2023 United States Grand Prix: Post Race Statistics

Verstappen takes his 50th victory, Sargeant is the first American to score a point in over 30 years and both Hamilton and Leclerc are disqualified from the final result. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2023 United States Grand Prix!

VERSTAPPEN TAKES 50th VICTORY AT THE 2023 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen became the fifth driver in Formula 1 history to record 50 victories with his win at the 2023 United States Grand Prix. Verstappen is the second driver to record his 50th win at Circuit of The Americas – Lewis Hamilton achieved the same feat at the track back in 2016.

Verstappen achieved his 50th victory on his 181st start – the second fewest starts in which a driver has amassed 50 wins. Michael Schumacher achieved his 50th win on his 154th race start.

Verstappen recorded his 15th victory of the 2023 season, equalling his own record from last year of most wins in a single season.

Verstappen became the second driver, after Lewis Hamilton, to record three consecutive wins at Circuit of The Americas.

This was Red Bull’s fourth victory at the United States Grand Prix.

With the polesitter disqualified, Verstappen’s winning grid slot – sixth – is the only one to have scored points in every Grand Prix in 2023. This season is the first since 2014 in which the driver starting here has won twice.

This was the first time that the United States Grand Prix at COTA was won by a driver who did not start on the front row of the grid.

HAMILTON AND LECLERC DISQUALIFIED

After failing post-race scrutineering checks, both Lewis Hamilton – who had finished second – and Charles Leclerc – who had finished sixth – were disqualified from the 2023 United States Grand Prix.

While this was Leclerc’s first disqualification, it was Lewis Hamilton’s second – his first since the 2009 Australian Grand Prix. Hamilton became the 28th driver to record multiple disqualifications in Formula 1. Daniel Ricciardo is the only other current driver to have done so, having been disqualified at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix and the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix.

Leclerc became the first polesitter to be disqualified from a Formula 1 race since Ralf Schumacher at the 2004 Canadian Grand Prix. It was the sixth time this has occurred in F1 history.

Leclerc recorded the tenth disqualification for Ferrari in their Formula 1 history. It was the team’s first DSQ since Felipe Massa was disqualified from the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix.

Hamilton recorded the first DSQ for the Mercedes team in their history in Formula 1. It was the first DSQ for the Brackley-based team since the 2008 Australian Grand Prix, under their Honda guise, when Rubens Barrichello was black-flagged.

Hamilton led six laps of the 2023 United States Grand Prix, meaning that the 2013 race at Circuit of The Americas remains the only race at the venue in which Hamilton did not lead a lap.

Hamilton also maintained his record of being the only driver to complete every racing lap held at the Texas track. Sunday’s race saw the total number of Grand Prix laps raced at COTA exceed 600.

This marked the first time Hamilton failed to score at consecutive races since the 2010 Italian and Singapore Grands Prix.

ON THE PODIUM AT COTA

As a result of Hamilton’s disqualification, Lando Norris was promoted from third to second in the final order, while Carlos Sainz retrospectively finished on the podium.

Norris became the first McLaren driver to record four consecutive podium finishes since Jenson Button did so between the 2011 Indian Grand Prix and the 2012 Australian Grand Prix. This is the first time the team has scored four consecutive podium results since the 2012 Hungarian, Belgian, Italian and Singapore Grands Prix.

Norris recorded McLaren’s first podium finish at COTA since Lewis Hamilton won the inaugural race with the team in 2012. It was the first podium for a team other than Mercedes, Red Bull or Ferrari at the track since 2013.

Norris is now one 2nd or 3rd place finish away from equalling Nick Heidfeld as the driver to have taken the most Formula 1 podium finishes without winning a Grand Prix.

Norris’ podium finish made Britain the first nation to reach ten podium finishes at COTA.

With his disqualification, Lewis Hamilton lost his 100% points-scoring record at COTA. Norris maintained his and is now one of three drivers with a 100% points rate at the track, along with Bruno Senna and Logan Sargeant.

Carlos Sainz recorded the 18th podium finish of his career, finishing in the top three for the third time in the last five races.

Sainz is the first driver to record a podium finish from fourth on the grid at Circuit of The Americas.

