Antonio Giovinazzi’s 2020 F1 Season In Statistics

Antonio Giovinazzi proved to be more of a match for his team-mate in his second full year in Formula 1. Here are the facts and statistics from Giovinazzi’s 2020 F1 season!

Both Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkkonen scored four points for Alfa Romeo in 2021, though Giovinazzi scored on more occasions. He took ninth place in the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix before finishing tenth at the Eifel and Emilia Romagna Grands Prix. More often than not, Giovinazzi was able to make up positions in races – especially on the opening lap. He completed eleven of this year’s seventeen races in a better position than where he qualified.

Giovinazzi proved to be more of a match for experienced team-mate Raikkonen this year, with the Italian winning the qualifying battle. Giovinazzi was regularly ahead by small margins. He set faster times than Raikkonen in 27 of the 51 qualifying sectors in 2020, and on average was faster by just 0.013 seconds – the closest average gap between team-mates on this year’s grid.

Despite strong performances from Ferrari Academy drivers in Formula 2, Giovinazzi will remain with Alfa Romeo in 2021. Will he be able to beat his team-mate more consistently next season?

A STATISTIC FROM EVERY GRAND PRIX

Austria: For a second consecutive year, Antonio Giovinazzi scored points at the Austrian Grand Prix. Giovinazzi’s ninth place finish marked the best result for an Italian driver at the Austrian Grand Prix since Jarno Trulli finished eighth in 2003. Giovinazzi scored from eighteenth on the grid, making this the fourth time in the last six years that the driver starting eighteenth has scored at the Red Bull Ring.

Styria: For the fourth time in the last seven races, Antonio Giovinazzi finished in fourteenth at the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix. Fifteenth is the only other position in which he has finished as many as four times during his Formula 1 career.

Hungary: With Antonio Giovinazzi qualifying in nineteenth and Kimi Raikkonen qualifying in twentieth, 2020 is the first time that both of Alfa Romeo (formerly Sauber)’s drivers have been eliminated in Q1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix since Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica were both out in Q1 in 2009. In the race, Giovinazzi finished seventeenth – one position better than where he finished on his first appearance at the track last year.

Britain: Antonio Giovinazzi finished fourteenth for the fifth time in nine races. The 2020 British Grand Prix was the first time that the Italian has finished a Formula 1 race at Silverstone, having retired from the 2019 event.

70th Anniversary: For the second time in his career – and the second time in the last three races – Antonio Giovinazzi finished in seventeenth place. He has now had as many seventeenth places in his career as fellow 2020 drivers Carlos Sainz, Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel.

Spain: Qualifying in last place for the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix, Antonio Giovinazzi made 2020 the seventh consecutive year in which an Alfa Romeo (formerly Sauber) driver has been eliminated in Q1 at the Spanish Grand Prix. This is the lowest qualifying position of Giovinazzi’s career and the first time that he has been slowest of all the drivers. It was the fourth time in the last five races that the Italian has qualified on the back row of the grid.

Belgium: Antonio Giovinazzi retired from the Belgian Grand Prix for a second consecutive year. This was the Italian driver’s first retirement since he crashed out of last year’s Spa race. He made 2020 the fifth consecutive year in which an Alfa Romeo/Sauber driver retired from the Belgian Grand Prix.

Italy: At the 2019 Italian Grand Prix, Antonio Giovinazzi recorded the first points for an Italian driver on home soil since 2006. There was no such luck in 2020, as Giovinazzi served a stop/go penalty which dropped him to the back of the order. He finished sixteenth – the worst result for an Italian at Monza since Jarno Trulli finished nineteenth for Lotus in 2011.

Tuscany: With seventeenth place in qualifying, Antonio Giovinazzi recorded his best Saturday result of the season to date at the Tuscan Grand Prix. He had less luck on Sunday, where he recorded his second retirement in the space of three races.

Russia: After equalling his best qualifying result of the 2020 season with seventeenth place, Antonio Giovinazzi finished the Russian Grand Prix just one position outside of the points in eleventh. It was the best result that he has recorded at the Russian Grand Prix, and his best result since finishing ninth at the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix.

Eifel: Finishing in tenth place, Antonio Giovinazzi scored his point since the opening race of the season. The last race in which the Italian finished tenth was the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix.

Portugal: Antonio Giovinazzi qualified seventeenth for the third time in the last four races. With his eleventh Q1 exit of 2020 at the Portuguese Grand Prix, he equalled Nicholas Latifi as the driver to have recorded the most Q1 exits so far this season.

Emilia Romagna: On the weekend where he became the first driver to race at home three times in a single season since Eddie Cheever in 1982, Antonio Giovinazzi gained ten places from where he started, which is the most positions he has gained in any race during his F1 career. Giovinazzi became the second driver to score from last on the grid in the last three races. Nico Hulkenberg also scored having started last at the Eifel Grand Prix.

Turkey: Antonio Giovinazzi reached Q3 at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, making his first top ten appearance on a Saturday since the 2019 Austrian Grand Prix. Giovinazzi was the first retirement from the race, making this the first race from which he has been the first retiree. He’s also the first driver to record a retirement having started tenth on the grid at the Turkish Grand Prix.

Bahrain: Along with team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, Antonio Giovinazzi was out in Q1 at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Giovinazzi finished the race where he started, in sixteenth place. The only other time the Italian finished where he has started in 2020 was at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where he also finished sixteenth.

Sakhir: Antonio Giovinazzi reached Q2 for the third time in 2020. It was the third time he had done so in the last six races. Qualifying in fourteenth, the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix was the first time that Giovinazzi has not qualified sixteenth in Bahrain.

Abu Dhabi: For a second year in a row, Antonio Giovinazzi finished the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in sixteenth position. This was the seventh time that Giovinazzi has finished sixteenth in a Grand Prix. He became the eighth driver to have recorded seven or more sixteenth place finishes in Formula 1.
