2021 Styrian GP: A Statistic For Every Driver

Verstappen records the largest win margin in over five years, Norris loses positions for the first time in 2021 and Bottas enters the top ten in the all-time podium list. Here’s a statistic from each driver’s 2021 Styrian Grand Prix weekend!

🇬🇧 LEWIS HAMILTON

Already the driver with the most wins in Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton recorded his 43rd second place finish at the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix, equalling Michael Schumacher as the driver with the most second places. Hamilton’s wait for his 99th win continues. After failing to win at the Styrian Grand Prix, Hamilton is now on his longest losing streak since failing to win the six races between the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix and the 2018 Chinese Grand Prix. This was the first time that Hamilton finished as runner-up at two consecutive races since the 2017 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the 2018 Australian Grand Prix.

🇫🇮 VALTTERI BOTTAS

Valtteri Bottas recorded his 60th podium finish, equalling Nelson Piquet as the driver with the tenth most podium finishes in Formula 1 history. Bottas also overtakes David Coulthard as the driver to have taken the most top three finishes in Austria. Bottas recorded the first podium finish from fifth on the grid in Austria since Rubens Barrichello also finished third in 2003. The Finn equals Barrichello as the driver with the most third place finishes at the venue.

🇳🇱 MAX VERSTAPPEN

Max Verstappen became the first driver to record three pole positions in 2021, putting Red Bull on pole at their home race for the first time. On Sunday, he recorded the fourteenth win of his career and his third in Austria. Verstappen is only the second driver, after Alain Prost, to record three wins in the country. The 2021 Styrian Grand Prix was won by a margin of 35.743 seconds; the largest win margin at the Red Bull Ring since the circuit’s return to the calendar, and the largest win margin in Formula 1 since Nico Rosberg won the 2016 Chinese Grand Prix by 37.776 seconds.

🇲🇽 SERGIO PEREZ

Sergio Perez finished fourth in the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix, recording his best result at the Red Bull Ring. His previous best finish here was sixth; the position in which he finished both of 2020’s races at the venue.

🇦🇺 DANIEL RICCIARDO

Daniel Ricciardo finished the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix in thirteenth place, failing to score at the Red Bull Ring for the fourth time in the last five races at the circuit.

🇬🇧 LANDO NORRIS

Lando Norris started in the top three on the grid for the second time in his career, having previously done so at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix. Having started third, Norris finished in fifth place. It marked the first time that Norris has lost positions from where he started in 2021. This was Norris’ fourth consecutive top five finish. The Spanish Grand Prix remains the only race this year in which Norris has not finished in the top five.

🇩🇪 SEBASTIAN VETTEL

Sebastian Vettel qualified in fourteenth place, recording his worst qualifying result at the Red Bull Ring to date. His previous worst was thirteenth with Red Bull in 2014. It is only the third time he has failed to reach Q3 here. He went on to finish the race outside of the points.

🇨🇦 LANCE STROLL

Lance Stroll reached Q3 for the third time in the 2021 season. On all three occasions that he has reached Q3 this year, Stroll has qualified in tenth place. This was the first time that Stroll has out-qualified his team-mate since the Spanish Grand Prix.

🇪🇸 FERNANDO ALONSO

Fernando Alonso equalled his best qualifying result of 2021. The Styrian Grand Prix is the third race in a row at which Alonso has qualified in ninth place. This was only the second time that Alonso has qualified in the top ten in Austria. He qualified fourth with Ferrari at the 2014 Austrian Grand Prix.

🇫🇷 ESTEBAN OCON

Esteban Ocon qualified in seventeenth position, recording the Enstone team’s first Q1 exit at the Red Bull Ring since Jolyon Palmer qualified sixteenth for Renault in 2017. Ocon recorded Alpine’s third Q1 exit of the season. It was his second Q1 elimination of the season and the first time that he has failed to reach Q2 at this circuit.

🇲🇨 CHARLES LECLERC

Charles Leclerc was voted Driver of the Day after a comeback drive to seventh place. This was the first time that Leclerc has finished a race in Austria in a position behind his team-mate.

🇪🇸 CARLOS SAINZ

After recording Ferrari’s second Q2 exit of the 2021 season, Carlos Sainz finished the Styrian Grand Prix in sixth place, marking his fourth consecutive points-scoring appearance in Austria. It’s the equal-longest points scoring streak at the track, joint with Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas and Lando Norris

🇫🇷 PIERRE GASLY

Pierre Gasly recorded his team’s best-ever Austrian qualifying result with sixth on the grid, but was out on the first lap following contact with Charles Leclerc. His retirement brought an end to his six-race points-scoring streak; the equal longest streak of his career. Gasly’s retirement from sixth on the grid means that fourth is now the only grid slot to score at every Grand Prix in 2021. The Frenchman was the first driver to retire from sixth on the grid at the Red Bull Ring since Kimi Raikkonen in 2002.

🇯🇵 YUKI TSUNODA

With eighth place, Yuki Tsunoda equalled the best qualifying result of his career to date. He also qualified eighth at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He started eleventh, however, after a three-place grid penalty for impeding Valtteri Bottas. He went on to finish the race in tenth place, scoring for the third time in his career.

🇫🇮 KIMI RAIKKONEN

On the day that he set a new record as the driver to have started the most races with a single car number, and a new record for the driver with the most starts in Austria, Kimi Raikkonen saw the chequered flag in Austria for a ninth time, equalling John Watson’s record as the driver with the most finishes in the country. Raikkonen gained seven places from his grid slot to finish the race in eleventh. It’s the most positions he has gained in a race at the circuit.

🇮🇹 ANTONIO GIOVINAZZI

Antonio Giovinazzi reached Q2 at the Styrian Grand Prix, managing to do what neither Alfa Romeo driver did at either of last year’s Red Bull Ring races. The Italian failed to make any progress in the race, finishing where he started at this circuit for the first time.

🇩🇪 MICK SCHUMACHER

Mick Schumacher qualified in sixteenth place for the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix. It was the worst qualifying result in Austria for a Schumacher since Ralf Schumacher qualified nineteenth with Williams in 2000.

🇷🇺 NIKITA MAZEPIN

After setting the slowest qualifying time for the fourth time this year, Nikita Mazepin finished the race in eighteenth place. It’s the first eighteenth place finish in his career and the first eighteenth place finish for a Russian driver since Sergey Sirotkin finished eighteenth at the 2018 Russian Grand Prix.

🇬🇧 GEORGE RUSSELL

George Russell missed out on reaching Q3 by just eight thousandths of a second. Russell equalled his best qualifying result with Williams. He also qualified eleventh at this year’s Portuguese Grand Prix. After running as high as eighth in the opening stages of the race, Russell was the second driver to retire from the Styrian Grand Prix. He recorded his third retirement of the 2021 season. It’s the second time that Russell has retired at the Red Bull Ring. Russell became the first driver to retire having started tenth on the grid in 2021; though this was the fifth time in the last six races at the Red Bull Ring that the driver starting tenth has retired from the race.

🇨🇦 NICHOLAS LATIFI

Nicholas Latifi qualified in sixteenth place for a third consecutive race. It was the third time he has qualified sixteenth in his career, and, in the race, he finished in seventeenth place for the third time in his career.
