RACE BY RACE: VALTTERI BOTTAS’ 2022 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2022 Bahrain Grand Prix

On his first appearance as an Alfa Romeo driver, Valtteri Bottas continued his record-breaking Q3 streak. This was the 102nd race in a row at which the Finn has qualified in the top ten. Ironically, Bottas out-qualified George Russell, the driver who replaced him at Mercedes. He recorded Alfa Romeo’s best qualifying result since Kimi Raikkonen qualified fifth at the 2019 German Grand Prix. Bottas went on to finish in sixth place; the team’s best result since the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix. Scoring eight points, Bottas becomes the fourth driver to have scored 100 points at Bahrain International Circuit. This was the tenth consecutive race at the track in which Bottas has scored.

2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas retired from the second race of the season for a second year in succession. Having scored eight points so far this year, it is – predictably – his worst start to a season since 2016.

2022 Australian Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas qualified in 12th place for the Australian Grand Prix, failing to reach Q3 for the first time since driving for Williams at the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It ended a record-breaking run of 103 consecutive Q3 appearances. His top ten qualifying streak was the third longest in F1 history, behind only Ayrton Senna (137) and Alain Prost (109). Bottas finished eighth in the race, becoming only the fifth driver to record 1,750 points in his career.

2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas finished in fifth place, recording Alfa Romeo’s best result since both drivers finished in the top five at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix.

2022 Miami Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas qualified in fifth place, recording his best qualifying result of the season to date. With seventh place in the Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas maintains his record of scoring points in every race which he has finished so far with Alfa Romeo.

2022 Spanish Grand Prix

Qualifying in seventh place for Alfa Romeo, Valtteri Bottas became the first driver for the former Sauber team to qualify in the top ten at the Spanish Grand Prix since both drivers reached Q3 in 2012. With sixth place in the race, Bottas recorded the former Sauber team’s best Spanish Grand Prix result since Kamui Kobayashi finished fifth in 2012.

2022 Monaco Grand Prix

Qualifying in 12th place, Valtteri Bottas failed to reach Q3 for only the second time in the last 108 races. It has now been over seven years since Bottas’ last Q1 exit, which occurred at the 2015 Monaco Grand Prix. This was the first time Bottas failed to reach Q3 in Monaco since 2016. The Finn finished in ninth place, becoming the first driver to score multiple points for the former Sauber team in Monaco since Felipe Nasr finished ninth in 2015.

2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

With 15th place, Valtteri Bottas recorded his worst qualifying result since qualifying 17th at the 2015 Monaco Grand Prix over seven years ago. This was the first time Bottas has failed to reach Q3 at Baku City Circuit. In the race, Bottas failed to score with Alfa Romeo for only the second time. This was the first time the Finn has finished a race in a position outside of the points since the 2021 Mexico City Grand Prix. Despite this, Bottas gained four positions in the race – equalling the most positions he has gained in a race so far this season. On Lap 49, Bottas became the third driver to have raced 300 laps at the circuit.

2022 Canadian Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas continued his strong points-scoring record in Montreal with seventh place in the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix. This was his worst finishing result in Canada since also finishing seventh in 2014. In qualifying, Bottas failed to reach Q3 in Canada for the first time.

2022 British Grand Prix

Having started every race since the 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas became the 13th driver to start 150 consecutive races. Max Verstappen achieved the same feat at the previous race. Bottas recorded his fourth Q2 exit of the 2022 season. This was the first time that Bottas failed to reach Q3 at Silverstone since the 2014 British Grand Prix.

2022 Austrian Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas was eliminated in Q2 for a fifth consecutive race. The Finn just missed out on points at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix. This is the second time this year he has finished a race in a position outside of the top ten. He also finished 11th at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. It was the first time Bottas has failed to score in Austria since his 2018 retirement.

2022 French Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas failed to reach Q3 at the French Grand Prix for the first time in his career. He also left the track without scoring a point for the first time.

2022 Hungarian Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas made it into Q3 for the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix, ending a streak of six consecutive Q2 eliminations. Qualifying eighth, this was the first time since 2017 that Bottas has not qualified on the front row at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Bottas recorded the former Sauber team’s best qualifying result in Hungary since Robert Kubica qualified fourth in 2008.

Bottas was the only driver who failed to reach the chequered flag at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix. This was his second retirement in the last four races and his third retirement of the 2022 season. This was Bottas’ second consecutive retirement in Hungary.

2022 Belgian Grand Prix

For the first time in his career, Valtteri Bottas set a lap time good enough for only the back row of the grid. This was the first time in over seven years that Bottas was eliminated in Q1. He was last out in Q1 at the 2015 Monaco Grand Prix, 148 races ago.

Bottas was out on the first lap of the race. This marked the first time that the Finn has failed to reach the chequered flag at the Belgian Grand Prix. Bottas’ retirement made this the sixth time in the last seven seasons that a driver for the former Sauber team failed to reach the chequered flag at the Belgian Grand Prix. This was the first time Bottas recorded retirements in successive races since the 2015 Russian and United States Grands Prix.

Racing on his 33rd birthday, Bottas made this the 28th occasion on which a driver failed to finish a Grand Prix on their birthday. It’s was the third time that a driver celebrating their 33rd birthday has retired, after Philippe Alliot at the 1986 German Grand Prix and Andrea de Cesaris at the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix.

2022 Dutch Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas was eliminated in Q1 for the second race in succession. It marked the first time since the 2013 Belgian and Italian Grands Prix that Bottas has recorded Q1 exits at consecutive races. This was Bottas’ 12th Q1 exit in his 194 qualifying appearances. Bottas was the second and final driver to retire from the Dutch Grand Prix. This was the third consecutive race from which the Finn has retired. It is the first time in his career that Bottas has failed to finish three successive races.

2022 Italian Grand Prix

Nicholas Latifi was out-qualified by his new team-mate and recorded his sixth successive Q1 elimination. With 16th place, Latifi recorded his best qualifying result since his Q3 appearance at the 2022 British Grand Prix. Latifi finished 15th in the races – his best result since finishing 12th at the British Grand Prix.

2022 Singapore Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas failed to make it out of Q1 in Singapore for the first time in his career. This was the Finn’s third Q1 elimination in the last four races. Bottas missed out on points in the race but, with 11th place, recorded his best result since the Austrian Grand Prix. This was the first time Bottas has failed to score in Singapore since 2016.

2022 Japanese Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas finished 15th, failing to score at the Japanese Grand Prix for the first time since his maiden season in 2013.

2022 United States Grand Prix

For the first time since the Hungarian Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas qualified in the top ten. In the race, Bottas recorded his sixth retirement of the year. This was the first time he’s failed to reach the finish line at the United States Grand Prix since 2015.

2022 Mexico City Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas ended the longest active point-less streak in Formula 1, scoring for the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix. With tenth place, the 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix was the 140th race in which Bottas scored. He equalled Rubens Barrichello as the driver to have scored in the ninth most races.

Bottas qualified in sixth place, recording his best qualifying result since setting the fifth fastest time in qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix. This was the first time Bottas reached Q3 at consecutive races since the Emilia Romagna, Miami and Spanish Grands Prix. Bottas recorded his team’s best-ever qualifying result in Mexico. The team had only reached Q3 in Mexico once previously, when both Charles Leclerc and Marcus Ericsson qualified in the top ten in 2018.

2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas recorded his first Q1 elimination at Interlagos. His previous worst qualifying position at the circuit was 13th place in 2013.
