2019’s Tallest F1 Team Is…

It’s the analysis you’ve all been waiting for. Which team has the tallest driver line-up in 2019? Who is the tallest driver, who is the shortest, and what is the combined height of this year’s grid? We have all the answers!

Update: driver height stats for 2020 can be found here.

If the drivers on the 2019 grid all stood on each other’s heads in an impressive acrobatic circus act, their total height would be 35.73 metres. That’s double the size of Abraham Lincoln’s face on Mount Rushmore.

At 186cm, Alexander Albon is the tallest driver on the 2019 Formula 1 grid, while Lando Norris is the shortest driver this year at 170cm. Overall, the 2019 grid is 8cm taller than last year’s grid. Gangly Frenchman Esteban Ocon may have departed, but he’s been replaced by four drivers (Albon, Giovinazzi, Russell and Kubica) of a similar height.

The combined height of 2019’s F1 drivers is:

  • about the same height as the Seymour Building in Vancouver
  • about the same height as the Camlin Hotel in Washington
  • about seven-tenths as tall as Nelson’s Column
  • about two-thirds as tall as The Leaning Tower of Pisa
  • about half as long as the wingspan of a 747
  • about two-and-a-half times as tall as The Hollywood Sign

Mercedes and McLaren are tied as the teams with the shortest driver line-ups this year, with Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas being the same combined height as Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris at 347cm. Sainz and Norris measure 1cm less combined than the 2018 McLaren line-up. Sainz is the same height as Stoffel Vandoorne, while Norris is a single centimetre shorter than Fernando Alonso.

Meanwhile, Williams have the tallest driver line-up in 2019, with Robert Kubica and George Russell equalling a height of 369cm. It’s the second consecutive year in which the team have had the tallest line-up, with last year’s pairing of Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin being 3cm shorter in total than their 2019 counterparts. Ferrari have gained the most height this year, with Charles Leclerc 4cm taller than Kimi Raikkonen, while Force India have lost the most – the still-lanky Lance being 4cm shorter than Ocon.

Hans-Joachim Stuck is believed to be the tallest ever F1 driver at 194cm, while Andrea Montermini is thought to be the shortest of the modern era at just 5 foot, 2 inches (around 157cm).

  1. I Never Knew That Alexander Albon Is The Tallest F1 Driver Insted I Thought That He Was The Shortest F1 Driver. And Valtteri Bottas I Thought I Knew That He Was Taller Than Lewis Hamilton But He Isn’t.
