Mercedes have won seven of the last eight British Grands Prix and have taken pole in all of the last eight years, while Red Bull and Ferrari are the only other teams to win here since 2009. Here’s everything you need to know about each team’s history at Silverstone!

Mercedes have won seven of the last eight British Grands Prix. Last year’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix was only the second Silverstone race since 2013 that Mercedes have not won. Their streak of five consecutive wins was ended in 2018 by Ferrari, but Lewis Hamilton returned to the top spot in 2019 as the team took their third 1-2 finish at Silverstone. Mercedes have never left Silverstone without scoring a point, including in their only appearance here in their first stint in the sport, in which Juan Manuel Fangio finished fourth. Nico Rosberg’s retirement as a result of a gearbox failure in 2014 remains Mercedes’ only retirement at the Silverstone circuit, while Valtteri Bottas’ eleventh place in the 2020 British Grand Prix – a result of a late race puncture – is the only time a Mercedes car has not finished in the top four since then. Bottas’ retirement in 2020 and his fourth place finish in 2018 are the only occasions in the last seven Silverstone races that a Mercedes driver has failed to finish on the podium at the event.
Mercedes have taken pole position at all of the last nine Silverstone races, locking out the front row on six occasions – including in both of 2020’s races at the track. The team also locked-out the front row in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2019. Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg’s thirteenth places in qualifying here in 2011 and 2012 are the only occasions in Mercedes’ twelve appearances at the circuit since 2010 on which one of their drivers have failed to qualify in the top ten. In their first stint in F1, Mercedes took pole at the 1954 British Grand Prix.
In 2020, Max Verstappen recorded Red Bull’s first win at Silverstone in eight years with victory in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. It was the team’s fourth win at the circuit. Sebastian Vettel won in 2009 and Mark Webber won in 2010 and 2012. Their 1-2 finish in 2009 marked the first time Red Bull had scored points at the track, and they went on to finish on the podium with at least one car in all of the next six seasons. Since 2014, other than their win, the team have recorded just two podium finishes here. Both were courtesy of Verstappen with second places in the 2016 and 2020 British Grands Prix. Verstappen’s late race retirement in 2018 is the only time in the last six Silverstone races that a Red Bull driver has failed to finish in the top ten at the circuit.
Red Bull have taken three pole positions at Silverstone, and locked out the front row in both 2010 and 2011. The team have had only two front row starts since then. Since 2009, Daniel Ricciardo’s Q1 exit in 2017, the result of a turbo failure, and Alex Albon’s Q2 exit at the 2020 British Grand Prix are the only times a Red Bull driver has not reached Q3 at the track.

McLaren have won at Silverstone on twelve occasions, but haven’t finished on the podium at the British Grand Prix since 2010. Between 1985 and 2001, the 1996 and 2000 events were the only ones in which both McLaren cars reached the end of the race, the latter being the team’s only 1-2 finish at the track. In all of the last four races at the track, one McLaren driver has scored with the other finishing outside of the points. Lando Norris’ fifth place in the 2020 British Grand Prix was the team’s best result at the track since 2014. 2014 was the last time both McLaren drivers finished in the points at Silverstone.
McLaren have taken nine pole positions at Silverstone, most recently in 2008, and locked-out the front row in 1989. In the last thirteen Silverstone races, the 2011, 2014 and 2020 British Grands Prix are the only occasions on which both McLaren drivers have qualified in the top ten, while 2015 marks their only double Q1 exit at the circuit. 1983, 2009 and 2018 are the only other occasions aside from 2015 on which neither McLaren driver has qualified in the top ten at Silverstone.
In their first stint in the sport, Aston Martin made two appearances at the British Grand Prix. They appeared at Aintree in 1959 and at Silverstone in 1960. In the 1960 British Grand Prix, neither car qualified in the top ten. While Roy Salvadori retired, Maurice Trintignant finished in eleventh place, five laps behind the leader. It was the team’s final entry into F1 until 2021.
The Silverstone-based team have scored points in all but one of the last nine F1 races held at their home track. In that time, Nico Hulkenberg’s failure to start in the 2020 British Grand Prix is the only time that one of their cars has failed to reach the chequered flag. The team have scored points with both cars in five of the last seven races at the circuit. Historically, the team have a high DNF rate at Silverstone. Between 1991 and 2008, there were only four occasions on which both cars reached the finish line.
Since 2011, the 2019 British Grand Prix is the only race at Silverstone in which neither of the team’s cars has qualified in the top ten. At last year’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, Nico Hulkenberg qualified in third place – the team’s best qualifying result at Silverstone since Heinz-Harald Frentzen lined up on the front row of the grid at the 2000 British Grand Prix.

