2022 Hungarian Grand Prix

George Russell became the 105th polesitter in World Championship history as he secured pole for the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix. He is the third driver to take his maiden pole at the Hungarian Grand Prix, after Thierry Boutsen in 1990 and Max Verstappen in 2019.

Russell’s pole saw Britain equal its own record for most consecutive seasons in which a nation has taken pole (19). British drivers last took pole in 19 consecutive seasons between 1955 and 1973!

With third place in the race, Russell recorded consecutive podium finishes for the first time in his career. Polesitter Russell lost two positions from where he started, making this the first race in which he has lost places since the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix.

After leading 24 laps of the race, Russell rose to third in the list of most laps led without a win. He has led 87 laps in total, behind Chris Amon (183) and Jean Behra (107) on the list.

2022 Italian Grand Prix

George Russell became the 97th different driver to finish on the podium at Monza and the 13th current driver to record a top three result at the venue. Russell became the first driver since Riccardo Patrese in 1990 to start second in Mexico and fail to finish on the podium. Fourth place marked Russell’s best result since his podium at the Italian Grand Prix. Having led five laps in Mexico, Russell has now led 92 laps in his career without winning a race. With this being the first time a British driver has won since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix was the first time that God Save The King was played on the Formula 1 podium. Russell became the 20th British driver to win a round of the World Championship.

On his way to victory, Russell set the fastest lap of the race. This is the third consecutive Grand Prix in which Russell set the fastest lap, making it the 33rd occasion that a driver has taken three fastest laps in a row. Russell’s fastest lap marked the 100th time that Mercedes have set the fastest lap in a Grand Prix. They are the fourth team to reach the milestone.

2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

George Russell qualified sixth, making it out of Q1 for the first time at Yas Marina Circuit. Russell finished fifth in the final race of the year. It ensured that he became only the third team-mate of Lewis Hamilton to out-score him over the course of a season. Jenson Button out-scored Hamilton by 43 points in 2011, Nico Rosberg out-scored Hamilton by five points in 2016 and Russell out-scored Hamilton by 35 points in 2022.