This was both Norris’ and Sainz’s first top five finishes at the United States Grand Prix.

SARGEANT SCORES AT HOME

Logan Sargeant originally finished 12th in the order at the 2023 United States Grand Prix, before post race disqualifications bumped him up to tenth and saw him score the first point of his Formula 1 career.

Sargeant became the first American driver to score a point since Michael Andretti finished on the podium at the 1993 Italian Grand Prix. 10th is the best finish for an American since Scott Speed finished ninth at the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix, before ninth was a points-paying position.

Sargeant is the first American driver to score a point on home soil since Eddie Cheever, who finished third in the 1989 United States Grand Prix which was held at

After being stuck on 998 points for 30 years, the United States is now just a single point away from scoring 1,000 total points in Formula 1.

IN THE POINTS

Sergio Perez finished fourth in the 2023 United States Grand Prix – his best result since finishing on the podium at the Italian Grand Prix.

With Verstappen and Perez both scoring points, Red Bull set a new personal best for their longest scoring streak in Formula 1. The 2023 United States Grand Prix was the 39th consecutive race in which they scored.

As Hamilton was disqualified from the race, Perez equalled his record of ten classified finishes at the Austin circuit.

George Russell recorded a top five result in a Grand Prix for the first time since the British Grand Prix in early July.

With Hamilton disqualified and Russell fifth, this was the first United States Grand Prix since 2013 in which Mercedes did not finish on the podium.

Securing fifth place, George Russell picked up points for Mercedes in the 2023 United States Grand Prix, making it the 56th consecutive Grand Prix in which the team has scored. It’s the fourth-longest points streak for a team in F1 history.

Both Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll scored their first points at the United States Grand Prix, having never previously finished in the top ten at the event.

Lance Stroll finished seventh at the 2023 United States Grand Prix, recording his best result since finishing sixth at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Stroll recorded the Silverstone-based team’s best result at the United States Grand Prix since 2017.

Having started from the pit lane, Stroll gained 13 positions over the course of the 2023 United States Grand Prix. It’s the most positions he’s ever made up in a race, overtaking his former record of 11 places gained in the 2019 German Grand Prix.

Yuki Tsunoda finished eighth at the 2023 United States Grand Prix, recording his best result since his seventh place finish at the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It marked AlphaTauri’s best result of the season to date.

Tsunoda set the fastest lap for the first time in his Formula 1 career at the 2023 United States Grand Prix. This was the third fastest lap set by a Japanese driver in Formula 1, after Satoru Nakajima at the 1989 Australian Grand Prix and Kamui Kobayashi at the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix.

Tsunoda recorded the Red Bull junior team’s best United States Grand Prix result since Carlos Sainz finished sixth for Toro Rosso in 2016.

With Alex Albon ninth and Logan Sargeant tenth, Williams recorded their first double points finish since the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.

This was Williams’ first double top ten finish at the United States Grand Prix since both drivers finished in the top five in 2014.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

With 11th place, Nico Hulkenberg recorded his best Sunday result since he last scored points at the Australian Grand Prix. This was only the second top 11 result for Haas in the last 13 Grands Prix.

Having failed to lead a lap, Kevin Magnussen overtook Martin Brundle as the driver to have started the most Grands Prix without lead a lap in any of them.

This was the fifth time in seven visits to COTA that Haas have left their home event without scoring any points.

THE RETIREES

Esteban Ocon was the first driver to retire from the 2023 United States Grand Prix. Retiring with damage to his sidepod, this was the Alpine driver’s seventh retirement of the season.

Oscar Piastri recorded the third DNF of his rookie season at the 2023 United States Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso recorded his first retirement of the season at the 2023 United States Grand Prix. It marked the fourth time in his last five appearances at Circuit of The Americas that the Spaniard has failed to finish the race. Alonso equalled Nico Hulkenberg as the driver who has recorded the most retirements at the Texas track.

Four drivers started the 2023 United States Grand Prix from the pit lane – making it the first race since the 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix that four drivers started in the pit lane. With only 16 drivers on the grid, it was the fewest number of grid starters since 15 drivers lined up on the grid at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix.
