Mercedes have won eight of the last ten British Grands Prix, while Red Bull and Ferrari are the only other teams to win at Silverstone since 2009. Here’s everything you need to know about each team’s history at the British Grand Prix!
RED BULL
WINS: 4, POLES: 4, PODIUMS: 13 | 2022 RESULT: PEREZ 2nd, VERSTAPPEN 7th
In 2020, Max Verstappen recorded Red Bull’s first win at Silverstone in eight years with victory in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. It was the team’s fourth win at the circuit. Sebastian Vettel won in 2009 and Mark Webber won in 2010 and 2012. Their 1-2 finish in 2009 marked the first time Red Bull had scored points at the track, and they went on to finish on the podium with at least one car in all of the next six seasons.
Since 2014, other than their win, the team have recorded just three podium finishes here. Two were courtesy of Verstappen with second places in the 2016 and 2020 British Grands Prix, while Sergio Perez finished as runner-up in 2022.
In 2021, Verstappen was out on Lap 1 following a collision with Lewis Hamilton, while Sergio Perez finished only 16th. It was the first time the team failed to score at the track since 2008.
Max Verstappen secured Red Bull’s first pole at Silverstone since 2011 in 2021 as a result of Sprint Qualifying. Red Bull have taken a further three pole positions at Silverstone, and locked out the front row in both 2010 and 2011.
Since 2009, Daniel Ricciardo’s Q1 exit in 2017, the result of a turbo failure, and Alex Albon’s Q2 exit at the 2020 British Grand Prix are the only times a Red Bull driver has not reached Q3 at the track. Sergio Perez qualified last in 2021 as result of retiring from Sprint Qualifying.
FERRARI
WINS: 15, POLES: 12, PODIUMS: 47 | 2022 RESULT: SAINZ 1st, LECLERC 4th
Ferrari have been present in every Formula 1 race at Silverstone, aside from the inaugural race in 1950. With 15 wins here, Ferrari have taken more victories at Silverstone than any other team. The team won the British Grand Prix for the first time since 2011 with Sebastian Vettel in 2018. Carlos Sainz took his first victory with the Scuderia at Silverstone last year.
The team have scored podium finishes in ten of the last 12 races at the circuit, while Kimi Raikkonen’s third place in 2018 along with Vettel’s win gave Ferrari their first double podium appearance at Silverstone since 2004.
Since 2000, Raikkonen’s crash in 2014 is the only occasion on which a Ferrari driver has failed to finish the British Grand Prix, as well as one of only six occasions on which one of the team’s cars has failed to pick up points at the event in the last twenty Silverstone races. Vettel’s 16th place in 2019, after he crashed into the back of Max Verstappen, is the worst finishing position for a Ferrari car which has not failed to finish at the circuit.
Ferrari have taken pole position at Silverstone on 12 occasions, with Carlos Sainz securing the team’s first pole at the circuit in a decade in 2022. Between Fernando Alonso’s pole here in 2012 and Sainz’s 2022 pole (both of which were taken in damp conditions), the team recorded front row starts in both 2017 and 2018.
There have been just four seasons on which neither Ferrari driver has qualified in the top ten at Silverstone. This happened most recently in 2014. Aside from that year, Felipe Massa, Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz are the only other Ferrari drivers to have failed to reach Q3 here. Massa was eliminated in Q2 in both 2009 and 2013, Vettel was out in Q2 at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix and Sainz narrowly missed out on reaching Q3 in 2021.
MERCEDES
WINS: 8, POLES: 10, PODIUMS: 18 | 2022 RESULT: HAMILTON 3rd, RUSSELL DNF
Mercedes have won eight of the last ten British Grands Prix, with the 2022 British Grand Prix being only the third Silverstone race since 2013 that Mercedes have not won. Their streak of five consecutive wins was ended in 2018 by Ferrari, but Lewis Hamilton returned to the top spot in 2019 as the team took their third 1-2 finish at Silverstone.
Mercedes have never left Silverstone without scoring a point, including in their only appearance here in their first stint in the sport, in which Juan Manuel Fangio finished fourth.
In 2022, George Russell recorded the team’s second non-finish at Silverstone, after crashing out on the opening lap. Nico Rosberg’s retirement as a result of a gearbox failure in 2014 remains Mercedes’ only other retirement at the Silverstone circuit, while Valtteri Bottas’ 11th place in the 2020 British Grand Prix – a result of a late race puncture – is the only other time a Mercedes car has not finished in the top four since 2013.
Mercedes set the fastest qualifying time in all ten Silverstone races between 2013 and 2021, including the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020. However, they did not take pole position last year in 2021 as a result of Sprint Qualifying, while neither driver qualified in the top four in 2022.
