His rise of 11 positions has been bettered in a Sprint only twice: by Lewis Hamilton in Sao Paulo in 2021, when he gained 15 places, and by Tsunoda himself in Miami earlier this year, when he gained 14 positions.
This was Tsunoda’s best result to date at COTA – and the fourth time that he has scored points from his five visits to the track.
For the first time since his podium finish at the British Grand Prix, Nico Hulkenberg finished in the points. His eighth place finish ended a run of six point-less appearances.
This was the second year in a row that Hulkenberg finished eighth at COTA.
Hulkenberg scored the Sauber team’s first points at the United States Grand Prix since 2018, and recorded the team’s best result at COTA since he himself finished sixth in 2013.
Ollie Bearman finished ninth in the 2025 United States Grand Prix, scoring at consecutive races for the first time since the Japanese and Bahrain Grands Prix.
Fernando Alonso finished tenth, scoring points at consecutive races for the first time since the Hungarian and Dutch Grands Prix.
Alonso’s points made this the ninth time in the last ten COTA races that the Silverstone-based team has scored.
THE OTHER FINISHERS
Kimi Antonelli finished 13th at the 2025 United States Grand Prix, finishing outside of the points for the first time in three races, ending what was the equal-longest points-scoring streak of his career to date.
Antonelli recorded the fastest lap of the race, extending Mercedes’ record for the most fastest laps at the track to five.
Lance Stroll made his 184th start at the 2025 United States Grand Prix. Failing to win the race, Stroll overtook Nick Heidfeld for fourth place on the list of most F1 starts without a win.
For the sixth Grand Prix in a row, neither Alpine driver finished in the points. In the last six Grands Prix, Franco Colapinto’s 11th place finish at Zandvoort is the only time an Alpine driver has finished in the top 15.
With both Racing Bulls drivers finishing outside of the points, this was only the second time in the last 11 races in COTA that the Red Bull junior team left the track having not scored.
SAINZ IS THE ONLY RETIREE
Carlos Sainz was the only driver who failed to finish the 2025 United States Grand Prix. This was his fourth non-finish of the season, including his non-start in Austria.
This was Williams’ fourth retirement at COTA – their first since 2019.
