Antonelli wins from 19th on the grid and becomes the first Italian home winner in 60 years, while consecutive races feature red flags for the first time since 2023. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2026 Italian Grand Prix!
ANTONELLI WINS THE 2026 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX
Kimi Antonelli took victory in the 2026 Italian Grand Prix. Securing the seventh victory of his career, he equalled team-mate George Russell, along with Rene Arnoux and Juan Pablo Montoya, for 43rd on the all-time win list.
Antonelli is only the second Italian driver, after Alberto Ascari, to have recorded as many as seven Grand Prix victories. In total, this was the 50th win for an Italian driver in F1. Italy is the eighth nation to record as many as 50 victories.
Antonelli became the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966, almost exactly 60 years ago to the day.
Winning from 19th on the grid, Antonelli took the second furthest back win in F1 history. This was the first Grand Prix to be won from 19th on the grid, though the 1954 Indianapolis 500 – which was a round of the World Championship – was won from 19th by Bill Vukovich. The only further back win was for John Watson, who won from 22nd on the grid at the 1983 United States Grand Prix West.
This was the first podium finish for an Italian driver at the Italian Grand Prix since Giancarlo Fisichella finished third in 2005.
ON THE PODIUM
George Russell and Max Verstappen joined Kimi Antonelli on the podium at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix. They are the first trio of drivers to share more than one podium in 2026, having also finished in the top three together at the Austrian Grand Prix.
This was Mercedes’ first 1-2 finish at the Italian Grand Prix since 2017, as well as their first double podium finish at the event since 2019.
It was Mercedes’ third 1-2 finish of the season and their first since Antonelli’s first win at the Chinese Grand Prix.
Russell recorded his best-ever Monza result with second place. It was his second podium finish at the track, having finished third in the 2022 Italian Grand Prix.
Verstappen recorded his fourth Italian Grand Prix podium finish in the last five years. This was the first time he finished on the podium at Monza having not won the race.
IN THE POINTS
Finishing fourth and fifth, this was the first time since 2023 that McLaren failed to finish on the podium at the Italian Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton finished sixth in the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, remaining the only driver to finish in the top six at every race so far this season.
Hamilton’s third place in 2019 remains the last time he finished in the top four at Monza.
Having started from pole position, six years to the day since taking his maiden win at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly led the opening lap of the 2026 Italian Grand Prix. Monza remains the only circuit at which he has led a lap during his Formula 1 career.
Gasly became the first polesitter to finish a race in seventh place since Lando Norris at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix.
Gasly scored points at Monza for the first time since 2022.
With both Gasly and Franco Colapinto scoring, this was Alpine’s first double points-scoring appearance at the Italian Grand Prix since 2021.
Arvid Lindblad finished eighth, scoring points for the seventh time in the last eight Grands Prix.
On his second appearance in 2026, Yuki Tsunoda returned to the points for the first time since the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix. Tenth place marks his best-ever result, and first point, at Monza. He had never previously finished above 13th place here.
Tsunoda became the first driver to score a point from 15th on the grid at the Italian Grand Prix since Nick Heidfeld finished seventh in 2009.
The 2026 Italian Grand Prix was the 177th consecutive race in which at least one British driver scored a point. Having scored in every race since the 2018 British Grand Prix, Britain set a new record for the most consecutive races in which a nation has scored a point. The previous record was 176 successive races in the points for Germany, between the 2008 British Grand Prix and the 2017 Italian Grand Prix.
THE OTHER FINISHERS
Neither Williams driver scored a point in the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, making this the first time since 2020 that the team walked away from Monza having not picked up a point.
Alex Albon finished 17th, failing to score for only the second time in his six Italian Grand Prix appearances.
Liam Lawson finished 14th in the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, failing to score a point for only the second time in the last nine race weekends.
With Ollie Bearman 15th and Esteban Ocon 16th, 2024 remains the only time in their 11 appearances at the Italian Grand Prix that Haas have scored a point.
Sergio Perez’s 18th place finish marked the end of a streak of 11 consecutive Italian Grand Prix appearances in which he scored points.
THE RETIREES
Charles Leclerc crashed out on the second lap of the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, bringing out the red flags. He crashed at the same corner as he crashed six years ago to the day at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix. Leclerc has been the cause of the last two red flags at Monza.
With the red flag having also been shown at the Dutch Grand Prix, this is the first time there have been red flags at successive races since the 2023 Mexico City and Sao Paulo Grands Prix.
This was Leclerc’s third non-finish of the year, after Monaco and Barcelona.
Aston Martin recorded their fourth double DNF of the season at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, after Australia, China and Barcelona.
Fernando Alonso was first of the Aston Martins to retire, recording his fifth non-finish of the year.
This was the second year in a row that Alonso failed to finish at Monza, as well as his seventh retirement in his last 11 Italian Grand Prix appearances.
Stroll recorded his second DNF at Monza, having last retired here in 2022.
This was the second time, after 2022, that Aston Martin recorded a double DNF at the Italian Grand Prix.
