Your 2019 #SpanishGP Predictions: The Results

Before the 2019 Spanish Grand Prix weekend began, I posted five prediction polls on the Lights Out twitter account. How many of the questions did you get right? Find out below!

1. WILL MERCEDES FINISH 1-2?

YOUR PREDICTION: NO

CORRECT ANSWER: YES

53% of you were hopeful that Mercedes’ domination would come to an end at the Spanish Grand Prix, but it was clear after qualifying that any team would have a fight on their hands to beat them to the top two spots on the podium. In the end, Mercedes recorded their 49th 1-2 finish – their fifth consecutive such finish in 2019. The team have taken five consecutive 1-2 finishes only twice before in F1 – no team has ever taken six in a row. Will that change in Monaco?

2. WILL HULKENBERG QUALIFY IN THE TOP 10?

YOUR PREDICTION: NO

CORRECT ANSWER: NO

It was Nico Hulkenberg’s ninth visit to the Catalunya circuit and for the ninth time, he failed to qualify in the top ten. The German was eliminated in Q1 for the third time at the Spanish Grand Prix, and for the second consecutive year. Team-mate Daniel Ricciardo out-paced Hulkenberg by just 0.019 seconds in the session, which was enough to see Ricciardo through to Q2 and eventually go on to qualify in the top ten. Hulkenberg’s Q1 running was interrupted by a visit through the gravel, in which he collided with a barrier and required a change of front wing as a result.

3. WILL SAINZ SCORE?

YOUR PREDICTION: YES

CORRECT ANSWER: YES

As 79% of you predicted, Carlos Sainz maintained his 100% points scoring record at the Spanish Grand Prix. The Spaniard finished eighth in front of his home crowd, which is actually his lowest finishing position at the Catalunya track since he finished ninth in his debut season. As a result of his points, McLaren remain fourth in the Constructors’ Championship

4. WHICH MIDFIELD TEAM WILL SCORE MORE POINTS?

YOUR PREDICTION: McLAREN

CORRECT ANSWER: HAAS

A huge 67% of you predicted McLaren would score the most points from these four teams, but Haas out-scored them by three points. Both Renault and Alfa Romeo failed to score at the Spanish Grand Prix, while Carlos Sainz gave McLaren four points with his eighth place finish. Both Haas drivers scored, with Kevin Magnussen taking six points after finishing seventh and Romain Grosjean scoring his first point of the year in tenth. Haas move up to sixth in the standings as a result.

5. WHICH TEAM WILL SET THE FASTEST LAP?

YOUR PREDICTION: FERRARI

CORRECT ANSWER: MERCEDES

Lewis Hamilton claimed the fastest lap for the first time in 2019. He scores 26 points at a Grand Prix for the first time in his career. The Spanish Grand Prix becomes the second race of the year at which Mercedes have set the fastest lap, with Valtteri Bottas also taking the honour at the Australian Grand Prix.