The Enstone-based team have won the British Grand Prix twice. Johnny Herbert recorded his maiden victory for Benetton at Silverstone in 1995, while Fernando Alonso won for Renault in 2006. The team has recorded a further nine podium finishes at the circuit – including double podium finishes in 1993 and 1997. Alonso’s 2006 win remains their most recent top three finish at the circuit. Under their most recent Renault reincarnation, the team has scored in all of the last five Silverstone races. Both cars finished in the points at both the 2019 and 2020 British Grands Prix. Between 2013 and 2018, the team recorded eight non-finishes at the track.
Team Enstone recorded two pole positions at Silverstone under their Renault guise in 2005 and 2006 and have recorded a further three front row starts – two of those being as Benetton back in 1994 and 1995. With fifth place in qualifying for the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo recorded the team’s best qualifying result at Silverstone since Fernando Alonso’s 2006 pole position. The 2019 British Grand Prix marked the team’s first double Q3 appearance at the circuit since 2013.
Ferrari have been present in every Formula 1 race at Silverstone, aside from the inaugural race in 1950. With fourteen wins here, Ferrari have taken more victories at Silverstone than any other team. The team won the British Grand Prix for the first time since 2011 with Sebastian Vettel in 2018. The team have scored podium finishes in eight of the last ten races at the circuit, while Kimi Raikkonen’s third place in 2018 along with Vettel’s win gave Ferrari their first double podium appearance at Silverstone since 2004. Since 2000, Raikkonen’s crash in 2014 is the only occasion on which a Ferrari driver has failed to finish the British Grand Prix, as well as one of only six occasions on which one of the team’s cars has failed to pick up points at the event in the last twenty Silverstone races. Vettel’s sixteenth place in 2019, after he crashed into the back of Max Verstappen, is the worst finishing position for a Ferrari car which has not failed to finish at the circuit.
Ferrari have taken pole position at Silverstone on eleven occasions, most recently with Fernando Alonso in 2012. The team recorded front row starts in both 2017 and 2018. There have been just four seasons on which neither Ferrari driver has qualified in the top ten at Silverstone. This happened most recently in 2014. Aside from that year, Felipe Massa and Sebastian Vettel are the only other Ferrari drivers to have failed to reach Q3 here. Massa was eliminated in Q2 in both 2009 and 2013, while Vettel was out in Q2 at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.

The Red Bull junior team have scored in all of the last three Silverstone races. Pierre Gasly recorded the team’s best ever finishing position at the circuit last year with seventh place in the British Grand Prix. Before that, the former Toro Rosso team’s best finishing place was eighth, achieved by Daniel Ricciardo in 2013 and by Carlos Sainz in 2016. 2014 and 2016 are the only seasons where both Toro Rosso drivers have scored points at Silverstone, while 2012, 2019 and the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix are the only other races at the circuit which both drivers finished. The team have recorded double DNFs at the track in both 2007 and 2015.
There have been just eight occasions on which a Red Bull junior team driver has qualified in the top ten at Silverstone, with Daniel Ricciardo scoring the team’s best Silverstone qualifying result in 2013 with fifth on the grid. 2014 is the only season where both Toro Rosso drivers have reached the final part of qualifying, while both drivers were eliminated in Q1 in both 2009 and 2011. Brendon Hartley recorded the team’s first Q1 exit since 2011 in 2018 when he was unable to partake in qualifying due to a heavy crash in Free Practice 3. Daniil Kvyat was also eliminated in Q1 at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.
Alfa Romeo had a starring role in the first ever F1 race, which took place at Silverstone in 1950. Giuseppe Farina took pole position and won the event, with team-mate Luigi Fagioli finishing as runner-up, securing the first of four 1-2 finishes for Alfa Romeo in F1. With Reg Parnell finishing third for the team, it was an all-Alfa podium. Juan Manuel Fangio also scored a podium finish with Alfa Romeo at the circuit in 1951.
In the last three years the Alfa Romeo team, formerly known as Sauber, have recorded three DNFs, including a double DNF in 2018 – their first at the track since 1998. Kimi Raikkonen’s eighth place finish in 2019 meant that he picked up the team’s first points at Silverstone since 2013. Neither driver scored in either of last year’s races. Sauber have taken one podium finish at the British Grand Prix. That was in their BMW Sauber days, when Nick Heidfeld finished as runner-up in 2008. 2001, 2006 and 2007 are the only years where both of the team’s drivers have finished in the points at Silverstone.
Charles Leclerc’s ninth place in qualifying in 2018 is the only time in the last ten Silverstone races that either of the former Sauber team’s cars have reached Q3 at the British Grand Prix. The team recorded double Q1 exits in 2016, 2017 and at both of 2020’s Silverstone races. Their best qualifying result here is fifth on the grid, scored by both Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Haas have recorded six retirements in their six appearances at Silverstone. Kevin Magnussen scored the Haas team’s first and so far only points on British soil in 2018 with his ninth place finish. Haas’ 2019 British Grand Prix ended in a disappointing double DNF following a collision between their two drivers. 2017 is the only season in which both Haas drivers have reached the end of a race at Silverstone. In both of 2020’s races at the track, Romain Grosjean finished sixteenth while Magnussen retired.
With their ten entries, Haas have reached Q3 three times. While Romain Grosjean reached Q3 for Haas in 2017, 2018 marked the first time both Haas drivers reached the final part of qualifying at the circuit. Kevin Magnussen scored their best qualifying position at Silverstone to date with seventh on the grid in 2018. In 2019, Magnussen was eliminated in Q1 while Grosjean reached Q2. The team recorded their first double Q1 exit at the circuit in qualifying for the 2020 British Grand Prix.
Williams have taken eight victories at Silverstone and won all but one British Grand Prix between 1991 and 1997. While the team led the opening stages of the 2015 race, success at the track has been limited in recent seasons. Valtteri Bottas’ second place here in 2014 is the team’s only British Grand Prix podium finish in the last seventeen years. The team have scored only one point at the track in the last six Silverstone races, with Felipe Massa finishing tenth in the 2017 event. Williams have a good finish rate at the track, with Massa’s 2014 retirement being the only time one of their cars has failed to reach the end of a Silverstone race since 2006.
With eleven pole positions at Silverstone, Williams are tied with Ferrari as the most successful qualifiers at the track. The team have locked out the front row of the grid here five times. Williams have had less success in qualifying at the track in recent years, with Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa locking-out the second row in 2015 being a rare highlight. In 2019, the team recorded their third double-Q1 elimination at the track. It was somewhat of an improvement on their 2018 qualifying effort, where both Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin spun off the track and started from the pit-lane as a result of overnight changes to their cars. In 2020, George Russell reached Q2 at both the British Grand Prix and the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.