Mercedes have locked-out the front row on six occasions at Silverstone. Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg’s 13th places in qualifying here in 2011 and 2012 are the only occasions in Mercedes’ 14 appearances at the circuit since 2010 on which one of their drivers have failed to qualify in the top ten. In their first stint in F1, Mercedes took pole at the 1954 British Grand Prix.
ALPINE
WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2022 RESULT: ALONSO 5th, OCON DNF
The Enstone-based team have won the British Grand Prix twice. Johnny Herbert recorded his maiden victory for Benetton at Silverstone in 1995, while Fernando Alonso won for Renault in 2006.
The team has recorded a further nine podium finishes at the circuit – including double podium finishes in 1993 and 1997. Alonso’s 2006 win remains their most recent top three finish at the circuit. The team have scored with both cars in three of the last five Silverstone races. They last failed to pick up any points in 2016, when they recorded a double DNF for a second year in succession.
Team Enstone recorded two pole positions at Silverstone under their Renault guise in 2005 and 2006 and have recorded a further three front row starts – two of those being as Benetton back in 1994 and 1995.
Their best qualifying result since Alonso’s 2006 pole at the track is fifth, recorded by Daniel Ricciardo at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. In 2021, neither driver reached Q3. It was the first time this had happened since 2018. However, both Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon started in the top ten as a result of Sprint Qualifying.
McLAREN
WINS: 12, POLES: 7, PODIUMS: 27 | 2022 RESULT: NORRIS 6th, RICCIARDO 13th
McLaren have won at Silverstone on 12 occasions, but haven’t finished on the podium at the British Grand Prix since 2010. Between 1985 and 2001, the 1996 and 2000 events were the only ones in which both McLaren cars reached the end of the race, the latter being the team’s only 1-2 finish at the track.
Lando Norris’ fifth place in the 2020 British Grand Prix was the team’s best result at the track since 2014. Norris went one better in 2021, finishing in fourth place. With Daniel Ricciardo finishing fifth, it was the first time both McLaren drivers finished in the points here since 2014 and their first double top five result in Britain since 2010. At least one McLaren driver has finished in the points in every Silverstone race since 2018.
McLaren have taken nine pole positions at Silverstone, most recently in 2008, and locked-out the front row in 1989. In the last 15 Silverstone races, the 2011, 2014 2020 and 2021 British Grands Prix are the only occasions on which both McLaren drivers have qualified in the top ten, while 2015 marks their only double Q1 exit at the circuit. 1983, 2009 and 2018 are the only other occasions aside from 2015 on which neither McLaren driver has qualified in the top ten at Silverstone.
ALFA ROMEO
WINS: 1, POLES: 1, PODIUMS: 4 | 2022 RESULT: BOTTAS DNF, ZHOU DNF
Alfa Romeo had a starring role in the first ever F1 race, which took place at Silverstone in 1950. Giuseppe Farina took pole position and won the event, with team-mate Luigi Fagioli finishing as runner-up, securing the first of four 1-2 finishes for Alfa Romeo in F1. With Reg Parnell finishing third for the team, it was an all-Alfa podium. Juan Manuel Fangio also scored a podium finish with Alfa Romeo at the circuit in 1951.
The team has scored points only once in the past ten Silverstone races, with Kimi Raikkonen finishing eighth in 2019. In the last ten races here, the team have recorded eight non-finishes, including double DNFs in 2018 and 2022. Their double retirement in 2018 was their first at Silverstone since 1998.
Sauber have taken one podium finish at the British Grand Prix. That was in their BMW Sauber days, when Nick Heidfeld finished as runner-up in 2008. 2001, 2006 and 2007 are the only years where both of the team’s drivers have finished in the points at Silverstone.
Charles Leclerc’s ninth place in qualifying in 2018 and Zhou Guanyu’s ninth place in 2022 are the only times in the last 12 Silverstone races that either of the former Sauber team’s cars have reached Q3 at the British Grand Prix. The team recorded double Q1 exits in 2016, 2017 and at both of 2020’s Silverstone races. Their best qualifying result here is fifth on the grid, scored by both Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
ASTON MARTIN
WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2022 RESULT: VETTEL 9th, STROLL 11th
In their first stint in the sport, Aston Martin made two appearances at the British Grand Prix. They appeared at Aintree in 1959 and at Silverstone in 1960. In the 1960 British Grand Prix, neither car qualified in the top ten. While Roy Salvadori retired, Maurice Trintignant finished in eleventh place, five laps behind the leader. It was the manufacturer’s final entry into F1 until 2021.
