2023 Mexico City Grand Prix: Post Race Statistics

Verstappen equals Prost for fourth in the all-time win list, Hamilton records Britain’s 750th podium and Perez becomes the 11th driver to record a first lap retirement in Mexico. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix!

VERSTAPPEN WINS THE 2023 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen recorded the 51st victory of his Formula 1 career at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, equalling Alain Prost for fourth place in the all-time win list. During the race, Verstappen also passed Prost for fourth place in the list of most laps led in Formula 1.

Verstappen recorded his 16th win of the 2023 Formula 1 season, setting a new record for the most victories in a single season.

This was Verstappen’s fifth win in Mexico, extending the record for most wins in the country. After becoming the first driver to win two Mexico races in a row last year, the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix saw him become the first driver to take three consecutive wins in the country.

Verstappen secured Red Bull’s 110th victory in Formula 1. This was the team’s fifth victory at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, extending their record for most victories at the track. They also became the first team to win three Mexican races in a row.

During the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, Max Verstappen became the first driver to have led 300 laps at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. No other driver has led more than 200 laps here.

Having previously won the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix on October 29, Max Verstappen became the 14th driver to have won the same race on the same date twice. It’s the 22nd time that a driver has achieved this feat in Formula 1.

The is the third time in the last four times it has been run that the Mexico City Grand Prix has been won from third on the grid.

ON THE PODIUM

For the third year in a row, Lewis Hamilton finished as runner-up to Max Verstappen in the Mexico City Grand Prix. Hamilton extended the record for most podiums in Mexico to six.

This was Hamilton’s third runner-up finish of the season – his first since the Spanish Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s podium marked the 750th podium finish for a British driver in Formula 1.

This was Hamilton’s fourth finish as runner-up in Mexico, overtaking Jack Brabham as the driver with the most second place finishes at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

With Hamilton setting the fastest lap, Mercedes equalled Ferrari as the team to have recorded the most fastest laps in Mexico.

Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez becomes the 27th different circuit at which Hamilton has set the fastest lap, extending the record for most venues at which a driver has achieved the feat.

This was the third consecutive race in which the driver starting sixth finished on the podium. The last time the driver starting sixth recorded three podiums in a row was at the 2017 Belgian, Italian and Singapore Grands Prix.

Charles Leclerc’s third place finish at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix ensured Ferrari maintained their record for most podium finishes in Mexico. This was the team’s 12th top three finish in the country.

Leclerc finished on the podium for the fourth time this season, recording his first top three result since the Belgian Grand Prix.

Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is the 18th different circuit at which Leclerc has finished on the podium in his Formula 1 career.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen became the first drivers to score points in eight races at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

IN THE POINTS

Losing two positions from where he started to finish fourth, Carlos Sainz maintained his record of having never gained a place during the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Finishing fifth in the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, Lando Norris scored for the 11th consecutive race. Norris gained 12 positions from where he started, which is the most places he has made up in a race during his Formula 1 career.

Norris became the first driver to score points from 17th on the grid in Mexico since Gabriele Tarquini finished sixth in the 1989 Mexican Grand Prix. Norris recorded the best ever result from this position at the track.

Daniel Ricciardo recorded his first points of the 2023 season with seventh place at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix. The 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix was the last time Ricciardo finished in the top seven.

Oscar Piastri finished eighth on his first appearance at the Mexico City Grand Prix. With both Piastri and his team-mate finishing in the top eight, this was McLaren’s second consecutive double points finish in Mexico as well as the first time both McLaren drivers finished in the top eight in Mexico since 1989.

With both Ricciardo and Piastri in the top ten, the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix was the first race since the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix in which two Australian drivers scored points.

With Hamilton, Norris and Russell finishing in the points, Britain equalled their longest scoring streak in Formula 1 of 113 races. British drivers have scored in every race since the 2018 British Grand Prix. The previous 113-race scoring streak came between the 2009 Italian Grand Prix and the 2015 Italian Grand Prix.

Alex Albon finished in ninth place for the second consecutive race weekend. This was the best result for Williams in Mexico since Lance Stroll finished sixth in the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix.

Esteban Ocon’s tenth place finish made this the fifth consecutive race in Mexico in which the Enstone-based team scored a point.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

Pierre Gasly finished the Mexico City Grand Prix in 11th place for the second consecutive season. This was the first time that the Frenchman finished where he started in Mexico.

Yuki Tsunoda finished 12th, reaching the chequered flag for the first time in his three appearances at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Nico Hulkenberg became only the second driver, after Andrea de Cesaris to have started 200 Grands Prix without taking a victory. Hulkenberg finished 13th, making this his first visit to Mexico in which he has neither scored points nor retired.

Valtteri Bottas maintained his 100% finishing record at the Mexico City Grand Prix but failed to score for only the second time in his eight appearances at the event.

With Bottas 14th and Zhou Guanyu 15th, Alfa Romeo failed to score at the Mexico City Grand Prix for the first time since 2019.

During the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz became the first drivers to have raced 500 laps at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Verstappen, Hamilton and Bottas all extended the record for most finishes at the track.

THE RETIREES

Sergio Perez recorded a disappointing first lap retirement at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix. This was the second time Perez failed to finish his home race, after the 2018 Mexican Grand Prix.

This was the third time that Max Verstappen won the Mexico City Grand Prix while his team-mate retired. It also happened in 2017 and 2018.

Perez became the 11th driver to record a first lap retirement at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Kevin Magnussen crashed out of the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, bringing out the red flags. This was the third race in Mexico to be red-flagged, after the 1987 and 1989 Mexican Grands Prix.

Magnussen recorded his fourth retirement of the year – his first since the British Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso failed to finish the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, making this the fourth time in his seven appearances at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez that he failed to reach the chequered flag.

On his 25th birthday, Lance Stroll failed to finish the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix following contact with Valtteri Bottas. Stroll is the second driver to retire from a Formula 1 race on their 25th birthday, after Carlos Sainz at the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix.

This was the Silverstone-based team’s first double retirement in Mexico since 1992, as Jordan.

For both Magnussen and Stroll, this was their first retirement from the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Logan Sargeant retired in the closing stages of the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, recording his seventh DNF of the year. This was the American driver’s third retirement in the last four races.

Sargeant became the first Williams driver to record a retirement in Mexico since Thierry Boutsen in 1989.
