Verstappen overtakes Vettel’s Red Bull win tally, Sainz maintains two impressive qualifying records and Perez becomes the first driver to take an unwanted accolade in almost 20 years. Here’s a statistic from each driver’s 2023 Monaco Grand Prix weekend.
🇳🇱 Max VERSTAPPEN
After moving ahead of Fernando Alonso to 13th in the all-time list of most pole positions on Saturday, Max Verstappen won the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, becoming the 17th driver to take multiple wins in Monaco.
This was the 39th victory of Verstappen’s career, which sees him overtake Sebastian Vettel as the driver to have scored the most wins with the Red Bull team. Verstappen now sits third in the list of drivers who’ve taken the most wins with a single team.
Verstappen led every lap of the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, making it the eighth race which he led from start to finish. Verstappen became only the eighth driver to have led as many as eight F1 races from start to end.
At the end of the first lap of the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, Verstappen became the seventh driver to have led 2,000 laps in Formula 1. He also moved ahead of Fernando Alonso in the all-time list of most points scored in Formula 1. The 2023 Monaco Grand Prix was the 25th consecutive race in which Verstappen scored, seeing him overtake Michael Schumacher for the fourth longest points scoring streak in Formula 1.
Verstappen won the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix by 27.921 seconds – the largest win margin since the 2021 Russian Grand Prix. It was the largest win margin in Monaco since 1999, when Michael Schumacher won by 30.476 seconds.
🇲🇽 Sergio PEREZ
On his 50th start with Red Bull, Sergio Perez failed to score at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix. He became the first driver who failed to score while their team-mate won in Monaco since Fernando Alonso in 2004. After crashing at Ste Devote on Saturday, Perez recorded his third Q1 exit in Monaco. Finishing 16th, this was the first time Perez finished a race without scoring since the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. It was the fourth time in the last six Monaco Grands Prix that Perez failed to score.
🇲🇨 Charles LECLERC
Charles Leclerc qualified in third place for the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix but dropped to sixth on the final grid after being handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding. Leclerc reached the chequered flag at his home race for the second consecutive season, finishing where he started. This was the first time Leclerc did not lose a position from where he started at the Monaco Grand Prix.
🇪🇸 Carlos SAINZ
On the weekend where he became the 16th driver to make 50 race starts with Ferrari, Carlos Sainz maintained his 100% points-scoring rate at the Monaco Grand Prix. This was the first time he finished outside of the top six in Monaco since 2018. Finishing eighth for the 20th time in his career, Sainz equalled Jenson Button as the driver who has recorded the most eighth place finishes in Formula 1.
Qualifying fifth on Saturday, Sainz remains the only driver to qualify in the top five at every race in 2023 as well as the only current driver with a 100% Q3 appearance rate at the Monaco Grand Prix.
🇬🇧 Lewis HAMILTON
Lewis Hamilton his best Monaco Grand Prix qualifying result and race result since 2019. Making his 14th Q3 appearance at the Monaco Grand Prix, Hamilton moved ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the list of most Q3 appearances at Circuit de Monaco. He also extended his record of most top ten finishes at the event and overtook Sebastian Vettel as the driver to have scored the most points in Monaco Grand Prix history.
Over the course of the race, Hamilton overtook Rubens Barrichello, Kimi Raikkonen and Graham Hill to move up to second on the list of most laps raced at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Hamilton recorded the fastest lap of the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix. It made 2023 the 16th season in which Hamilton has recorded the fastest lap of a race. He equalled Michael Schumacher as the driver who has recorded fastest laps in the most Formula 1 seasons.
🇬🇧 George RUSSELL
Qualifying in eighth for the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, George Russell was out-qualified by a team-mate at the Monaco Grand Prix for the first time. For the second consecutive season, Russell finished fifth at the Monaco Grand Prix.
🇫🇷 Esteban OCON
After recording the second-best qualifying result of his career with fourth place, Esteban Ocon finished in third place at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix. This was the 25th podium finish in total for a French driver at the Monaco Grand Prix during its time on the Formula 1 calendar; the first since Olivier Panis in 1996.
Ocon recorded the Enstone team’s first podium result at the Monaco Grand Prix since Robert Kubica, who finished third with Renault in 2010. It was the Alpine team’s first podium finish since the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix.
This was Ocon’s first podium result since his victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix. He was voted Driver Of The Day; this being the first time he won the accolade.
