Hamilton records Mercedes first Nurburgring win since 1954, Bottas is the first polesitter to retire in almost two years and Ricciardo reaches 30 podium finishes. Here’s a statistic from each driver’s 2020 Eifel Grand Prix weekend!
?? Lewis Hamilton
With victory at the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 Formula 1 victories. Hamilton became the tenth different driver to have held the record in F1’s 70 year history. His victory was the first for Mercedes at the Nurburgring since Juan Manuel Fangio’s victory at the 1954 German Grand Prix.
?? Valtteri Bottas
Valtteri Bottas recorded the fourteenth pole position of his career at the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix. It was his third pole position of the 2020 season – his first since the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. Bottas became the 25th different driver to have taken pole position at the Nurburgring. He was less lucky on Sunday. Bottas was the second retirement from the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix. It was his first retirement since the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix and Mercedes’ first non finish of the season. It was the first time that the polesitter has retired since Daniel Ricciardo did so at the 2018 Mexican Grand Prix.
?? Sebastian Vettel
Sebastian Vettel became the first Ferrari driver to finish an F1 race at the Nurburgring in a position outside of the points since Eddie Irvine finished seventh in the 1999 European Grand Prix. He’s also the first Ferrari driver to finish a Nurburgring race in a position outside of the top ten since Arturo Merzario finished twelfth in 1972.
?? Charles Leclerc
After equalling his best qualifying result of the 2020 season, Charles Leclerc finished seventh in the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix. The last time that no Ferrari drivers finished in the top six at the Nurburgring was in 1999, when Eddie Irvine finished seventh and Mika Salo retired.
?? Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen finished as runner-up in the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, recording the 39th podium finish of his career. He also became the 39th different driver to have set the Fastest Lap of a race on nine occasions, equalling the career tallies of Denny Hulme, Ronnie Peterson and Jacques Villeneuve. Verstappen has finished on the podium in every race which he has finished since the 2019 United States Grand Prix. With his Fastest Lap, Verstappen broke Michael Schumacher’s sixteen-year old Nurburgring Lap Record by 1.329 seconds.
?? Alex Albon
Alex Albon recorded his first DNF since the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix. It was Red Bull’s first retirement at the Nurburgring since both cars failed to finish the 2006 European Grand Prix.
?? Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz finished in fifth place in the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, recording his second top five finish in the last five races. The Italian and Eifel Grands Prix are the only two of those five races in which Sainz has completed more than five laps of the race.
?? Lando Norris
Lando Norris’ retirement from the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix made this the fourth time in the last five races that a McLaren driver has failed to reach the chequered flag.
?? Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo recorded the 30th podium finish of his career at the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, and his first podium finish since the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix. He’s the 35th different driver to have recorded thirty podium finishes, equalling Juan Pablo Montoya’s tally of career podiums. Ricciardo is the first Renault driver to finish on the podium since Nick Heidfeld at the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix. It’s the Enstone team’s first podium since Romain Grosjean finished third at the 2015 Belgian Grand Prix.
?? Esteban Ocon
Esteban Ocon retired from the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, recording his second retirement in the last three races. It’s only the second time in his career that he has retired twice in the space of three races. The last time he did so was when he recorded successive retirements in the 2018 Azerbaijan and Spanish Grands Prix.
?? Sergio Perez
At the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, Sergio Perez finished in fourth place for a second consecutive race. Having finished fifth at the Tuscan Grand Prix, the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix marks the first time in his career that he has finished in the top five at three consecutive races. With fourth place, Perez equalled Jordan’s best result at the track, recorded by Rubens Barrichello in 1995.
?? Lance Stroll
Due to illness, Lance Stroll did not take part in the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix. This was the first race in which Stroll did not compete since the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, ending a streak of 72 consecutive appearances.
?? Nico Hulkenberg
Due to Lance Stroll being unwell, Nico Hulkenberg’s services were called upon once again for the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix. For the first time since the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Hulkenberg partnered Sergio Perez at the Silverstone-based team, making it their 60th race together at the team. With minimal preparation, Hulkenberg set the slowest time in Q1 and qualified in twentieth place. It was his worst qualifying result since failing to set a time and qualifying 24th at the 2012 Italian Grand Prix. Having started twentieth, Hulkenberg made up twelve positions in the race to finish eighth. It’s the most positions gained in a race by any driver so far this season.
?? Daniil Kvyat
Though Daniil Kvyat is yet to reach Q3 this season, his thirteenth place in qualifying for the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix marked the first time since the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix that the Russian has failed to qualify in the top twelve.
?? Pierre Gasly
Finishing the Eifel Grand Prix in sixth place, Pierre Gasly recorded the Red Bull junior team’s first ever points at the Nurburgring. The team’s previous best result here was eleventh, recorded by Scott Speed in 2006. If you include the team’s history as Minardi, Gasly also equalled their best result here; Marc Gene finished sixth for the team in the 1999 European Grand Prix.
?? Kimi Raikkonen
Kimi Raikkonen made his 323rd Grand Prix start at the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, setting a new record for most starts by a driver in Formula 1 history.
?? Antonio Giovinazzi
Finishing in tenth place, Antonio Giovinazzi scored his point since the opening race of the season. The last race in which the Italian finished tenth was the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix.
?? Romain Grosjean
With ninth place in the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, Romain Grosjean scored his first points of the 2020 season. It was the first time that the Frenchman has scored since F1’s last visit to Germany at the 2019 German Grand Prix. Grosjean became the first driver to score at the Nurburgring having started sixteenth on the grid since Gunnar Nilsson finished fifth in the 1976 German Grand Prix.
?? Kevin Magnussen
Kevin Magnussen failed to score at the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix. It’s the eight consecutive race in which he has not scored – the second longest streak in his career. The only longer period in which Magnussen has failed to score was in the ten races between the 2016 Spanish and Italian Grands Prix.
?? George Russell
George Russell out-qualified his team-mate for a 32nd race in a row at the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix. On Sunday, he became the first retirement of the race.
?? Nicholas Latifi
Nicholas Latifi finished fourteenth in the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, which is the second best result of his career so far. He also equalled his second best qualifying result on Saturday with eighteenth place on the grid.
