RACE BY RACE: KEVIN MAGNUSSEN’S 2022 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2022 Bahrain Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen returned to Haas in place of Nikita Mazepin, making his 120th Formula 1 start. In his first race appearance since the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Magnussen qualified in the top ten for Haas, recording the team’s first Q3 appearance since the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix. Magnussen finished in fifth place. This was the first top five finish for a Haas driver since both Magnussen and Romain Grosjean finished in the top five at the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix.

2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen reached Q3 for the second consecutive race. That made it the first time since the 2019 Russian and Japanese Grands Prix that Haas recorded Q3 appearances at two consecutive races. Magnussen finished the race in ninth place, scoring points at consecutive races for the first time since his three race run of top ten finishes between the 2018 Brazilian Grand Prix and the 2019 Australian Grand Prix.

2022 Australian Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen finished fourteenth in the 2022 Australian Grand Prix, reaching the chequered flag at the Australian Grand Prix for the fourth time in his seven appearances.

2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen qualified in fourth place for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, recording the Haas team’s best-ever qualifying result and equalling his own personal best qualifying result. Magnussen went on to finish ninth in the Grand Prix, scoring Haas’ first ever points at the Imola circuit.

2022 Miami Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen pulled into the pits before reaching the finish line. As a result, he recorded his first non-finish since the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. The Miami Grand Prix is only the second race of the year at which he has not scored.

2022 Spanish Grand Prix

Following first lap contact with Lewis Hamilton, Kevin Magnussen finished only 17th in the Spanish Grand Prix. That’s his worst result to date at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

2022 Monaco Grand Prix

Having been eliminated in Q1 or reached Q3 at every race of the year until the Monaco Grand Prix, Kevin Magnussen recorded his first Q2 exit since the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix.

2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen became the fourth Ferrari-powered car to retire from the race, also recording his third retirement in the past four races. Magnussen recorded the first retirement from 16th on the grid at Baku City Circuit, while Charles Leclerc recorded the first retirement from pole. That means that second and eighth are now the only grid slots yet to record a DNF at the track.

2022 Canadian Grand Prix

This being his 129th qualifying appearance, Magnussen moved up to ninth, ahead of Adrian Sutil, on the all time list of most qualifications without a pole position. With his 128th start, Magnussen equalled Sutil for tenth in the list of most starts without a win. After being forced to pit for front wing damage near the start of the race, Kevin Magnussen fell 12 places down the order. That’s the most positions he has ever lost in a Grand Prix which he has finished. Magnussen became the first driver to fail to score having started from fifth on the grid in the 2022 season.

2022 British Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen equalled his worst qualifying result of the year to date with 17th place. It also equalled his worst qualifying result at Silverstone, having previously qualified 17th for the 2017 British Grand Prix and the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.

With Magnussen finishing tenth in the race – and Schumacher eighth – Haas scored points with both cars for the first time since the 2019 German Grand Prix. This was the first time Magnussen has scored, or even finished a race, at Silverstone since the 2018 British Grand Prix.

2022 Austrian Grand Prix

With eighth place, Magnussen recorded his second-best result of the season to date. This was Haas’ second-best combined result to date in Formula 1. It is beaten only by the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix, in which Romain Grosjean was fourth and Magnussen was fifth.

After reaching Q3 for the 40th time, Magnussen joined former team-mate Grosjean as only the second driver to have had 40+ Q1 eliminations, 40+ Q2 exits and 40+ Q3 appearances in his F1 career.

2022 French Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen reached Q3 for a second consecutive race. This was the first time he has qualified in the top ten at consecutive races since the start of the season. In the race, Magnussen failed to finish for the fourth time in the last eight races.

2022 Hungarian Grand Prix

With 16th place, Kevin Magnussen recorded his worst Hungarian Grand Prix result to date. It was the first time he has finished in a worse position than where he started at the Hungaroring.

