Antonelli Becomes Youngest F1 Champion
Kimi Antonelli’s third place finish in the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix saw him become Formula 1’s youngest-ever World Champion. He is the 36th driver to have won the Drivers’ Championship.
At the age of 20, Antonelli breaks the record as the youngest World Champion by three years. The previous record belonged to Sebastian Vettel, who claimed his first title at the age of 23 at the 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Antonelli is the first driver born in the 2000s – and the first driver not born in the 1900s – to become World Champion.
Antonelli won the World Championship in only his 43rd Grand Prix. Only 12 drivers have won the title in fewer races from their first appearance. Lewis Hamilton and Jacques Villeneuve are the only drivers to have done so since Emerson Fittipaldi in 1972.
Antonelli is only the fifth driver in F1 history to win the title within his first two seasons in the sport. Juan Manuel Fangio, Jacques Villeneuve and Lewis Hamilton also won their first titles in their second season, while Giuseppe Farina was the inaugural World Champion in 1950.
Antonelli becomes the first Italian driver to win the Drivers’ Championship in 73 years. He is the third Italian World Champion, after Giuseppe Farina (1950) and Alberto Ascari (1952 & 1953).
This is the first time that three different drivers have won the title in three consecutive years since Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel did so in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
Antonelli is the fourth driver to win the Drivers’ Championship with Mercedes, after Juan Manuel Fangio (1954, 1955), Lewis Hamilton (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) and Nico Rosberg (2016). It is the team’s first Drivers’ Championship win since Hamilton took the honours in 2020.
Mercedes are the third constructor, after Ferrari and McLaren, to have won the Drivers’ Championship on as many as ten occasions.
Antonelli is the third driver to win the title on November 1, after Nelson Piquet in 1987 and Mika Hakkinen in 1998.
This is the sixth time that the Drivers’ Championship has been won in Mexico, with Antonelli becoming the fifth driver to win the title in the country, after John Surtees (1964), Denny Hulme (1967), Graham Hill (1968) and Lewis Hamilton (2017, 2018). Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez equals Interlagos for third on the list of circuits which have hosted the most title deciders.
