2020 Emilia Romagna GP: Milestones and Records to Break

As Formula 1 races in Italy for the 100th time, Hamilton could equal the record of most wins with a single constructor while Magnussen and Norris are looking to end their point-less streaks. Here are the milestones and records which could be broken at the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix!

THE MILESTONES

This weekend marks the 1,030th World Championship race, the first running of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and the 28th World Championship race held at Imola.

On the day of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, it will be 5,306 days since the last Formula 1 race at Imola in 2006. That will make it the sixth longest gap between two races at a circuit in F1 history.

This will be the 100th Formula 1 race to have been held in Italy; the first country to reach the milestone. Read more: Countries Which Have Hosted the Most F1 Races.

This will be the third Formula 1 race to be held in Italy in 2020, after the Italian Grand Prix and the Tuscan Grand Prix. It’s only the second time that a country has hosted three races in a single season. The only other country to do so was the United States, in 1982. This will be the first F1 race held at Imola since 1991 to not feature Michael Schumacher on the grid, as well as the first since 1992 which Rubens Barrichello has not entered.

At the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Imola will become only the second circuit – after the Nurburgring – to have hosted World Championship F1 events with three different titles. The circuit previously hosted the Italian Grand Prix in 1980 and the San Marino Grand Prix from 1981 to 2006. Read more: Circuits Which Hosted F1 Events With Different Titles.

This weekend, Sebastian Vettel will overtake Jarno Trulli as the driver to have started the ninth most F1 races in F1 history. This will be Vettel’s 253rd appearance. Trulli made 252 starts in his career, with his last appearance coming at the 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix.

This weekend marks Red Bull’s 300th appearance at a Formula 1 race since they first entered at the 2005 Australian Grand Prix. However, it will be their 299th start due to neither car starting the 2005 United States Grand Prix.

THE RECORDS TO BREAK

If they score eleven points at the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Mercedes will be crowned Constructors’ Champions. It would be the first time that a team have won seven consecutive titles, and the first time that the Constructors’ Championship has been decided at Imola since 1980. Having broken Michael Schumacher’s record of most F1 victories last weekend, Lewis Hamilton could equal Schumacher’s record of most wins with a single constructor. Schumacher won 72 times with Ferrari, while Hamilton has won 71 times so far with Mercedes. Next on the list is Sebastian Vettel, who won 38 times with Red Bull.

Kimi Raikkonen is the only driver on the 2020 grid to have previously raced at Imola in Formula 1. Should anyone but Raikkonen take pole for the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, they would be the thirteenth driver to have taken pole at this circuit. Meanwhile, unless Raikkonen finishes in the top three, this weekend’s podium finishers will be the 34th, 35th and 36th different drivers to have finished on the podium at this circuit.

Whoever wins this weekend will become the fifteenth driver to have won a World Championship Formula 1 race at Imola. A win for Lewis Hamilton will see him extend his record of most circuits won at to 29.

Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen finished in the top three together for the twelfth time at the 2020 Portuguese Grand Prix. If they do so again this weekend, they’ll become the equal second most common podium trio in F1 history, tying with Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber.

A podium finish for McLaren would see them become only the second team, after Ferrari, to have taken twenty top three finishes at Imola.

Renault and Ferrari are currently tied as the most successful engine manufacturers at Imola, with eight wins apiece. A win for either engine would see them take the outright record.

If either of their drivers score a point, the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix will be the 200th race in which a Mercedes driver has scored. Mercedes will be only the seventh team to reach that milestone.

If Valtteri Bottas reaches Q3 this weekend, it will be the 75th consecutive race in which he has done so. He will be the first driver to reach that milestone.

A top six for Carlos Sainz at the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix would mark only the second time in his career that he has finished in the top six at three consecutive races. He previously did so at the 2019 British, German and Hungarian Grands Prix. Meanwhile, if Lando Norris fails to score, it will be the first time he has failed to pick up points in four successive events.

Kevin Magnussen has not scored since the Hungarian Grand Prix. If he fails to score this weekend, he will equal the longest point-less streak of his Formula 1 career. It would be the tenth successive race in which he has failed to pick up a point. He also failed to score at ten races in a row between the 2016 Spanish and Italian Grands Prix.
