2022 Hungarian Grand Prix: Post Race Statistics

Verstappen wins from tenth on the grid, Hamilton breaks a 67 year old record and Alonso becomes only the third driver to score points at the age of 41 this millennium. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix!

VERSTAPPEN WINS

Max Verstappen took victory from tenth on the grid at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix. With his 28th career victory, Verstappen moved ahead of Jackie Stewart to eighth in the all-time win list. He became the eighth driver to have recorded 70 podium finishes.

Verstappen is the 31st driver to have won a round of the World Championship from tenth or further back on the grid. This is the first race to be won from tenth since the 2021 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, in which Lewis Hamilton was victorious. It was the 12th race to be won from tenth on the grid.

This was Red Bull’s third victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix and their first since Daniel Ricciardo’s 2014 win.

Verstappen is the 19th different driver to have won the Hungarian Grand Prix since the event joined the calendar in 1986.

With Verstappen starting tenth and Lewis Hamilton seventh, this was only the fifth race to feature neither driver in the top six on the grid since Verstappen started in Formula 1 at the beginning of the 2015 season. The other races at which this has happened are the 2016 Chinese, Russian & European Grands Prix and the 2018 Bahrain Grand Prix.

This is the only the fourth time that the Hungarian Grand Prix has not been won from the front two rows of the grid. It’s the second year in succession that it has happened.

ON THE PODIUM

For a second race in succession, Max Verstappen won with Lewis Hamilton in second and George Russell third. This is the 14th time in F1 history that consecutive races have had identical podiums.

This was the 31st time that Verstappen and Hamilton have recorded a 1-2 result. They equal Hamilton and Nico Rosberg as the duo to have scored the most 1-2 results in Formula 1 history.

Both of the top two finishers started outside of the top six on the grid. This is the first time that has happened since the 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix.

With both Hamilton and Russell on the podium for the second race in a row, this is the first time Mercedes have seen both cars on the podium at consecutive races since the 2021 Portuguese and Spanish Grands Prix.

Lewis Hamilton led four laps of the Hungarian Grand Prix, taking his total number of laps led at the Hungaroring to 487. That sees him break Bill Vukovich’s 67 year old record of most laps led at a single circuit. Vukovich led 485 laps at Indianapolis Motor Speedway when the Indianapolis 500 was a round of the World Championship between 1950 and 1960.

Hamilton became the first driver to have finished as runner-up on 50 occasions in his Formula 1 career.

Hamilton’s second place sees him become the fourth driver to have a gap of 300 races between their first and last podium finishes. Fernando Alonso (355), Michael Schumacher (347) and Kimi Raikkonen (314) are the only other drivers with more than 300 races between their first and last podium results.

Along with Fernando Alonso, Hamilton extends the record for most points-scoring races in Hungary. This was the 15th time that both drivers have scored a point at the Hungaroring.

With third place, George Russell recorded consecutive podium finishes for the first time in his career.

Polesitter Russell lost two positions from where he started, making this the first race in which he has lost places since the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix.

Britain becomes the first nation to record 30 podium finishes at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

All three podium finishers, along with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, led a lap of the race. That makes the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix the seventh race in the V6 hybrid era to have had five leaders. The last to do so was the 2021 Italian Grand Prix.

IN THE POINTS

Finishing in fourth place, Carlos Sainz made this the seventh consecutive Hungarian Grand Prix in which he has scored points.

Sergio Perez finished in fifth place, making this the first time he has finished in a position outside of the top four positions at any of the last 15 races which he has completed. Despite that, fifth is Perez’s best-ever result at the Hungarian Grand Prix. His previous best result here was seventh, recorded in 2020.

Charles Leclerc finished in sixth place, recording his seventh non-podium result in the last eight races. Lewis Hamilton has now had more podium results in 2022 than Leclerc.

This was the first time that both Ferrari drivers have scored at the Hungarian Grand Prix since 2019.

Lando Norris finished in seventh place for a third consecutive race.

Finishing in eighth place two days after his 41st birthday, Fernando Alonso becomes only the eighth driver since 1970 to score points at the age of 41 or older. He is only the third driver to have done so this millennium, after Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen.

Alonso equals Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have reached the chequered flag on the most occasions at the Hungarian Grand Prix. This was the 16th time that the Spaniard has finished a race here. Alonso is now just five laps away from equalling Raikkonen’s record of most laps raced at the Hungaroring.

Alonso scored points for an eighth consecutive race, making this the first time he has scored at eight races in a row since the eight races between the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix and the 2018 Spanish Grand Prix. It is the ninth time in his career that he has scored at eight or more consecutive races.

This was Alonso’s 11th consecutive appearance at the Hungarian Grand Prix in which he has picked up points.

With Alonso eighth and Esteban Ocon ninth, both Alpine drivers scored at the Hungarian Grand Prix for a second year in a row.

Sebastian Vettel picked up a point with a tenth place finish. On his final Hungarian Grand Prix appearance, he became the seventh driver to have raced 1,000 laps at the Hungaroring.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

Alex Albon and Yuki Tsunoda both finished outside of the points at the Hungarian Grand Prix, meaning both lost their 100% points-scoring rate at the Hungaroring circuit. Antonio Pizzonia and Johnny Dumfries, who each made only a single appearance at the track, are now the only other drivers in that club.

Pierre Gasly gained eight places from his pit lane start to 12th. This is the first time Gasly has gained a position from where he started at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Neither Alex Albon nor Nicholas Latifi picked up a point at the Hungaroring, but they did help Williams become the first team to have raced 5,000 laps at the track.

With 16th place, Kevin Magnussen recorded his worst Hungarian Grand Prix result to date. It was the first time he has finished in a worse position than where he started at the Hungaroring.

THE ONLY RETIREE

Valtteri Bottas was the only driver who failed to reach the chequered flag at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix. This was his second retirement in the last four races and his third retirement of the 2022 season. This was Bottas’ second consecutive retirement in Hungary.

Bottas recorded only the second retirement for the former Sauber team in the last eight Hungarian Grands Prix. This was the team’s first DNF at the Hungaroring since Charles Leclerc retired in 2018.
