F1 Driver Form: Dutch Grand Prix

Verstappen has won all three races at Zandvoort since F1’s 2021 return, seven drivers have scored in all of the last three races at the circuit and most of the grid had pre-Formula 1 experience at the track. Here’s everything you need to know about each driver’s history at the Dutch Grand Prix.

🇳🇱 Max VERSTAPPEN

Max Verstappen has delighted his home fans at every Dutch Grand Prix since the event’s return in 2021, winning all three races from pole position. In 2021, he became the first Dutch driver to win his home Grand Prix.

Prior to F1, Verstappen won the Masters of F3 event at Zandvoort in 2014, having qualified in pole position. You can expect the partisan crowd to be willing him on to do the same at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix.

🇲🇽 Sergio PEREZ

Sergio Perez was disappointingly knocked out in Q1 at the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix. He fought back to eighth place in the race. He reached Q3 in 2022, qualifying four positions behind his team-mate in fifth place. He finished the race in the same position as where he started.

After qualifying seventh, Perez perfectly timed his first pit stop for intermediates in the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix and led the opening stages before being overtaken by his team-mate. Misdemeanours later in the race – including picking up a time penalty for speeding in the pit lane – cost him a podium finish and he finished in fourth place.

Perez previously raced at Zandvoort in the Formula BMW ADAC series in 2005 and 2006. He was successful at the two races at the circuit in 2006, finishing in fifth and third.

🇬🇧 Lewis HAMILTON

Lewis Hamilton suffered a power failure in Free Practice 2 at the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix, putting him out of the Friday afternoon session. He went on to qualify on the front row and finish as runner-up to Max Verstappen.

In 2022, Hamilton recorded another top five result, this time finishing just off the podium in fourth place. He finished the race where he started, having qualified two positions ahead of team-mate George Russell.

Hamilton recorded his worst Zandvoort result to date in 2023 but still finished in the top six. He missed out on a spot in Q3 at the track for the first time, setting only the 13th quickest lap time in Q2.

Prior to 2021, Hamilton last raced at Zandvoort in 2005, when he won the Masters of F3 race. He finished six seconds ahead of Adrian Sutil. He had finished seventh in the previous year’s event. Hamilton also raced here in the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2004 and 2005. He finished on the podium in the first of the two races at the 2004 meeting, and won the second race in 2005.

🇬🇧 George RUSSELL

George Russell crashed out of qualifying in Q2 at the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix. Nevertheless, he qualified in 11th place in the Williams. He failed to finish the race, retiring with gearbox issues just three laps from the end of the Grand Prix.

In 2022, Russell qualified sixth for the Dutch Grand Prix and finished as runner-up in the race, scoring his first points and first podium finish at the circuit. After lining up third on the grid in 2023, Russell suffered a luck-less race in which he was late to switch to intermediate tyres and suffered a puncture as a result of minor contact with Lando Norris, dropping him to 17th by the end of the race.

Before his F1 career began, Russell raced at Zandvoort in F3 in 2015 and 2016. He finished in the top six in all three races in 2015, and finished in the top ten in all of 2016’s three races. Russell also took part in the Masters of F3 race in 2015, in which he finished as runner-up to Antonio Giovinazzi.

🇲🇨 Charles LECLERC

Charles Leclerc finished where he started at Zandvoort in 2021, in fifth place. In 2022, he qualified on the front row but lost a position in the race to George Russell and finished on the final step of the podium.

Leclerc’s 100% points-scoring record came to an end at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix. He started ninth after crashing out in the final part of qualifying and suffered damage at the start in a collision with Oscar Piastri. The damage meant he was uncompetitive for much of the race and retired after 42 laps.

Leclerc previously contested three races at Zandvoort in the 2015 Formula 3 European Championship. He finished a best of fifth in the first race of the meeting. He retired from the second race after a big crash following contact with Lance Stroll. Though he was cleared to race, there was concern that his car would not be able to be fixed in time for the next day’s final race. In the end it was, and he finished tenth.