The Silverstone-based team have scored points in all but one of the last 11 F1 races held at their home track. In that time, Nico Hulkenberg’s failure to start in the 2020 British Grand Prix and Sebastian Vettel’s retirement in 2021 are the only times that their cars has failed to reach the chequered flag. The team have scored points with both cars in five of the last nine races at the circuit.
Historically, the team have a high DNF rate at Silverstone. Between 1991 and 2008, there were only four occasions on which both cars reached the finish line.
Since 2011, the 2019 and 2022 British Grands Prix are the only races at Silverstone in which neither of the team’s cars qualified in the top ten. At the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020, Nico Hulkenberg qualified in third place – the team’s best qualifying result at Silverstone since Heinz-Harald Frentzen lined up on the front row of the grid at the 2000 British Grand Prix.
In 2022, the team recorded their first double Q1 exit at Silverstone since they were under their Force India guise in 2009.
HAAS
WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2022 RESULT: SCHUMACHER 8th, MAGNUSSEN 10th
For the first time in their history, Haas scored with both cars at the British Grand Prix in 2022. Mick Schumacher recorded the team’s best result to date at the track with eighth place. Prior to 2022, Kevin Magnussen’s ninth place in 2018 was the only time that the team had scored at Silverstone.
Haas have recorded six retirements in their eight appearances at Silverstone. Their 2019 British Grand Prix ended in a disappointing double DNF following a collision between their two drivers. 2017, 2021 and 2022 are the only seasons in which both Haas drivers have reached the end of a race at Silverstone.
With their 16 entries, Haas have reached Q3 three times. While Romain Grosjean reached Q3 for Haas in 2017, 2018 marked the first time both Haas drivers reached the final part of qualifying at the circuit. Kevin Magnussen scored their best qualifying position at Silverstone to date with seventh on the grid in 2018. In 2019, Magnussen was eliminated in Q1 while Grosjean reached Q2. The team recorded their first double Q1 exit at the circuit in qualifying for the 2020 British Grand Prix and have recorded double Q1 exits on every visit since.
ALPHATAURI
WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2022 RESULT: TSUNODA 14th, GASLY DNF
2022 marked the first time that the Red Bull junior team did not score at Silverstone since the 2018 British Grand Prix. Pierre Gasly recorded the team’s best ever finishing position at the circuit in 2020 with seventh place in the British Grand Prix. Before that, the former Toro Rosso team’s best finishing place was eighth, achieved by Daniel Ricciardo in 2013 and by Carlos Sainz in 2016.
2014 and 2016 are the only seasons where both Toro Rosso drivers have scored points at Silverstone. The team have recorded double DNFs at the track in both 2007 and 2015.
There have been just eight occasions on which a Red Bull junior team driver has qualified in the top ten at Silverstone, with Daniel Ricciardo scoring the team’s best Silverstone qualifying result in 2013 with fifth on the grid. 2014 is the only season where both Toro Rosso drivers have reached the final part of qualifying, while both drivers were eliminated in Q1 in both 2009 and 2011.
Brendon Hartley recorded the team’s first Q1 exit since 2011 in 2018 when he was unable to partake in qualifying due to a heavy crash in Free Practice 3. Daniil Kvyat was also eliminated in Q1 at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, while Yuki Tsunoda was out in Q1 in 2021. Both drivers were eliminated in Q2 in 2022.
WILLIAMS
WINS: 8, POLES: 11, PODIUMS: 18 | 2022 RESULT: LATIFI 12th, ALBON DNF
Williams have taken eight victories at Silverstone and won all but one British Grand Prix between 1991 and 1997. While the team led the opening stages of the 2015 race, success at the track has been limited in recent seasons.
Valtteri Bottas’ second place here in 2014 is the team’s only British Grand Prix podium finish in the last 17 years. The team have scored only one point at the track in the last seven Silverstone races, with Felipe Massa finishing tenth in the 2017 event.
Williams have a good finish rate at the track, with Massa’s 2014 retirement and Alex Albon’s first lap crash in 2022 being the only times that their cars have failed to reach the end of a Silverstone race since 2006.
With 11 pole positions at Silverstone, Williams are second only to Ferrari in the list of most poles at the circuit. The team have locked out the front row of the grid here five times. Williams have had less success in qualifying at the track in recent years, with Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa locking-out the second row in 2015 being a rare highlight.
In 2019, the team recorded their third double-Q1 elimination at the track. It was somewhat of an improvement on their 2018 qualifying effort, where both Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin spun off the track and started from the pit-lane as a result of overnight changes to their cars.
In 2021, George Russell recorded the team’s first Q3 appearance at the track since 2016. He did not start in the top ten, however, following a first lap incident with Carlos Sainz in Sprint Qualifying. Nicholas Latifi also reached Q3 in a wet qualifying session at the track in 2022.
