After that he was embroiled in a battle for the final podium spot with his team-mate, in which he came out on top.

Liam Lawson reached Q2 for the first time on Saturday at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, qualifying just one position behind AlphaTauri team-mate Yuki Tsunoda. On Sunday, Lawson finished 12th on the track but moved up one position to 11th when Oscar Piastri received a post-race penalty. Lawson moved ahead of Nyck de Vries and Daniel Ricciardo in the Drivers’ Championship as a result.