🇫🇷 Pierre GASLY
With seventh place at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly recorded his best result with Alpine to date. This was the Frenchman’s best result since finishing fifth at the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This was the fourth consecutive Monaco Grand Prix in which the driver who started seventh finished seventh.
🇬🇧 Lando NORRIS
Lando Norris made his 88th start with McLaren at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, overtaking Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have made the eighth most starts with the team. Along with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, Norris made this the 100th consecutive race in which a British driver has scored. It’s only the third time that a country has scored at 100 races in a row.
🇦🇺 Oscar PIASTRI
For the fifth Monaco Grand Prix weekend in a row, one McLaren driver reached Q3 while the other was out in Q2. Oscar Piastri qualified in 11th place, recording the first Q2 elimination of his career. On Sunday, Piastri gained one position from where he started to record points for the second time in his career. With team-mate Lando Norris also scoring, this was the first time since 2016 that both McLaren drivers have scored at the Monaco Grand Prix.
🇫🇮 Valtteri BOTTAS
Valtteri Bottas was eliminated in Q2 at the Monaco Grand Prix for a second consecutive year. He qualified 15th. It was his second worst qualifying result at the track; only his 17th place in 2015 was worse.
🇨🇳 ZHOU Guanyu
Zhou Guanyu qualified 19th for the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, maintaining his 100% Q1 exit record in the principality. He qualified one position better than where he qualified in 2022 but remains yet to qualify better than on the back row of the grid.
🇪🇸 Fernando ALONSO
On the weekend at he equalled Rubens Barrichello as the driver who has made the most starts at the Monaco Grand Prix, Alonso finished in the top two for the first time since the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix. This was his first podium finish at the Monaco Grand Prix since 2012, while Saturday saw him record his first front row start in Monaco since 2007. This is the first time Alonso qualified on the front row at successive events since taking back-to-back poles at the 2012 British and German Grands Prix.
Alonso’s latest podium saw him equal Kimi Raikkonen’s career tally of 103 podiums. It put Alonso equal fifth in the all-time list of most top three finishes. He also became only the ninth driver to record five or more podium results in Monaco – and the first to have done so with four different teams.
🇨🇦 Lance STROLL
Qualifying 14th, Lance Stroll maintained his record of having never reached Q3 at the Monaco Grand Prix. Stroll was the first retirement from the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix on Lap 54 – a new record for the furthest into a Monaco race before the first retirement. The previous record was Lap 53; the lap on which Fernando Alonso retired from the 2018 race.
This was Stroll’s second retirement at the Monaco Grand Prix; the first time he has failed to finish the event since his maiden season in 2017.
🇩🇰 Kevin MAGNUSSEN
For the first time in 2023, Kevin Magnussen out-qualified his team-mate at consecutive races. On Sunday, Magnussen was the second retirement from the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix. This is the second consecutive season in which Magnussen has retired from the Monaco Grand Prix and the Haas team’s third retirement in the last two Monaco races.
🇩🇪 Nico HULKENBERG
Nico Hulkenberg recorded his worst qualifying result of the 2023 season to date. It marked the first time the German was eliminated in Q1 at the Monaco Grand Prix.
🇯🇵 Yuki TSUNODA
Yuki Tsunoda reached Q3 at the Monaco Grand Prix for the first time. His previous best qualifying result here was 11th, which is where he qualified in 2022. Tsunoda recorded the AlphaTauri team’s second Q3 appearance of the 2023 season.
After suffering brake issues, Tsunoda recorded his worst result of the year to date with 15th place; thoug it was Tsunoda’s best result in Monaco to date.
🇳🇱 Nyck DE VRIES
Nyck de Vries qualified in 12th place, recording the best qualifying result of his career to date. It bettered the 13th place in which he qualified on his one-off appearance with Williams at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix.
De Vries finished the race where he started, recording his best result of the 2023 season to date. It marked the first time he finished ahead of his team-mate Yuki Tsunoda this year.
🇹🇭 Alex ALBON
Alex Albon qualified in 13th place. With Logan Sargeant out in Q1, it means that Pastor Maldonado remains the last Williams driver to reach Q3 at the Monaco Grand Prix. He did so back in 2012.
🇺🇸 Logan SARGEANT
Logan Sargeant finished 18th in the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix. He became the first American driver to complete the Monaco Grand Prix since Scott Speed in 2007.
