2024 Monaco Grand Prix: Race Statistics, Facts and Trivia

Leclerc records the first home win for a Monegasque driver in 93 years, Piastri records McLaren’s best Monaco result since 2008 and Hamilton sets a new record for the most fastest laps with a single team. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix.

LECLERC WINS THE 2024 MONACO GRAND PRIX

Charles Leclerc finally broke his home race curse and took victory at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. This was the first Monaco Grand Prix win for a Monegasque driver since Louis Chiron won in 1931, 93 years ago. Leclerc is also the first Monegasque driver to finish on the podium in Monaco since Chiron in 1950.

This was the sixth victory of Leclerc’s career – his first since the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix.

After 12 successive failed attempts to convert pole into a win, Leclerc won from pole position for the first time since the 2022 Australian Grand Prix.

Leclerc recorded Ferrari’s tenth victory at the Monaco Grand Prix. It was the team’s first win in the principality since Sebastian Vettel won in 2017.

Leclerc became the first Ferrari driver to convert pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix into a win since Jody Scheckter in 1979. Niki Lauda is the only other Ferrari driver to have done so, in 1975 and 1976.

The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix was the 500th Grand Prix in which a Ferrari-powered car has led a lap.

Leclerc was voted Driver of the Day with 32.4% of the vote. It was his 14th win in total, tying with Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez as the driver to have won the vote on the third-most occasions.

This was Leclerc’s third consecutive podium finish. It’s the first time he has finished in the top three at three races in a row since the 2022 Singapore, Japanese and United States Grands Prix.

ON THE PODIUM

With their podium finishes at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz remained in a small group of drivers who have scored points on every appearance at Circuit de Monaco.

Sainz became the 34th driver to record three podium finishes at the Monaco Grand Prix, while Leclerc and Piastri both recorded their first top three finishes in the principality.

With second place, Piastri equalled the best Grand Prix result of his career to date. He last finished on the podium – and in second place – at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.

Piastri recorded McLaren’s first top two finish in Monaco since Lewis Hamilton won the 2008 Monaco Grand prix with the team.

Piastri’s podium made the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix the 350th Grand Prix weekend at which an Australian driver has scored a point. It also made Australia the seventh nation to score 3,000 points in Formula 1.

This was Sainz’s first podium finish since he finished third at the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix.

This was the fifth Monaco Grand Prix in which the top three starters finished in the same order as they started.

For only the fourth time this decade, neither Mercedes nor Red Bull finished on the podium. This was the first time since 2009 that neither team finished on the Monaco Grand Prix podium (or since 2008, if you count Brawn GP as the same team as Mercedes).

IN THE POINTS

During the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, Lando Norris overtook Mika Hakkinen as the driver who has raced the third most Grand Prix laps with McLaren. It is now an all-British top three in that particular list, with only David Coulthard and Jenson Button sitting ahead of Norris.

Norris finished fourth, ending a streak of three consecutive podium finishes. Nevertheless, this was his sixth consecutive top five finish.

With Piastri second and Norris fourth, McLaren recorded their first double top four result at the Monaco Grand Prix since the team recorded a 1-2 finish in 2007.

Finishing fifth, George Russell made the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix the 50th Grand Prix in which he has scored a point. This was the third consecutive year in which Russell has finished the Monaco Grand Prix in fifth place.

Russell recorded his – and Mercedes’ – first top five finish since the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix was the first race in which Max Verstappen did not lead a lap since the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, ending a streak of 14 consecutive races at which he has led at least a single lap – the fifth longest such streak in F1 history.

This was the first race in which Verstappen finished in a position outside of the podium places since finishing fifth at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. Not counting DNFs, this was the first time Verstappen finished as low as sixth since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

This was the first time since 2019 that Verstappen did not finish on the podium at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Continuing to lead the Drivers’ Championship after the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, Max Verstappen equals Sebastian Vettel as the driver to have led the title race on the third-most occasions. This is the 62nd race after which Verstappen has led the championship.

