2022 British Grand Prix qualifying statistics

Sainz secures his first pole position, Stroll moves up the list of most Q1 exits and Latifi reaches Q3 for the first time in his career. Here are the facts and statistics from qualifying at the 2022 British Grand Prix!

SAINZ TAKES FIRST POLE

Carlos Sainz became Formula 1’s 104th polesitter in damp conditions in qualifying for the 2022 British Grand Prix.

Sainz took the 23rd pole position for a Spanish driver, becoming the only Spaniard other than Fernando Alonso to take pole. Spain becomes the 16th nation to have two different polesitters. This was the first pole for a Spanish driver since the 2012 German Grand Prix.

This was the first time Sainz has qualified in the top six at Silverstone. He is the 36th different driver to take pole position at the circuit.

Ferrari set a new record for most pole positions at Silverstone. This was their 12th pole at the circuit, overtaking Williams in the all-time list. This was Ferrari’s first pole at the track since 2012.

Carlos Sainz slots into second on the list of most qualifying appearances before a maiden pole position. This was Sainz’s 151st qualifying appearance. Only Sergio Perez has made more appearances before taking his first pole position.

Sainz becomes the first driver to secure his maiden pole position at Silverstone since Heikki Kovalainen in 2008.

THE TOP 10

Max Verstappen qualified in second place, recording his second successive front row start at Silverstone.

With third place, Charles Leclerc equalled his best qualifying result at Silverstone. He also qualified third here in 2019. This was the first time Leclerc has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the circuit.

Sergio Perez recorded his best qualifying result at Silverstone with fourth place. That beats his previous best result of seventh, which he recorded in both 2014 and 2017.

This was the first time since 2016 that both Red Bull drivers qualified in the top four at Silverstone.

For the first time since 2014, Lewis Hamilton failed to qualify on the front row at the British Grand Prix.

Lando Norris remains yet to be out-qualified by a team-mate at his home Grand Prix. He qualified sixth for the 2022 British Grand Prix.

For the second year in a row, Fernando Alonso qualified in seventh place for the British Grand Prix.

George Russell qualified in eighth place, which is one position better than where he qualified here with Williams last year. This was the first time that Russell has failed to out-qualify his team-mate at Silverstone.

Russell becomes the first Mercedes driver to qualify outside the top six at Silverstone since Nico Rosberg qualified 13th in 2012.

Zhou Guanyu recorded the best qualifying result of his career to date with ninth place. This was Zhou’s second consecutive Q3 appearances. He is the first driver to reach Q3 at Silverstone with the former Sauber team since Charles Leclerc in 2018.

Nicholas Latifi recorded the first Q3 appearance of his Formula 1 career, qualifying in tenth place. It ended a streak of 16 consecutive Q1 exits for the Canadian driver.

This was only the third non-Q1 exit of the year for the Williams team. It was the first time since the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that Latifi out-qualified his team-mate. 2022 is the second year in a row that a Williams driver has reached Q3 at Silverstone. This was Williams’ first Q3 appearance since the 2021 Russian Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris both retained their 100% Q3 appearance record at Silverstone, while Zhou Guanyu joined the group of drivers who’ve never failed to reach Q3 at the track. Jacques Villeneuve, Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher are the only other drivers to reach Q3 on every appearance at Silverstone since the qualifying system was introduced in 2006.

OUT IN Q2

Valtteri Bottas recorded his fourth Q2 exit of the 2022 season. This was the first time that Bottas failed to reach Q3 at Silverstone since the 2014 British Grand Prix.

Daniel Ricciardo failed to reach Q3 at Silverstone for the first time since 2017. Having suffered a mechanical problem that year, this is the first time the Australian has failed to reach Q3 at Silverstone on pace alone since 2012.

Esteban Ocon failed to reach Q3 at Silverstone for only the second time in his carer. He qualified 15th, which is his worst qualifying result at the track.

OUT IN Q1

Alex Albon made this the seventh consecutive race at Silverstone in which a Williams driver has been eliminated in Q1.

Lance Stroll recorded his fifth consecutive Q1 exit, qualifying on the back row for the fourth time this year. This was Lance Stroll’s 55th Q1 exit, equalling Adrian Sutil and Heikki Kovalainen for third on the list of most Q1 exits since the qualifying system was introduced in 2006.

Sebastian Vettel recorded his worst-ever Silverstone qualifying result. It was only the second time, after the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020, that Vettel has not reached Q3 at the track.

With both Stroll and Vettel equalling their worst qualifying results of the season, Aston Martin recorded their fifth double Q1 exit of the 2022 season. In the previous 13 races at Silverstone, the team had recorded only one Q1 exit at the track (Lance Stroll, in 2019). This was the team’s first double Q1 exit at their home event since 2009.

For the second time this season, Haas recorded a double Q1 exit. Kevin Magnussen equalled his worst qualifying result of the year to date with 17th place. It also equals his worst qualifying result at Silverstone, having also qualified 17th for the 2017 British Grand Prix and the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.