2022 Belgian Grand Prix

With 18th place, Kevin Magnussen recorded his worst qualifying result of the 2022 season to date. Magnussen became only the sixth driver to record 50 Q1 exits in Formula 1. Competing in his 133rd Grand Prix, Kevin Magnussen moved ahead of Eddie Cheever to second in the list of most starts without leading a lap. Only Martin Brundle has appeared at more races without ever leading.

2022 Dutch Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen equalled his worst qualifying result of the season to date. This was the second consecutive weekend at which Magnussen has qualified 18th. Magnussen finished on the lead lap of the race, making this the first time since the British Grand Prix that the Haas driver has completed every lap.

2022 Italian Grand Prix

After recording his worst qualifying result of the season to date with 19th place, Kevin Magnussen finished the Italian Grand Prix in 16th place, This was the first time both Haas drivers have been classified in the Italian Grand Prix result since 2017.

2022 Singapore Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen made his 96th start with the Haas team, equalling Romain Grosjean as the driver to have started the most races with the American team. Magnussen reached Q3 in Singapore for the first time since 2014. This was only the second time that a Haas driver has reached Q3 at Marina Bay. Grosjean qualified eighth with the team in 2018.

2022 Japanese Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen made his 97th start with Haas at the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix. It saw him overtake Romain Grosjean as the driver to have made the most race appearances with the American team. Magnussen recorded his fourth Q1 exit in the last five races and made this the third time he has been out in Q1 from his six appearances at the Japanese Grand Prix. He finished the race in 14th place – his best Suzuka race result since 2017.

2022 United States Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen recorded his fifth Q1 exit in the last six races. It was his third Q1 exit from six United States Grand Prix appearances. Magnussen scored for the first time since the French Grand Prix, finishing the race in ninth place. It was the first time he has scored at the United States Grand Prix since his maiden season in 2014, when he finished eighth.

2022 Mexico City Grand Prix

For the first time in their history, Haas progressed into Q2 at the Mexico City Grand Prix. That was thanks to Kevin Magnussen, who set the 15th fastest time in Q1. He also set the 15th fastest time in Q2. In the Grand Prix, Magnussen equalled his worst Mexico result to date, finishing in 17th. He also finished 17th with Renault in 2016.

2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix

On his 100th race weekend with the Haas team, Kevin Magnussen secured the first pole position of his Formula 1 career. He became the 106th different driver to take pole position at a round of the World Championship. This was the first time Magnussen qualified inside the top three. His previous best qualifying result was fourth place, which he recorded at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix, the 2014 German Grand Prix and the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Magnussen’s pole made Denmark the 24th different nation to have had a polesitter. Denmark becomes one of only four to have taken a single pole, after Poland (Robert Kubica, 2008 Bahrain Grand Prix), Venezuela (Pastor Maldonado, 2012 Spanish Grand Prix) and Mexico (Sergio Perez, 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix).

Magnussen took pole position on his 142nd attempt. Only two drivers have taken more attempts to record their first pole and, incidentally, both have done so in 2022: Sergio Perez (216) and Carlos Sainz (151). Magnussen is the fourth driver to take their maiden pole position during the 2022 season, after Perez, Sainz and George Russell. 2022 is the first season since 1979 in which four different drivers have taken their maiden pole positions.

Magnussen was unable to keep the lead in the Sprint and started in eighth place. Nevertheless, Magnussen is one of only five drivers to have scored in all three sprint races in 2022, the others being the two Ferrari drivers and the two Red Bull drivers.

Sunday’s race was less successful as Magnussen recorded only the second first lap retirement of his career. The only other time he has been out on Lap 1 was at Interlagos in 2017. Magnussen joins David Coulthard as only the second driver to record multiple first lap retirements at Interlagos.

2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen recorded his first Q1 exit since the United States Grand Prix. Magnussen finished the race in 17th place, equalling his worst finishing position from races in which he has reached the chequered flag in 2022. This was Magnussen’s fourth 17th place finish of the year.
