2024 Canadian Grand Prix: Milestones and F1 Records Which Could Be Broken

As Hamilton becomes the British driver with the longest Formula 1 career, Alonso could set a new record for the longest points-scoring period in F1 and Leclerc could equal Massa in the all-time Ferrari podium list. Here are the milestones and the records which could be broken at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix!

THE 2024 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX MILESTONES

The 2024 Canadian Grand Prix will be the 1,110th World Championship event in Formula 1 history.

This will be the 53rd time that Formula 1 has raced in Canada. It will be the 59th Canadian Grand Prix since the event was first held in 1961 and the 53rd time that the event has been held as a round of the World Championship.

This will be the 43rd time that the Canadian Grand Prix has been held at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Race day at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix marks 17 years, 2 months and 22 days since Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 debut at the 2007 Australian Grand Prix. Sunday’s race will therefore make Hamilton the British driver with the longest Formula 1 career, overtaking Jenson Button’s career length of 17 years, 2 months and 16 days. Hamilton will also move to fifth on the overall list of longest Formula 1 careers.

Fernando Alonso makes his 19th appearance at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve this weekend. It’ll be a new record for the most appearances at the track, with Alonso moving clear of Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher at the top of the list.

The 2024 Canadian Grand Prix marks the seventh Formula 1 race to take place on June 9. It is the first race to do so since the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix. It’s the fourth time that the Canadian Grand Prix will take place on this date.

Max Verstappen will continue to lead the Drivers’ Championship after the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, which will see him overtake Sebastian Vettel for fourth on the list of most races after which a driver has led the title race.

THE FORMULA 1 RECORDS WHICH COULD BE BROKEN

Victory for Lewis Hamilton at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix would see him equal the record for most F1 wins at a single circuit. Hamilton has won at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on seven occasions in the past. The record for most wins at a single track is eight, first set by Michael Schumacher at Magny Cours and later equalled by Hamilton at both the Hungaroring and Silverstone.

If Fernando Alonso scores a point at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, he will overtake Michael Schumacher’s record for the longest amount of time between first and last points-scoring appearances in Formula 1. Schumacher’s record is 21 years, 2 months and 17 days between his first points at the 1991 Italian Grand Prix and his last at the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix. If Alonso scores on race day in Canada, it will mark two weeks longer since his first points-scoring race at the 2003 Australian Grand Prix.

A victory for Max Verstappen at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix would mark his 60th Grand Prix win. He’d be the third driver to record 60 victories, after Michael Schumacher at the 2002 British Grand Prix and Lewis Hamilton at the 2017 Singapore Grand Prix.

If Red Bull fail to win the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, it would be the first time that the team has failed to win two consecutive races since the 2022 British and Austrian Grands Prix.

A Q1 elimination for Kevin Magnussen at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix would see him overtake Marcus Ericsson at the top of the list of most Q1 exits since the elimination qualifying format was introduced in 2006.

If both Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu are eliminated in Q1, the Sauber team will reach 250 Q1 exits since the knockout system was first introduced.

If Lance Stroll were to win the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, he would become the first driver to take his maiden Grand Prix victory at his home event since Johnny Herbert at the 1995 British Grand Prix.

At the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen joined Fernando Alonso as only the second driver to have won races from nine different grid positions. Either driver could become the first to win from ten different grid positions, while Lewis Hamilton could equal the existing record.

If Max Verstappen leads every lap of the race, he will overtake Jim Clark for fourth in the list of most races led from start to end. It would be the 14th time he has done so in his career.

A runner-up finish for Max Verstappen would see him record his 30th second place finish in Formula 1. He would move ahead of both Rubens Barrichello and Valtteri Bottas to seventh on the list of most runner-up finishes in F1.

If both Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen are eliminated in Q1 at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, Haas will reach 150 Q1 exits since joining Formula 1 at the start of 2016.

A 1-2 finish for Mercedes would make them the second team, after Ferrari, to record 60 1-2 finishes in Formula 1. Ferrari reached the milestone at the 2002 United States Grand Prix.

A points finish for Logan Sargeant would make the United States the 12th country to score 1,000 points in World Championship history.