With Verstappen sixth and Sergio Perez retiring, this was the first Monaco Grand Prix in which neither Red Bull finished in the top five since 2007.

Lewis Hamilton recorded the fastest lap of the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. In doing so, he set a new record for the most fastest laps recorded with a single team. This was Hamilton’s 54th fastest lap with Mercedes, overtaking Michael Schumacher’s record of 53 fastest laps with Ferrari.

Hamilton’s fastest lap at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix made him the first driver to set a fastest lap in 17 Formula 1 seasons. He also equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of setting fastest laps in 15 consecutive years.

This was Hamilton’s 16th top ten finish at the Monaco Grand Prix, extending the record for most top ten finishes at the event. Hamilton has scored in every Monaco race since 2010.

Finishing eighth, Yuki Tsunoda scored points for the fifth time in the last six races. This was Tsunoda’s first top 14 finish at the Monaco Grand Prix.

With ninth place in the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, Alex Albon scored his and Williams’ first points of the year. This was Albon’s first points finish since the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix.

Albon became the first Williams driver to score points at the Monaco Grand Prix since Felipe Massa, who finished ninth in 2017.

This was the first time Albon scored a point at the Monaco Grand Prix since 2019, when he finished 12th with Toro Rosso.

Pierre Gasly finished tenth in the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, scoring his first point of the 2024 season. This was his first points finish since the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. All of Albon’s last three points-scoring Grands Prix have been ninth place finishes.

Gasly made this the fifth time in his six Monaco Grand Prix appearances that he has scored a point.

All of the top ten drivers finished in the same order as they started in the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. It was the first time this has occurred in Formula 1 history. The previous record was the top six finishing in grid order, which happened at the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix, the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix and the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

Fernando Alonso finished in 11th place at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, failing to score for a second consecutive race. He last failed to score at two races in a row at the 2023 United States and Mexico City Grands Prix.

Daniel Ricciardo finished 12th in the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, equalling his best result of the season so far.

13th place in the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix marked Valtteri Bottas’ best result of the year so far. It was his best finish since the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.

Bottas gained four places during the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix – the first time he has gained places in a race since the 2023 United States Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso and Zhou Guanyu were the only other drivers to gain places in the race.

Lance Stroll finished 14th. He was the only driver to finish the Monaco Grand Prix in a worse position than where he started.

This was the first Monaco Grand Prix since 2019 in which neither of the Silverstone-based team’s cars scored a point.

With 15th place, Logan Sargeant equalled his best result of the season to date. He also finished 15th in the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

THE RETIREES

Three drivers were eliminated in the opening lap crash at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix in an incident which resulted in a lengthy red flag period. It made this the eighth Monaco Grand Prix to be red-flagged, after 1984, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2011, 2013 and 2022.

Sergio Perez, Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen were all out as a result of the first lap crash. They became the first drivers to be out on Lap 1 of the Monaco Grand Prix since Perez himself in 2014.

Esteban Ocon joined them on the sidelines following a collision with his Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly. It was the sixth first lap retirement of Ocon’s career – his first since the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix.

This was Ocon’s first retirement since the 2023 United States Grand Prix and the first time he has ever failed to finish the Monaco Grand Prix.

This was the first time as many as four drivers have been eliminated on the first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix since 1996 – when five drivers were out on Lap 1 – as well as the first time as many as four drivers have been out on Lap 1 of any Grand Prix since the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Haas recorded their first double retirement since the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix. Haas had not recorded a DNF in the 2024 season before the Monaco Grand Prix. It leaves McLaren and Ferrari as the only teams yet to record a retirement in a Grand Prix this year.

Haas have recorded five retirements in the last three Monaco Grands Prix.

Kevin Magnussen recorded a retirement at the Monaco Grand Prix for the third consecutive season.

Sergio Perez recorded his first retirement since the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, in which he was also out on the opening lap. This was his first DNF at the Monaco Grand Prix since 2014, when he was also out on Lap 1.
