Who has the most F1 wins with a single team?

Lewis Hamilton currently sits top of the list of drivers who’ve taken the most F1 wins with a single team. We take a look at the other drivers who’ve had long and successful partnerships with a single constructor.

82 – Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton is top of the list of most F1 wins with a single team, having taken 82 wins so far with Mercedes. His first victory with the team came at the 2013 Hungarian Grand Prix.

While that would be his only win that year, Mercedes proved to be the dominant force in Formula 1 at the dawn of the V6 hybrid era in 2014. Hamilton has since won 82 races in total with Mercedes in the most successful partnership in Formula 1 history. Hamilton also holds the record for most podiums with a single team and, in 2022, became the first driver to make 200 starts with a single constructor.

Hamilton became the record holder for most F1 wins with a single team at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, when he won his 73rd race with Mercedes, usurping Michael Schumacher from the top spot. This was also the race in which Hamilton equalled Schumacher’s record of seven World Championship titles.

As well as holding the record for the most F1 wins with a single team, Hamilton is the only driver to have taken more than 20 Grand Prix victories with two teams. He also took 21 wins with McLaren between 2007 and 2012.

72 – Michael Schumacher at Ferrari

There are few more iconic driver and team partnerships than Michael Schumacher and Ferrari who dominated Formula 1 at the start of the new millennium. In total, Schumacher took 72 wins with the Scuderia. His first victory with the team came at the 1996 Spanish Grand Prix, memorable for being held in damp conditions in which Schumacher utterly outclassed the rest of the field.

Schumacher would win five consecutive titles with the team between 2000 and 2004. He recorded his final win in Ferrari red at the 2006 Chinese Grand Prix. He’d set a new record for most F1 wins with a single team four years previously, at the 2002 Brazilian Grand Prix. That was his 36th win with the team, eclipsing Ayrton Senna’s former record tally of wins with McLaren.

Schumacher held the record for most F1 wins with a single team for 18 years, until it was broken by Lewis Hamilton, who claimed his 73rd win with Mercedes at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix.

54 – Max Verstappen at Red Bull

At the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, Max Verstappen recorded his 39th win with Red Bull and overtook Sebastian Vettel’s tally of wins with the team. It puts him third in the list of most F1 wins with a single team.

Now that he has overtaken Vettel, Verstappen needs to add quite a few more wins to his tally in order to surpass Michael Schumacher’s number of wins with Ferrari, or even Lewis Hamilton’s number of wins with Mercedes.

However, given that Verstappen has signed a contract with Red Bull which does not expire until the end of the 2028 season, the Dutchman has plenty of time to climb further up the list.

38 – Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull

Having taken his first career victory with the Red Bull junior team Toro Rosso at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel stepped up to Red Bull in 2009 and took the team’s first victory in Formula 1 at the 2009 Chinese Grand Prix.

37 more wins followed over the next five seasons, during which time Vettel won four World Championships in consecutive years between 2010 and 2013. His final nine wins with the team came at the final nine races of the 2013 season – a record for the longest consecutive winning streak in Formula 1 history.

35 – Ayrton Senna at McLaren

Ayrton Senna won 35 races during his tenure at McLaren. The Brazilian won with two teams during his time in Formula 1, the other being Lotus, with whom he took his first six victories.

Senna moved to McLaren in 1988 and soon recorded his first victory with the team at the 1988 San Marino Grand Prix. He would go on to be crowned World Champion with the team three times over the next four seasons.

More wins – but no titles – would come in 1992 and 1993, with Senna recording what was to be his final victory in his last race with McLaren at the 1993 Australian Grand Prix.

Senna set a new record for most F1 wins with a single team at the 1993 Brazilian Grand Prix, when he recorded his 31st victory with McLaren – one more than former team-mate Alain Prost had managed with the team. Senna’s record would stand for nine years, until the 2002 Brazilian Grand Prix, at which Michael Schumacher recorded his 36th victory with Ferrari.
