2025 Qatar Grand Prix: Race Statistics, Facts and Trivia

Verstappen records his 70th victory, Sainz is the first Williams driver to record multiple podiums in a season since 2015 and Mercedes finish with both cars in the points in Qatar for the first time. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix!

VERSTAPPEN WINS THE 2025 QATAR GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen claimed the 70th victory of his Formula 1 career at the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix. He is the third driver to record as many as 70 wins, after Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton – both of whom reached the milestone during a title-winning season.

Verstappen’s win means that he remains in the title hunt ahead of the final race of the season. The 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the first time that more than two drivers have a chance of winning the title at the last race of the season since 2010.

Verstappen extended the record for most victories at Lusail International Circuit to three, while Red Bull also extended the record for most team wins at the circuit.

This was Verstappen’s 34th win having started from a position other than pole. He overtook Alain Prost for third place on the list of most victories from a starting position other than pole.

Winning from third on the grid, this was the first time that a win came from outside of the front row of the grid at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Verstappen secured consecutive wins for the first time since the Italian and Azerbaijan Grands Prix.

This was Verstappen’s 50th victory in car number 1. He is two wins away from equalling Michael Schumacher as the driver with the most wins in car number 1.

Verstappen, Norris and Piastri head into the final race tied on seven wins apiece across the season.

Verstappen was voted Driver Of The Day for the third race in a row, equalling the record for the most successive wins in the vote.

This was the first time that a single driver did not lead every lap of the Qatar Grand Prix.

Prior to the Mexico City Grand Prix, Verstappen had not gained more than one position in any of the previous 22 races. He has now gained two or more positions in three of the last four Grands Prix.

ON THE PODIUM

Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz joined Max Verstappen on the podium at the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix.

Verstappen became the first driver to record four podium finishes in Qatar, while Piastri became the second driver to record three top three finishes here.

Red Bull and McLaren continue to be tied as the team with the most podium finishes at the Qatar Grand Prix, these being their fourth podium finishes at the track. Williams became the sixth different team to finish on the Qatar Grand Prix podium since its debut in 2021.

Piastri ended a six-race podium drought, finishing in the top three for the first time since his third place finish at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix.

Sainz became the first Williams driver to record multiple podium finishes in a single season since both Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas did so in 2015.

Sainz’s podium finish marked the first time that a Williams driver finished in the top 12 positions at the Qatar Grand Prix. It was Sainz’s first top five finish at the event.

This was the first time Sainz recorded top five finishes at two races in a row since the 2024 United States and Mexico City Grands Prix.

Sainz started seventh, making this the second time that the driver starting second has finished on the podium at the Qatar Grand Prix. It is only the third grid position – after pole and third – to record multiple podium finishes.

IN THE POINTS

Having being disqualified in Las Vegas and finishing fourth in the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, this is the first time Lando Norris failed to finish on the podium at two successive races since last year’s Las Vegas and Qatar Grands Prix.

Along with Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Fernando Alonso continued their records as the only drivers to complete every lap of every Qatar Grand Prix to date. Meanwhile, those three drivers and Lando Norris maintained their record of scoring in every Lusail race to date.

With sixth place, George Russell continued his 15-race scoring streak. Of those 15 races, the British and Mexico City Grands Prix are the only times he has finished outside of the top six.

Russell has lost at least two positions in every Qatar Grand Prix appearance to date.

Kimi Antonelli finished fifth, recording a top six finish for the fourth successive race weekend. This is now the longest top six finishing streak in his career.

This was the first Qatar Grand Prix in which both Mercedes drivers scored points.

Fernando Alonso finished seventh in the Qatar Grand Prix for the second year in a row. He remains yet to finish outside of the top seven at the track.

Charles Leclerc finished eighth at the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, equalling his worst result to date at the Lusail track.

With ninth place, Liam Lawson scored points for the second time in the last three race weekends.

This was the first time Lawson scored points, or finished in the top 13, in his three appearances to date at the Qatar Grand Prix.

Lawson became the first driver for the Red Bull junior team to score points in the Qatar Grand Prix.

Finishing tenth in the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, Yuki Tsunoda scored a point in a Grand Prix for the first time since the United States Grand Prix. This is the fourth time he has finished in the points in the last 16 race weekends.

This was the first time Tsunoda scored a point in his four appearances at the Qatar Grand Prix.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

Alex Albon finished 11th at the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix. With team-mate Carlos Sainz finishing on the podium, this was the first Qatar Grand Prix in which both Williams drivers crossed the finish line.

Finishing 12th in the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, this was the first time Lewis Hamilton finished a race without scoring points since the Hungarian Grand Prix, where he also finished 12th.

This was the second year in a row that Hamilton finished 12th in the Qatar Grand Prix. His win in 2021 remains the only time he has scored points at Lusail International Circuit.

Gabriel Bortoleto finished 13th, ending a streak of two successive retirements.

With Pierre Gasly finishing 14th and Franco Colapinto 16th, this was the first Qatar Grand Prix in which Alpine failed to score a point.

Colapinto gained six positions from a pit lane start to finish 14th in the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix. It equals the most positions he has ever gained in a Grand Prix, having previously done so in the 2024 Italian and Las Vegas Grands Prix.

THE RETIREES

Nico Hulkenberg became the first driver to record multiple retirements at the Qatar Grand Prix, as well as the first to record successive retirements at the event having also failed to finish last year. Lance Stroll joined him in the group later in the race.

Stroll retired on the penultimate lap of the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, retiring for the second race weekend in a row. This was the first time he failed to finish at successive races since the 2023 Singapore and Japanese Grands Prix.

With Fernando Alonso finishing seventh and Lance Stroll retiring, Aston Martin recorded the exact same result at the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix as they did in 2024.

A retirement for Ollie Bearman ended a five-race scoring streak for the British driver.

Isack Hadjar retired from the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix following a late-race puncture. This was the first time he failed to finish since the British Grand Prix.
