Verstappen wins on three consecutive weekends for the second time, Sainz records the best result from 18th in almost four years and Alonso sets more longevity records. Here’s a statistic from each driver’s 2022 Italian Grand Prix weekend.
🇳🇱 Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen became the ninth Formula 1 driver to win five consecutive races with his victory at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix. This was the 31st victory of Verstappen’s career, equalling Nigel Mansell for seventh in the all-time list of most F1 wins. Taking his team’s first podium finish here since 2013, Verstappen became the first driver to win from seventh on the grid since Kimi Raikkonen at the 2013 Australian Grand Prix. It is the seventh different grid slot from which Verstappen has won so far this season.
Monza becomes the 30th different circuit at which Verstappen has finished on the podium. Lewis Hamilton (35) and Kimi Raikkonen (30) are the only other drivers to have finished in the top three at 30 different tracks. Verstappen also becomes the fifth driver to have won at 20 different circuits during his Formula 1 career, after Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel.
Only one driver has won three Formula 1 races on three consecutive weekends – and he has now done it twice. Verstappen won all three races in a triple header for the second time, having last done so at the 2021 French, Styrian and Austrian Grands Prix.
🇲🇽 Sergio Perez
After qualifying fourth and equalling his best-ever Italian Grand Prix qualifying result, Sergio Perez dropped to 13th on the grid before finishing sixth. That made 2022 the ninth consecutive season in which he has picked up points at the Italian Grand Prix. Perez recorded the best result for a driver starting 13th at the Italian Grand Prix since Alexander Wurz finished fifth in 2000.
🇬🇧 Lewis Hamilton
This was the first time that Hamilton started a race from the back row of the grid since the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix. Hamilton gained 14 positions over the course of the race – the most he has gained since the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix, in which he moved up 16 positions from his starting spot. Hamilton made this the third time in the last four Monza races that the driver starting 19th has picked up points. Finishing in fifth place, he became the first driver to have scored 200 points at the Monza circuit, despite not finishing on the podium at any of the last three Monza races.
🇬🇧 George Russell
George Russell became the 97th different driver to finish on the podium at Monza and the 13th current driver to record a top three result at the venue. With Russell, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris all scoring points at the Italian Grand Prix, it was the 88th consecutive race at which a British driver has scored. The 2018 Austrian Grand Prix was the last race in which no British drivers picked up a point. It equals the third longest consecutive scoring streak for a country in Formula 1.
🇲🇨 Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc took pole position for the 2022 Italian Grand Prix, recording the 17th pole of his Formula 1 career. He equalled Jackie Stewart and Max Verstappen for 19th in the all-time list of most poles. This was Leclerc’s eighth pole of the 2022 season, becoming the first Ferrari driver to take eight poles in a single season since Michael Schumacher in 2004. Aside from Leclerc and Schumacher – the latter achieving the feat in 2000, 2001 and 2004 – Niki Lauda is the only other Ferrari driver to take eight or more poles in a year. He did so in 1974 and 1975.
Leclerc also became the fifth Ferrari driver to have taken multiple pole positions in Italy, after Alberto Ascari (1952 & 1953), Jacky Ickx (1970 & 1972), Niki Lauda (1974 & 1975) and Michael Schumacher (1998, 2000 & 2003).
Leclerc failed to convert his pole into a win, but did record consecutive podium finishes for the first time since the first three races of the season. He became the 52nd driver to record 20 podium finishes in Formula 1, equalling the career totals of Giuseppe Farina and John Watson.
🇪🇸 Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz qualified in the top three for the fourth consecutive race, recording the longest streak of top three qualifications in his career to date. As a result of a power unit penalty, Sainz dropped to 18th on the final grid but recovered to finish fourth. Sainz became the first driver to finish in the top four having started from 18th on the grid since Max Verstappen finished on the podium at the 2018 United States Grand Prix.
🇦🇺 Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo was the final driver to retire from the Italian Grand Prix. This marked his first DNF since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. As a result of Ricciardo’s stoppage, the 2022 Italian Grand Prix became the tenth Formula 1 race to finish under Safety Car conditions. This was the third year in a row that the driver who won the previous year’s Italian Grand Prix retired from the event one year after their win.
🇬🇧 Lando Norris
Lando Norris finished in seventh place for the fifth time in the last six races, maintaining his 100% points-scoring record at Monza. Scoring six points, Norris moved ahead of Romain Grosjean in the list of most points without a victory. Norris has now scored 394 points in his career. Only Nico Hulkenberg has scored more points without ever taking a win.
🇪🇸 Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso made his 349th race start at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix, equalling Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have started the most races in F1 history. Alonso also equalled Rubens Barrichello’s record of 19 appearances at Monza.
