2024 Canadian Grand Prix: Race Statistics, Facts and Trivia

Verstappen secures his 60th Grand Prix win, McLaren score points in Canada for the first time in ten years and Alonso sets a new points record. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix.

VERSTAPPEN WINS THE 2024 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen secured the 60th victory of his Formula 1 career at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix. Verstappen is the third driver to record 60 Grand Prix wins in F1, after Michael Schumacher at the 2002 British Grand Prix and Lewis Hamilton at the 2017 Singapore Grand Prix.

Verstappen became the fourth driver to have won three races at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and the third (after Schumacher and Hamilton) to have taken three consecutive wins at the track.

Red Bull equal the record for most consecutive wins at the Canadian Grand Prix. They are the fourth team to win three consecutive wins at the Montreal track, after Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes.

After the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, Verstappen leads the Drivers’ Championship for the 63rd time. He overtakes Sebastian Vettel as the driver to have led the standings on the fourth-most occasions.

ON THE PODIUM

Lando Norris and George Russell joined Max Verstappen on the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix podium, with both British drivers recording their first podium finishes at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Finishing as runner-up, Lando Norris recorded his fourth podium finish in the last five races.

Norris’ podium and Oscar Piastri’s fifth place finish marks the first time that McLaren have scored any points at the Canadian Grand Prix since 2014. Norris’ podium is McLaren’s first in Montreal since Lewis Hamilton’s 2012 victory, while this is the first time the team have finished with both cars in the top five at the track since their 1-2 finish in 2010.

With third place, George Russell recorded Mercedes’ first podium finish of the 2024 season. His podium made this the tenth consecutive Canadian Grand Prix in which the team has finished with at least one car in the top three.

Having started from pole, Russell fell two places and finished third. It was the worst result for a Canadian Grand Prix polesitter since 2012, when Sebastian Vettel finished fourth.

IN THE POINTS

Lewis Hamilton finished fourth in the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, recording his first top five finish since finishing on the podium at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix.

Hamilton set the fastest lap for a second consecutive race. This is the first time Hamilton has secured the fastest lap at two races in a row since doing so at the 2020 Portuguese and Emilia Romagna Grands Prix.

Hamilton gained three positions during the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix. It’s the first time he has ever gained more than one place from where he has started in Montreal.

Oscar Piastri finished fifth, recording points at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the first time.

With sixth place in the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso set a new record for the longest time between first and last points scoring appearances in Formula 1. His latest points come 21 years and 3 months after his first points at the 2003 Australian Grand Prix. He overtakes Michael Schumacher’s record by two weeks. Schumacher’s former record was 21 years, 2 months and 17 days between his first points at the 1991 Italian Grand Prix and his last at the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.

After the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, Alonso sits second in the list of drivers who’ve raced the most laps at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He overtook Kimi Raikkonen’s tally during the race and now sits 50 laps behind Michael Schumacher.

Lance Stroll finished seventh in the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, recording his best home result to date. It was the fifth time he has scored points in six appearances at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Seventh marks Stroll’s best result since finishing fifth at the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Stroll’s seventh place is the best result for a Canadian driver at the Canadian Grand Prix since Jacques Villeneuve finished on the podium in 1996.

The 2024 Canadian Grand Prix is the first time both of the Silverstone-based team’s cars have finished in the top seven in Montreal since 2017.

Daniel Ricciardo scored his first Grand Prix points of the season with an eighth place finish in the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix. This is the sixth time in the last seven races that RB have picked up points.

Ricciardo’s eighth place finish marked the first top eight result for the Red Bull junior team at the Canadian Grand Prix since Jean-Eric Vergne finished eighth in 2014.

Pierre Gasly finished ninth in the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, recording Alpine’s best result of the season to date.

This was the first time Gasly has scored points at the Canadian Grand Prix since 2019.

Esteban Ocon finished tenth in the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, making this his second points-scoring Sunday afternoon of the season.

Following Charles Leclerc’s retirement, Ocon is now the only current driver with a 100% points-finishing record at the Canadian Grand Prix. The 2024 race was Ocon’s fifth points-scoring race at the track, overtaking Gilles Villeneuve as the driver who has made the most appearances at the track without recording a non-points finish.

With both Gasly and Ocon in the points, this was Alpine’s first double points scoring Grand Prix since the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

2014 remains the last time that Kevin Magnussen scored points at the Canadian Grand Prix. With 12th place, he equalled his best result at the track since then. He last finished in the top 12 here in 2017.

Valtteri Bottas finished 13th at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, failing to score a point in Montreal for the first time since his maiden season in 2013.

Bottas gained six positions in the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix – the most places he has ever gained in a race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

With Bottas 13th and Zhou Guanyu 15th, this was the first time neither Sauber driver scored at the Canadian Grand Prix since 2019.

THE RETIREES

Logan Sargeant was the first of five drivers to retire from the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix. He continues to hold a 100% DNF rate at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, having now retired from both of his appearances at the track. He is the 16th driver to make multiple appearances at the track without ever finishing.

With Alex Albon retiring later in the race, Williams recorded their first double non-finish at the Canadian Grand Prix since both drivers were disqualified from the 2004 race. This is their first double DNF at the track since 1995.

Albon’s retirement marked the first DNF for the driver starting tenth on the grid at the Canadian Grand Prix since 2007, when Jarno Trulli retired having started there.

Charles Leclerc recorded his first non-finish since failing to start the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. This was the Ferrari driver’s first DNF at the Canadian Grand Prix. He lost his 100% points-finishing record at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as a result.

Carlos Sainz recorded his first retirement of the 2024 season after spinning out of the Canadian Grand Prix. This was his first DNF since the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

This was the first time Ferrari recorded a retirement at the Canadian Grand Prix, as well as the first time the team recorded a double DNF in Montreal since 1996.

This was Ferrari’s first point-less Grand Prix since the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, as well as the team’s first double DNF since the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

After breaking his rear wing, Sergio Perez retired for a second consecutive Grand Prix weekend. This is the first time he has recorded DNFs at successive races since doing so at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix.
