Antonelli moves ahead of Russell on the all-time win list, Leclerc reaches 1,000 laps led and Verstappen finishes on the podium at a 32nd different circuit. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix!
ANTONELLI WINS THE 2026 SPANISH GRAND PRIX
Kimi Antonelli became the first Grand Prix winner at the all-new MADRING, securing victory at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix. This was his eighth win of the season.
For the first time, Antonelli overtook team-mate George Russell on the all-time wins list. This was the eighth win of his career, becoming the 43rd driver to have secured as many as eight F1 victories. He equalled Jacky Ickx, Denny Hulme and Daniel Ricciardo on the Grand Prix victories list.
This was the first time Antonelli secured consecutive wins since taking five in a row between the Chinese and Monaco Grands Prix earlier this year.
Antonelli’s championship lead now stands at 81 points – the largest lead since Max Verstappen held an 84-point advantage after the 2024 British Grand Prix.
This was the 251st victory recorded by a Mercedes-powered car in Formula 1. It equals Ferrari’s record.
ON THE PODIUM
Max Verstappen and Lando Norris joined Kimi Antonelli on the podium at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix. This was the third race of the year – after the Chinese and Dutch Grands Prix – at which the top three starters all finished on the podium, albeit not in the same order as they began.
Verstappen maintains his record of finishing on the podium at every circuit on the current Formula 1 calendar. The new Madring was the only track heading into this season at which he was yet to take a top three finish. This is the 32nd different circuit in total at which Verstappen has finished on the podium.
Verstappen has finished in the top three in four of the last five races.
Red Bull have now failed to win all of the last 14 races. It is the team’s longest streak without a victory since they failed to win 30 races between Daniel Ricciardo’s victory at the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix and Verstappen’s first win with the team at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix.
Norris recorded his fifth podium finish of the season – and his third in the last four races.
This was the 41st consecutive podium to feature a Mercedes-powered car. It equals the engine manufacturer’s personal best streak, which came between the 2019 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix.
IN THE POINTS
Charles Leclerc led 32 laps of the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix on his way to a fourth place finish. In doing so, he became the 20th driver to have led as many as 1,000 Grand Prix laps during his Formula 1 career.
George Russell set the fastest lap of the race, securing the 250th fastest lap for a Mercedes-powered car in Formula 1. They are the second engine manufacturer to reach the milestone, after Ferrari at the 2018 British Grand Prix.
Liam Lawson finished sixth in the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix, scoring points for the eighth time in the last ten races. This was Lawson’s best result to date as a Red Bull driver and the fifth top six result so far in his career.
Seventh place for Franco Colapinto in the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix equalled the second-best result of his Formula 1 career to date, bettered only by his sixth place finish in the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix.
Finishing ninth, Arvid Lindblad scored points for the eighth time in the last nine races – the exception being his 12th place finish at the Dutch Grand Prix.
With tenth place, Nico Hulkenberg scored a point for the third time in the last four races, having not picked up any points in the 11 races before then. Audi have now scored points in all but one of the last six race weekends.
THE OTHER FINISHERS
Esteban Ocon finished 11th in the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix – his and the Haas team’s best result since scoring points in Monaco.
This was Haas’ eighth consecutive point-less Grand Prix weekend.
In what was expected to be his final appearance with Racing Bulls, Yuki Tsunoda finished 14th in the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix – the worst result of his three appearances with the team this season.
Williams endured an eighth consecutive Grand Prix without scoring a point. It is their longest streak without a point since failing to score at ten successive races between the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix and the 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
THE RETIREES
Lewis Hamilton was the first driver to retire from the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix, pulling into the pits with braking issues early in the race. This was his first retirement since the 2025 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Hamilton ended his record of having completed every lap in the 2026 season. This was the first time this year that he failed to finish in the top six.
Lance Stroll was the second driver to retire from the race after making contact with the barriers. He recorded a third successive retirement – equalling his longest streak of non-finishes for the second time this year.
This was Stroll’s tenth DNF of the 2026 season. In the last 17 races, Stroll has failed to finish on 12 occasions. It took him 81 races to record his previous 12 non-finishes.
This was the 15th retirement for an Aston Martin driver this season.
Sergio Perez retired from the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix, recording his fourth DNF in the last seven races. Cadillac have recorded 11 retirements in their 14 races to date in Formula 1.
Carlos Sainz failed to finish his first home race in Madrid, recording his third retirement of the year.
