2025 Italian Grand Prix: Qualifying Statistics

Verstappen sets the fastest lap in Formula 1 history, Red Bull overtake Lotus in the all-time pole list and Hadjar records his first Q1 exit. Here are the facts and statistics from qualifying at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix!

VERSTAPPEN ON POLE AT THE 2025 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen secured pole position for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix with the fastest lap in Formula 1 history.

Verstappen set a new Track Record at Monza with a lap time of 1:18.792 – breaking Lewis Hamilton’s previous record set in qualifying for the 2020 Italian Grand Prix by 0.095 seconds.

This was Verstappen’s fifth pole position of the 2025 season, tying Oscar Piastri for the most poles so far this year.

Verstappen secured Red Bull’s 108th pole position, which saw Red Bull overtake Lotus as the team with the fifth-most poles in Formula 1 history.

This was Verstappen’s 45th pole position with Red Bull, overtaking Sebastian Vettel as the driver who has taken the most poles with the team. He also overtakes Vettel for fourth on the list of most pole positions with a single team.

Although this was Verstappen’s second pole position at the Italian Grand Prix, it was the first time he has been fastest in Q3 at Monza. He secured pole in 2021 as a result of finishing second in the Sprint race to Valtteri Bottas, who had a grid penalty.

Verstappen’s pole ended a streak of five different polesitters at the Italian Grand Prix.

IN THE TOP TEN

Qualifying second for the second race in a row, Lando Norris qualified on the front row at successive races for the first time since the Monaco and Spanish Grands Prix.

This was the second year in a row that Norris qualified on the front row at Monza, having taken pole position in 2024.

Setting the third fastest time in Q3 at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri qualified off the front row for the first time since the Austrian Grand Prix.

Piastri maintained his 100% Q3 appearance rate at the Italian Grand Prix. Kimi Antonelli and Gabriel Bortoleto joined the group, of which Sebastien Bourdais is the only other member.

Lewis Hamilton qualified in the top five for the first time since the British Grand Prix – but he’ll start tenth as a result of serving a five-place grid penalty carried over from the previous race.

Hamilton qualified in the top ten at Monza for the 17th time. That saw him overtake Michael Schumacher for the most top ten qualifications at the Italian Grand Prix.

George Russell qualified in the top six for the eighth race in a row. His Q2 exit at the Monaco Grand Prix is the only time he has not qualified in the top six so far this season.

After missing out on a spot in the top ten for the last three race weekends, Kimi Antonelli reached Q3 for the first time since the British Grand Prix.

With Russell sixth and Antonelli seventh, this was the first Italian Grand Prix for which neither Mercedes driver qualified in the top five since 2013.

For the fourth time in the last six races, Gabriel Bortoleto reached Q3 at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix.

Bortoleto equalled the Sauber team’s best qualifying result at Monza from the last 12 years. Antonio Giovinazzi qualified eighth as a result of the Sprint race at the track in 2021.

Fernando Alonso qualified ninth for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix. It is his best qualifying result at Monza since setting the seventh fastest time in Q3 in 2014.

Alonso recorded Aston Martin’s best Monza qualifying result to date – and the best for the Silverstone-based team since they were under their Racing Point guise in 2020.

Yuki Tsunoda reached Q3 for the second time in the last ten races. This was Tsunoda’s first Q3 appearance in five F1 outings at Monza.

ELIMINATED IN Q2

Both Haas drivers were eliminated in Q2 at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix. In the last eight races, Ollie Bearman’s Q3 appearance at the British Grand Prix is the only time a Haas driver has qualified in the top ten.

Both Williams drivers were eliminated in Q2. For the first time in his five appearances at Monza, Alex Albon failed to reach Q3 at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix. He qualified 14th.

Carlos Sainz failed to reach Q3 for the eighth time in the last nine races. This was the first time Sainz failed to reach Q3 at the Italian Grand Prix since 2017.

Esteban Ocon and Nico Hulkenberg recorded their fifth Q2 eliminations at the Italian Grand Prix, equalling Daniil Kvyat for the most Q2 exits at Monza.

This was Ocon’s fifth Q2 exit in the last six seasons at the Italian Grand Prix. It was the sixth year in a row that he has been out-qualified by his team-mate at the track.

Hulkenberg equalled his best qualifying result of the season. He last qualified 12th at the Chinese Grand Prix.

OUT IN Q1

For the fourth year in a row, Lance Stroll was eliminated in Q1 at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix. This was his fourth Q1 exit at Monza, equalling the record for most Q1 eliminations at the track. The record is now shared between six drivers: Stroll, Kevin Magnussen, Marcus Ericsson, Romain Grosjean, Timo Glock and Vitantonio Liuzzi.

This was Stroll’s sixth Q1 exit in the last seven races.

On his 16th Formula 1 appearance, Isack Hadjar recorded the first Q1 exit of his career.

With both Hadjar and Liam Lawson eliminated in Q1 at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, the Red Bull junior team recorded their first double Q1 elimination since the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix. This was the team’s first double Q1 exit at Monza since 2009.

This was Lawson’s first Q1 exit since the British Grand Prix. Lawson set the slowest lap time in Q1 for the second time this year, having last done so at the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix.

Both Alpine drivers were out in Q1 at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, with Franco Colapinto out-qualifying Pierre Gasly for the third time this year. It was the team’s first double Q1 elimination since the Monaco Grand Prix.

This was the Enstone team’s fourth double Q1 exit at Monza, after 2014, 2016 and 2023.

Colapinto qualified 18th for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix – the same position as he qualified for his F1 debut at Monza last year.

This was Gasly’s second back row qualification of the 2025 season – his first since the Canadian Grand Prix.

This was the first time Gasly was out-qualified by his team-mate at Monza since the 2019 Italian Grand Prix.