If Charles Leclerc takes pole position and fails to win, it would be the 20th time that he has done so in his Formula 1 career. That would see him overtake Nelson Piquet for fifth in the list of most failed pole to win conversions.

A pole position for Charles Leclerc would mark the 50th pole position for car number 16 in Formula 1.

A top three finish for Charles Leclerc would be his 36th podium finish with Ferrari. That would see him equal Felipe Massa for sixth on the list of most podium finishes with the team in Formula 1.

THE CANADIAN GRAND PRIX RECORDS TO BREAK

Lewis Hamilton is currently tied with Michael Schumacher for most victories at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. A win at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix would see Hamilton set a new outright record of eight wins at the track.

Victory for Max Verstappen in the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix would make him the fourth driver – after Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Nelson Piquet – to record three victories at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

If Max Verstappen wins the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, he would become the third driver – after Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton – to have taken three successive wins at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

McLaren hold the record for most Canadian Grand Prix victories, with 13. Their record could be equalled by Ferrari at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix.

Ferrari are currently the most successful engine manufacturer at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with 11 wins. A win for a Mercedes-powered car at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix would see Mercedes equal Ferrari power at the top of the list. Meanwhile, Ferrari are tied with Ford Cosworth as the engine manufacturer with the most overall Canadian Grand Prix victories and could set a new record of 13 wins this weekend.

If Fernando Alonso completes 46 laps of the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, he will surpass Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have raced the second-most laps at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Charles Leclerc and Esteban Ocon currently hold 100% points-finishing records at the Canadian Grand Prix. They’re tied with Gilles Villeneuve for the most appearances at the track without ever recording a non-points finish. Either driver could set a new record at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix.

German and British drivers are currently tied for most wins at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve with ten wins apiece. A win for either nation this weekend would see them set a new outright record. British drivers have one more podium finish at the track than German drivers, meaning their record number of top three finishes could be equalled at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix.

A third place finish for Lewis Hamilton at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix would see him set a new record of most third place finishes in Montreal. He’s currently tied on three third places with Jean Alesi and Eddie Irvine.

2024 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX: QUALIFYING RECORDS

A pole position for Lewis Hamilton at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix would see him set a new record for most pole positions at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Hamilton is currently tied with Michael Schumacher for most poles at the track, with six.

Pole position for Max Verstappen at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix would see him equal the record for the most consecutive poles at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. It would be the fifth time that a driver has taken three successive poles at the track and Verstappen would be the fourth driver to do so, after Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.

Williams, McLaren and Ferrari are all tied for most poles at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with eight each. A pole for any of the three teams would see them set a new outright record.

Renault are the most successful engine manufacturer in qualifying at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with nine poles. Mercedes or Ferrari could equal their record of nine poles at the track at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton, Oscar Piastri and Esteban Ocon will all be hoping to maintain their 100% Q3 appearance records at the Canadian Grand Prix. Juan Pablo Montoya, Mick Schumacher and Nico Rosberg are the only other drivers who’ve reached Q3 on every appearance in Montreal.

Lance Stroll currently shares the record for most Q1 exits at the Canadian Grand Prix, with five. He could set a new outright record in qualifying for the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, or his current shared record could be equalled by Pierre Gasly. Marcus Ericsson and Heikki Kovalainen are the other drivers with four Q1 exits at the track.

LONGEVITY RECORDS FOR HAMILTON AND ALONSO

A victory for Lewis Hamilton at any race in 2024 would see him overtake Michael Schumacher as the driver to have won at least one race in the most Formula 1 seasons. Both Schumacher and Hamilton have won races in 15 different Formula 1 seasons.

A podium finish for Lewis Hamilton at any race in 2024 would make him the third oldest British driver to finish on the Formula 1 podium. He currently sits fourth in the list, behind Nigel Mansell, Graham Hill and Reg Parnell.

A podium finish for Fernando Alonso would make him the third driver – after Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton – to record podium finishes in 15 different Formula 1 seasons.

If Fernando Alonso leads a lap of any race in 2024, he would become the first driver to have led Formula 1 races over a period longer than 20 years. Alonso first led a Grand Prix in Malaysia in 2003. He most recently led at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, just a week short of the 20th anniversary of him leading a lap for the first time in Formula 1.