Recording his 191st Q3 appearance, Fernando Alonso equalled Raikkonen for third in the list of most Q3 appearances since the knockout qualifying system was introduced in 2006. This was the first time Alonso has reached Q3 at Monza since the 2014 Italian Grand Prix.
Failing to finish a race the first time since the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Alonso’s 10-race scoring streak came to an end. This was Alonso’s fifth retirement from his last seven Italian Grand Prix appearances.
🇫🇷 Esteban Ocon
Esteban Ocon failed to pick up a point for the first time since the British Grand Prix. This was only the second time Ocon has raced at Monza in F1 and failed to score. The only other time he did so was with Manor in 2016.
🇫🇷 Pierre Gasly
On the weekend that Pierre Gasly overtook Daniil Kvyat as the driver to have made the most starts with the Red Bull junior team, the Frenchman reached Q3 for the first time since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, ending the longest Q3 drought of his career to date. With ninth place, Gasly equalled his team’s best Italian Grand Prix qualifying result in the last nine seasons. The other ninth place for the team in the last nine seasons was recorded by Gasly, in 2018. Gasly finished the race in eighth – his best result since the Baku race.
🇯🇵 Yuki Tsunoda
Finishing 14th, Yuki Tsunoda failed to score for a tenth consecutive race – the longest point-less streak of his career.
🇩🇪 Sebastian Vettel
After being eliminated in Q1 at Monza for only the second time in his career, Sebastian Vettel was the first driver to retire from the 2022 Italian Grand Prix. He recorded his first non-finish since the Miami Grand Prix. This was his third retirement of the year and his third at the Monza circuit.
🇨🇦 Lance Stroll
For the first time in his career, Lance Stroll was eliminated in Q1 at the Italian Grand Prix. Things did not improve on Sunday as Stroll failed to finish for only the second time this season. This was the first time Stroll has failed to finish in the top twelve at the Italian Grand Prix.
🇹🇭 Alex Albon
Alex Albon was forced to sit out the Italian Grand Prix after being diagnosed with appendicitis on Saturday morning. He became the first Williams driver to be replaced during a Grand Prix weekend since Felipe Massa at the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix.
🇳🇱 Nyck de Vries
Nyck de Vries made his Formula 1 debut at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix, replacing an unwell Alex Albon. De Vries became the first driver to race in car number 45 since Andre Lotterer, who made a one-off appearance at the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix. He was the first driver to debut at Monza since Alex Yoong and Tomas Enge did so in 2001.
De Vries qualified in 13th place on his qualifying debut. That was the best qualifying result for a Williams driver at the Italian Grand Prix since both drivers qualified in the top 12 in 2018. As a result of grid penalties, he moved up to eighth on the final grid, becoming the first driver to start in the top eight on his debut since Lando Norris at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix. He is only the seventh driver to do so this millennium.
Finishing ninth, de Vries became the third driver to score the first points of his career in 2022. He became the 78th driver to score points on his maiden World Championship appearance. This was the first Formula 1 race in history at which multiple Dutch drivers scored points. It was also the first F1 race at which multiple Dutch drivers have crossed the finish line since the 2006 Brazilian Grand Prix.
🇨🇦 Nicholas Latifi
Nicholas Latifi was out-qualified by his new team-mate and recorded his sixth successive Q1 elimination. With 16th place, Latifi recorded his best qualifying result since his Q3 appearance at the 2022 British Grand Prix. Latifi finished 15th in the races – his best result since finishing 12th at the British Grand Prix.
🇫🇮 Valtteri Bottas
Valtteri Bottas had a little more luck than he has done recently at the Italian Grand Prix. He made it through to Q2 for the first time in three races and finished the race following a streak of three consecutive retirements. It was the first time Bottas failed to qualify and finish in the top six at the Italian Grand Prix since his maiden season in 2013.
🇨🇳 Zhou Guanyu
With tenth place, Zhou Guanyu picked up points for the third time in his career. It was the first time he or the Alfa Romeo team has scored since the Canadian Grand Prix. Along with Nyck de Vries, Zhou joined a small group of drivers who have scored on every outing at Monza. Lando Norris is the only other current driver in that group.
🇩🇪 Mick Schumacher
Mick Schumacher qualified last for the Italian Grand Prix, marking his worst qualifying result of the season to date. Haas are still yet to pick up any points at the Italian Grand Prix, but Mick Schumacher made this the third time a Haas driver has finished in the top 12 at the event.
🇩🇰 Kevin Magnussen
After recording his worst qualifying result of the season to date with 19th place, Kevin Magnussen finished the Italian Grand Prix in 16th place, This was the first time both Haas drivers have been classified in the Italian Grand Prix result since 2017.
